THE New World of the sixteenth century grew directly out of the Old not merely in a physical but in an intellectual sense. The men of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, who found the new lands overseas, were educated in a humanistic tradition which made the classical past, especially the Roman past, alive and relevant to them. Consequently, there is an element of continuity in the thinking about the discoveries and the problems they presented on the basis of older intellectual concepts, which continues to influence much of the thought of the sixteenth century about cosmography, natural history and about the planting of colonies in lands unknown to the ancients. It is astonishing how Ptolemy remained the standard bearer of the new discoveries: maps of the New World and other novel areas, added to his Geography for the first time in 1513, continued to proliferate in edition after edition until by the later sixteenth century the original maps and text had been so overlaid with new matter that they bore even less relationship to the original than the first issue of Gray's Anatomy has to the current edition. It was much the same with Pliny: the Natural History remained the starting point for New World and Asiatic botany and zoology throughout the sixteenth century. Oviedo in 1526 paid his respects to the master before suggesting that genuine novelties could now be added to his text: well before the end of the century Pliny too had been swamped in new material, though his text was also retained intact.

The larva and pupa of Homophileurus tricuspis Prell (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Phileurini) are described for the first time based on specimens from Colombia. A key to the known third-stage larvae of New World Phileurini species is provided. Notes on the natural history and distribution of H. tricuspis in Colombia are also included.

Exceptionally well-preserved (silicified) hippuritid rudists occur in the El Rayo Formation (lower Maastrichtian) of south-western Puerto Rico. Three species belonging to three different genera are present: Caribbea muellerreidi (VERMUNT), Laluzia peruviana (GERTH) and Parastroma guitarti (PALMER). Acid digestion of the limestones has resulted in a collection with numerous three-dimensional left and right valves many with the preservation of the minute details of the pore system. The morphological features of each species are described, and many features are illustrated for the first time. The new material, coupled with descriptions from other studies, demonstrates that six genera of endemic hippuritids evolved in two separate radiations in the New World: an older radiation of forms that had pallial canals in their left valves (Barrettia, Whitfieldiella and Parastroma) and a younger radiation of forms lacking pallial canals in their left valves (Laluzia, Caribbea and Praebarrettia). The exquisite preservation also reveals that in these endemic New World hippuritids the sockets for the teeth consisted of slots into which ribs on the teeth fitted; this contrasts with Old World hippuritids that have true sockets formed from upfolds of the tabulae for the teeth. The distinctive morphology of the tooth sockets is here used to define a monophyletic subfamily for which the name Barrettiinae CHUBB is available.

AbstractFrom the endemic New World halyine genus Brochymena, two genera are recognized. New morphological characters at the generic level are described. Parabrochymena, new genus, with Pentatoma arborea Say as type species, is erected to contain 10 taxa formerly included in Brochymena. New combinations are Parabrochymena aculeata (Distant), P. apiculata (Van Duzee), P. arborea (Say), P. barberi barberi (Ruckes), P. barberi diluta (Blatchley), P. cuspidata (Distant), P. enigmatica (Ruckes), P. florida (Ruckes), P. haedula (Stål), and P. poeyi (Guérin-Méneville). Brochymena is redefined with 20 taxa: B. affinis Van Duzee, B. cariosa Stål, B. carolinensis (Westwood), B. chelonoides Ruckes, B. dilata Ruckes, B. exardentia Ruckes, B. hoppingi Van Duzee, B. humeralis Ruckes, B. laevigata Ruckes, B. lineata Ruckes, B. marginella Stål, B. myops Stål, B. parva Ruckes, B. punctata punctata Van Duzee, B. punctata pallida Blatchley, B. pilatei Van Duzee, B. quadripustulata (Fabricius), B. splendida Ruckes, B. sulcata Van Duzee, and B. tenebrosa Walker. Four synonymies are established: B. marginella Stål = B. carolinensis (Westwood); B. pilatei Van Duzee = B. sulcata Van Duzee; B. laevigata Ruckes = B. myops Stål; B. exardentia Ruckes = B. lineata Ruckes. Lectotypes are designated for B. affinis Van Duzee, B. cariosa Stål, B. myops Stål, B. punctata pallida Blatchley, and B. p. punctata Van Duzee. Species groups of Brochymena are characterized, and a key to all taxa is presented for the first time. As appropriate, for each species of Brochymena, the following are provided: citation of original description, synonymies, type material, diagnosis, description, geographical distribution, taxonomic comments, natural history, and illustrations of important structural characters. Chorological affinities are presented and systematic relationships are hypothesized.

At the southern foot of the Palatine Hill in Rome, a little more than one hundred metres due west of the triumphal arch erected by the emperor who is associated more than any other with the Christian conversion of the Old World — Constantine the Great – there stands another arch. Relocated from its original position at the eastern foot of the Palatine, more or less directly across from the biggest remaining ruin in the forum — that of the Basilica of Maxentius — it formed the monumental entrance to one of the most important botanic gardens in sixteenth-century Europe — the Orti farnesiani, which were given their definitive shape between 1565 and 1590. I propose that this second arch has reason to be considered as occupying a similar symbolic significance for the conversion of the New World.

