This article gives an account of the joint implementation by the sponsor, the host institution and the partner institution of a master’s programme in Information and Communication Technology for Education at a leading African university in 2005. The success of the programme was such that it became a flagship programme at the institution. In the context of many failed joint implementations of such programmes, the question that arose and that prompted the writing of this article was, “Why did this programme succeed?” The literature indicates two elements that contribute to successful implementations: the individuals responsible for the course, and the support the institution gives. Interviews with the course coordinator, university administrators, alumni and current students, and an analysis of course documents and students’ research output revealed the nature of the activities of certain individuals and also of the institutional support factors that led to the success of the programme. Based on the study conducted, this article provides some suggestions that other implementers of similar projects may find useful.

Many people believe that chemical imbalances cause mental illnesses, despite the absence of evidence to ascertain this. This study describes the reasoning that people use in their own case to justify this belief. Data come from recorded medication histories with 22 adults aged 23–68 years, taking different psychiatric drugs for various problems and varying durations, asked directly if they thought their problem was caused by a chemical imbalance and to explain their answer. About two-thirds expressed belief that they had a chemical imbalance; and the rest that they did not have one, did not or could not know, or that their medication had caused one. Reasoning backward from positive drug experiences (ex juvantibus or post hoc) and appeals to authority and convention characterized most answers expressing belief in an imbalance. Experiencing improvement while taking drugs and acquiescing in mental health practitioners’ views instills or reinforces people’s belief that they are or were chemically imbalanced, which suggests viewing the belief as a drug effect. The chemical imbalance notion is likely to persist, as its appeal to give personal meaning to symptom relief and its unfalsifiability ensure institutional support that neutralizes the absence of scientific support.

<p class="3">This note from the field reviews the sustainability of an institution-wide program for adopting and adapting open and alternative educational resources (OAER) at Kansas State University (K-State). Developed in consult of open textbook initiatives at other institutions and modified around the needs and expectations of K-State students and faculty, this initiative proposes a sustainable means of incentivizing faculty participation via institutional support, encouraging the creation and maintenance of OAER through recurring funding, promoting innovative realizations of “educational resources” beyond traditional textbooks, and rallying faculty participation in adopting increasingly open textbook alternatives. The history and resulting structure of the initiative raise certain recommendations for how public universities may sustainably offset student textbook costs while also empowering the pedagogies of educators via a more methodical approach to adopting open materials.</p>

This article examines the origin of the “Prancing Horse” symbol and its role in helping the racing team Ferrari survive under the fascist regime in Italy. Enzo Ferrari, the company’s founder, adopted the coat of arms of Francesco Baracca, the most renowned Italian military aviator during World War I, as the logo of his new racing team. By repurposing it from military aviation to motorsport, he benefitted from powerful cultural associations and strong political and cultural endorsement of Baracca’s persona. Drawing from scholarship on cultural branding and consumer culture, this study shows how new companies can establish powerful business icons by borrowing symbols connected to populist worlds and national ideologies, and transferring them to various industries. Strategic repurposing thus emerges as a distinct process within cultural branding to obtain institutional support and establish powerful brand identities in challenging contexts.
