Serum myostatin, a proteic compound known to regulate skeletal muscle growth and production of extracellular matrix, is independently associated with increased aortic stiffness in healthy male adolescents. This result sheds lights on the potential novel role of myokines in the early development of systemic hypertension and early vascular aging, as well as on their inhibition as a hypothetical therapeutic strategy to counteract vascular aging at an early stage of physical development.

Introduction: Although tobacco product transitions have been characterized in the general population, few studies have examined use in individuals with established cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: We examined tobacco use prevalence, and longitudinal patterns of tobacco product transitions in adult respondents (≥18 years) of the 2013-2014 (Wave 1) through 2016-2018 (Wave 4) Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Analysis was restricted to adults with prevalent CVD. Prevalent CVD was defined based on self-report at Wave 1 to the question from a health professional if she/he had: 1) a heart attack, 2) heart failure, 3) a stroke, or 4) some other heart condition. Factors associated with tobacco use (cigarette, e-cigarette, cigar, pipe tobacco, hookah, smokeless, dissolvable, or snus) and tobacco product transitions were investigated using logistic regression. Results: At Wave 1, 28.8% reported tobacco use among adults with CVD, the most commonly product was cigarettes (82.8%), followed by use of any type of cigar (49%) and e-cigarette use (23.2%), including 5.4% reporting dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes. E-cigarette use without concurrent cigarette use was uncommon (1.1%). Young male with lower level of education and lack of knowledge about the association between smoking and heart disease, were associated with tobacco use. Transition rates reported between Waves 1 and 4 demonstrate decreased cigarette use over time, with increased use of e-cigarette but less dual use. Male with prevalent CVD were less likely to use e-cigarettes compared to female (OR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.4 - 0.8). Conclusions: Despite known harmful cardiovascular effects, almost a quarter of adults with prevalent CVD smoke cigarettes and few are quitting smoking.

Abstract Background As smoking rates decreased, the use of Swedish snus (smokeless tobacco) concordantly increased in Norway. The role of snus as possible contributor to the reduction of smoking has been widely discussed. Our aim was to quantitate transitions in snus use, smoking and dual use of snus and cigarettes in a young male population. Methods This prospective cohort study includes 1346 boys participating in the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study in Young-HUNT1 1995–97, age 13–19 and in HUNT3 2006–08, age 23–30. Participants reported on tobacco use at both points of time. Models with binominal regression were applied to examine relative risks (RRs), of adolescent ever snus users, dual users or smokers (reference: never tobacco use), to be current snus only users, smokers (including dual users), or tobacco free in adulthood. Results Current tobacco use in this male cohort increased from 27% in adolescence to 49% in adulthood, increasing more for snus only use and dual use than for smoking only. The adjusted RR (95% CI) of becoming a smoker as young adult, was 2.2 (CI 1.7–2.7) for adolescent snus users, 3.6 (CI 3.0–4.3) for adolescent dual users, and 2.7 (CI 2.2–3.3) for adolescent smokers. RR to become snus only users as adults was 3.1 (2.5–3.9) for adolescent dual users, 2.8 (2.2–3.4) for adolescent snus users and 1.5 (1.0–2.2) for adolescent smokers. The adjusted RR for the transition from adolescent tobacco use to no tobacco use in adulthood was similar for snus users and smokers with RR 0.5 (CI 0.4–0.7), but considerably lower for dual users with RR 0.2 (CI 0.2–0.3). Conclusions The use of snus, with or without concurrent smoking, carried a high risk of adult smoking as well as adult snus only use. Dual use seemed to promote the opportunity to become snus only users in adulthood, but made it also more difficult to quit. The benefit of snus use for harm reduction is not evident in our cohort, as the combination of smoking and dual use resulted in high smoking rates among the young adults.

Abstract Objectives To investigate the association between gender norms about romantic relationships and sexual experiences of very young male adolescents (VYMA) living in Korogocho slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Methods We used cross-sectional data from a sample of 426 VYMA living in Korogocho slum. We conducted an exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis to, respectively, explore and validate the factor structure underlying gender norms scale items. We used structural equation modelling to assess the association between gender norms and sexual experiences of VYMA. Results We found high endorsement of heteronormative beliefs about romantic relationships and low endorsement of sexual double standards. Sexual experience was associated with low endorsement of heteronormative beliefs, being pre-pubertal, school absenteeism and being below recommended grade for age. Sharing a sleeping room with more than two people, been born outside Nairobi, and living in households headed by older persons lowered the likelihood of sexual experience. Conclusions Our findings underscore the need for further research to understand how gender norms evolve as young boys transition through adolescence to adulthood and how these changes impact on sexual behaviors

This study aimed to consolidate the body height, body weight, BMI, and nutrition status data of the overall young male population from the Municipality of Berane in order to assess the trajectories of those variables from 1979 to 1987. The sample of respondents included 8,740 adolescents who were divided into nine groups according to their age. The sample of variables included body height, body weight, body mass index, and nutrition status, which were presented based on a long-established BMI categorization (underweight, normal weight, pre-obese, and obese). The descriptive statistics are expressed as the mean and standard deviation for each variable; the analysis of nutrition status was calculated based on BMI, while LSD post hoc testing with ANOVA was employed to investigate differences between the means. The results indicate that a secular trend is visible regarding body height and body weight, while no trend is visible for the BMI and nutrition status. This study’s contribution is that it provides insight into more recently published data for the studied period and in this municipality, which can significantly aid in following the secular trend throughout Montenegro.