AbstractThe Microgastrinae wasp Diolcogaster claritibia (Papp, 1959) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is recorded from the Nearctic region (Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario, Canada) for the first time. In spite of some minor morphological and molecular (DNA barcoding) differences, the available data indicate that the European and New World specimens should be considered one species, but more specimens and loci need to be sampled to conclusively determine the phylogeographic history of the species. Diolcogaster claritibia seems to be widely distributed within the Holarctic, and the molecular data suggest that it was recently introduced to North America from Europe.

In 1565, an English sailor named John Sparke visited the colonial Floridas for the first, and probably, only time. Sparke, along with thousands of other Europeans, was in the midst of exploring, settling, and exploiting the Western Hemisphere's eastern coastline, an endeavour that escalated in intensity following the spectacular voyages of Christopher Columbus almost eighty years before. Encountering a variety of locales, objects, and peoples for the first time, the mariner made observations that reveal a great deal about the meeting of Old and New World cultures. Referring to the indigenous inhabitants of the region, Sparke wrote, ‘those people of the cape of Florida are of more savage and fierce nature, and more valiant than any of the rest [he had met in the Americas]’. Significantly, the sailor based his opinions, at least in part, on tales of native barbarity communicated to him by Spanish settlers who had begun colonising the peninsula at the dawn of the sixteenth century. According to these stories, Indians were uncivilised and ‘eaters of the flesh of men […] canibals’. Yet, Sparke remained unsure about how to evaluate the indigenous inhabitants. His confusion stemmed from conflicting assessments supplied by French colonisers who had also recently established a foothold in the Floridas.

Nearctic genera of Euderinae (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are reviewed, and diagnostic characters of the subfamily are discussed. Six genera, Acrias, Allocerastichus, Astichus, Carlyleia, Euderus, and Hubbardiella, are recognized from the Nearctic region. Notes are provided on nomenclature, taxonomy, geographic distribution, and natural history for each genus. Six generic names are placed in synonymy: Moureisca De Santis, Urban, &Graf, Balinia Hedqvist, Durinia Hedqvist, and Oinia Hedqvist as junior synonyms of Acrias, and Cortesiella De Santis and Gimlia Hedqvist as junior synonyms of Allocerastichus. Two specific names are placed in synonymy: Astichus (Astichus) notus Yoshimoto as a junior synonym of A. (A.) polyporicola Hedqvist and Euderus (Euderus) viridilineatus Yoshimoto as a junior synonym of E. (E.) verticillatus (Ashmead). The genus Allocerastichus is recorded from the Nearctic region for the first time, based on A. bicarinatus sp.nov. (type locality: Louisa County, Virginia, U.S.A.) and A. tricarinatus sp.nov. (type locality: Jackson County, North Carolina, U.S.A.). The female of Carlyleia marilandica Girault is redescribed, and the male is described for the first time. Two subgenera of Euderus are recognized: Euderus s.str. and Euderus (Secodelloidea). The genus Parasecodella, represented in the New World by an undescribed Nearctic species, is probably synonymous with Euderus; it may constitute a third subgenus. Further examination of species of Parasecodella and Euderus s.l. should be done before such a classification is made. The difficulty of recognizing Hubbardiella as a euderine, based on the number of distinct metasomal tergites, is discussed.

AbstractFlint arrowheads, spearheads, and axe heads made by prehistoric Europeans were generally considered before the eighteenth century to be a naturally produced stone that formed in storm clouds and fell with lightning. These stones were called ceraunia, or thunderstones, and it was not until the sixteenth century that their status as a natural phenomenon was challenged. During the seventeenth century natural historians and antiquaries began to suggest that these ceraunia were not thunderstones but ancient human artifacts. I argue that natural history museums, European contact with the stone-tool using peoples in the New World, and the close relationship between natural history and antiquarianism were critical to this reinterpretation of ceraunia. Once these objects were recognized to be ancient artifacts they could be used to investigate the earliest periods of human history from sources other than texts.

This article examines the development of charitable activity in the city of Vilnius and elsewhere in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania before the middle of the sixteenth century by studying the foundation of almshouses to care for the poor and destitute and foster the memory and salvation of pious benefactors. Almshouse foundations developed from increasing forms of practical piety within the GDL from the late fifteenth century, following earlier west European and Polish models. The first, dedicated to traditional patrons of such institutions, St Job and St Mary Magdalene, was founded by a Vilnius canon and medical doctor, Martin of Duszniki with the support of the monarch, Sigismund the Old, and his counsellors between 1518 and 1522. The almshouse swiftly became an established part of the city’s sacral topography. The fashion was adopted by Eastern Orthodox parishes in Vilnius too, and later spread to other confessional groups. Twelve charters are published for the first time in an appendix.

This study aimed to raise and address nomenclatural issues surrounding Neotropical species in the genus Gnamptogenys, in addition to describing new species accumulated in myrmecological collections. New and reinstated names recognized here include G. pernambucana (Santschi) sp. rev., stat.n., G. lenis sp. n., G. latistriata sp. n., and G. avus sp. n. The queen and intercaste of G. lavra Lattke and the queen of G. pernambucana are described for the first time. For these five species we provide complete descriptions and diagnoses, comments on taxonomy and natural history, distribution data, and high-resolution images, including the first images of G. lavra. An updated identification key for all the Neotropical species of Gnamptogenys is also provided, including the new and revived species as well as G. aspera Morgan and G. pilosa Lattke, not present in previous keys for the genus.
