The nature of a keynote address is to reflect upon issues of concern to the gathered assembly—to kickstart and enrich debates and to stimulate new ideas and perspectives. This address, presented at the beginning of the 44th World Conference of the International Council of Traditional Music, held in Limerick, Ireland, 12–14 July 2017, is very much grounded in my own experiences across a number of domains. I offer it as a subjective view of the potential of music and dance to act as powerful forces of cultural mediation, redressing social—and musical—inequalities.

Einem Kolloquium über <Ethnomusicology in the context of other sciences> während der 32. Weltkonferenz des International Council for Traditional Music 1993 in Berlin folgend, werden Abgrenzungen und Kontakte zu Nachbarfächern der Ethnomusikologie aus europäischer Sicht behandelt. Dafür wird zunächst das Eigene der auf Europa ausgerichteten Musikwissenschaft herausgestellt, anschließend die Auseinandersetzung mit fremder Musik seit dem 18. Jh. skizziert und der gegenwärtige Aufgabenbereich des Fachs umschrieben. Als angrenzende Wissenschaften erweisen sich dabei die Volksliedforschung, Ethnologie und Soziologie, Akustik und Kommunikationswissenschaften, Geschichte und Archäologie, Religions- und Sprachwissenschaften, sodann Fächer wie Assyriologie, Ägyptologie, Indologie, Sinologie, Afrikanologie u.a. Die Perspektive ändert sich, wenn Musikforschung nicht von einem Standort in Europa, sondern in einem anderen Land der Erde vorgenommen wird. Was immer die Musikgelehrten überall auf der Erde aus ihrem Blickpunkt zur Sprache bringen, sollte in einer kulturübergreifenden Musikforschung zusammengefaßt werden. (Kuckertz, Josef)

The notion of transforming the discipline, as suggested by the books’ title, is directly linked to the first joint scholarly meeting of the International Council for Traditional Music and Society for Ethnomusicology that took place as late as 2015, more than six decades after their foundations. This chapter offers historical, comparative, and personal insights into the two major scholarly associations in the field, creating a basis for an informed comprehension of ethnomusicological praxis discussed in other chapters. Distinctive and, in the beginning, hardly compatible intellectual histories of ICTM and SEM offer a key to understanding different attitudes toward activism and community engagement in both spatial and temporal terms. The chapter pays attention to the increasing interconnectedness, as well, and to the importance of shared members for cross-fertilization of ideas.
