The Inner Exile. Life and Literature of Carmen LaforetCarmen Laforet lives in the history of Spanish literature as the author of an extraordinary novel recognised with the Nadal Award Nada, 1944 who subsequently lapsed into a mysterious silence. Despite having published several works, including some noteworthy novels La isla de los demonios, 1952; La mujer nueva, 1955, La insolación, 1963, Laforet gradually abandoned the literary scene and her own writing, secluding herself into her inner world, a kind of self-exile driven by the need for privacy and independence, as well as her maladjustment and lack of rooting. The article seeks to delve into the imperatives and inhibitions which instigated that silence, identifiable both in her literary work and in the confessions to her relatives and letters she exchanged, among others, with the exiled Ramón J. Sender, with whom she maintained correspondence and a friendly relationship for many years Puedo contar contigo. Correspondencia, 2003.

En 1965 la novelista española Carmen Laforet es invitada a realizar un viaje a los Estados Unidos. Es la primera vez que la escritora toma contacto con la realidad de ese país americano, ejemplo del poder económico, social y cultural frente a la España de posguerra, pobre y sin libertades bajo la dictadura del general Franco. Las crónicas de ese viaje especial las reúne en Paralelo 35. Estas crónicas están basadas en el testimonio de los estadounidenses. Sin embargo, Carmen Laforet también expone su opinión personal, sobre todo cuando describe los grandes espectáculos —la desbordante naturaleza o los conciertos de jazz— o cuando indaga en el conflicto racial, que en esos momentos se encuentra en una situación muy tensa.

En Nada de Carmen Laforet la búsqueda de la asersión de la subjetividad viene originada por una carencia. El tema de la ausencia del personaje de la madre es una idea central en esta novela. La añoranza de lo materno en las circunstancias históricas y sociales de la época de la posguerra española repercute en la caracterización del personaje central. Siguiendo las diferentes teorías que se han desarrollado en torno a la maternidad, mi ensayo estudia la importancia esencial de la figura de la madre desde las etapas más tempranas de crecimiento del individuo y en la formación de su subjetividad. In Carmen Laforet’s Nada the search for the assertion of the subjectivity is originated by a emptiness. The theme of the absence of the mother figure is a central idea in this novel. The pinning for the maternal in the social and economic circumstances of the Spanish postwar period has a repercussion on the image of the main character. Following different theories about maternity, my essay studies the essential importance of the mother figure from the earliest stages of the individual’s development and in the formation of his/her subjectivity.

La novela de Carmen Laforet Nada es uno de los grandes ejemplos del tremendismo español del siglo XX la cual retrata las duras y sombrías realidades de la guerra civil y la postguerra. No obstante, quienes han analizado esta obra han dejado pasar el uso de la animalización como un recurso utilizado en esta obra para poner en primer plano el contexto degradante y bestial de la sociedad española de la posguerra. Esta investigación ve a la animalización como una técnica literaria que concede atributos de animales a los seres humanos con el fin de hacer hincapié en que tanto el hombre y los animales viven en un mundo deshumanizante donde la supervivencia es el principal objetivo. Mientras que es un aspecto muy integral de la tradición literaria, la técnica de la animalización ha eludido la investigación académica en numerosos niveles. En este ensayo se teorizan las expresiones literarias de formas animales y sus conexiones con personajes humanos con el fin de ilustrar que este mundo dominado por instintos animales y la falta de facultades humanas es precisamente el producto de su propio contexto social e histórico degradante. Carmen Laforet’s novel Nada is one of the leading examples of the 20th century Spanish literary movement tremendismo that portrays the harsh, grim realities of civil war and its aftermath. Scholars have failed to recognize, however, the novel’s use of animalization as a technique that brings to the forefront the degrading and bestial context of postwar Spanish society. This research conceives animalization as the literary device that grants animal attributes to humans in order to emphasize that both man and animal inhabit a dehumanizing world where the main objective is survival. While a highly integral aspect of literary tradition, the technique of animalization has evaded scholarly inquiry on numerous levels. This essay theorizes the literary expressions of animal forms and their connections with human characters in order to illustrate that this animalized world dominated by instincts and the lack of human faculties is precisely the product of its very own degrading social and historic context.
