Theology at the Free University of Amsterdam: the foundation in 1880 and its relation to the churches. In this second part of the description of the Dutch system of protestant theology the background of the foundation of the Vrije Universiteit at Amsterdam has been described. The foundation of the VU was a reaction on the "duplex ordo" at the state universities. All disciplines of theology have been understood to be fully theological (and not some neutral, some confessional). The views of Abraham Kuyper concerning the relation between the theological faculty and the refonned churches are discussed, and shortly also his conception of theology.

In the article "Unity of the system of state universities in today’s Russia", published in August 2020, it was proved that the constitutional right to education implies the need to support not only the leading universities of the country with the help of "academic leadership" programs, but all universities established by the state. Firstly, the creation of a university by the state presupposes responsibility on the part of the state as the founder for ensuring the conditions of its activity; secondly, students of all state universities equally have the right to demand from the state the creation of conditions for obtaining high-quality and modern education. In the development of the concept of unity of the higher education system, this article discusses specific practical steps to implement the approaches indicated in the article in terms of the use of public resources. The authors formulated a number of proposals regarding the state policy in the field of science and higher education in relation to the distribution of financial resources and other resources between institutions of higher education, and also proposed specific measures for their implementation, described by examples from practice.

The sectioning or grouping of students taking required college mathematics courses is now a relatively common procedure. O’Quinn1 reports that twenty-seven state universities, out of forty-three replying to his questionaire, used some method for grouping students according to mathematical ability or previous training in mathematics. The criteria used for grouping or sectioning students in mathematics courses were almost as varied as the number of universities which replied that they sectioned their students. In some universities all the students take the same course regardless of the group to which they were assigned, while in others those with the poorer preparation and/or ability were placed in special courses. In general, those universities which favored grouping were also strongly in favor of making adjustments in the amount of material, and type of subject matter to be taught in the different sections. From the O’Quinn report it is evident that there is a rather definite trend in the state universities toward the grouping of students according to ability and/or training.
