Abstract The three words-three shapes test is a brief bedside technique for assessment of learning and memory using verbal and non-verbal material. To the best of our knowledge, performance of Brazilian elderly on this test has not yet been reported. Objective: To evaluate the performance of normal Brazilian elderly on the three words-three shapes test. Method: A total of 50 adult patients, 25 males and 25 females, with age ranging from 55 to 81 years (66.0±7.10 years), 1 to 8 years of schooling, different economic conditions and living in the São José do Rio Preto municipality, State of São Paulo, were evaluated. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between performance of males and females. Performance on incidental recall was significantly lower than in delayed recall. The performance in the learning phase improved following at least two further presentations of the stimuli. Approximately 50% of the participants did not remember the six stimuli and had to proceed to the recognition stage. The performance in the recognition stage was significantly better than during spontaneous recall. Patients with low educational level (less years of schooling) had poorer performance on the recall of shapes and on the total score of the test. Conclusions: The three words-three shapes test is rapid, efficient and straightforward to apply in the elderly, but low educational level was associated with poorer performance on this test. Normal elderly individuals had greater difficulty in the encoding process and in searching for stored information.

The present study investigated the effect of three goal-setting groups (self-set, assigned, and control) and three levels of self-efficacy (low, medium, and high) on bowling performance of college students (N = 288). The performance/retention trials were analyzed in a 3 × 2 × 10 (Goal Conditions × Self-Efficacy Levels × Trials) ANCOVA design, with repeated measures on the last factor and baseline performance as the covariate. Results of the data analysis revealed a significant main effect for self-efficacy (SE) levels for males and females. Individuals at high and medium SE levels performed significantly better than those at a low SE level. The nonsignificant main effect for goal groups was attributed to the spontaneous goal-setting behavior of the control group. Finally, there was a main effect for trials and planned comparisons indicated that as trials progressed female students improved. Evidence of a performance plateau was present for male students, as they showed marginal improvement across trials.

The present study investigated the reading preferences of international students regarding their choices between electronic texts (e-texts) and printed texts (p-texts). The study also explored the influence of reading e-texts and p-texts on comprehending their contents, as well as the purpose of students using these electronic devices (e-devices). The data were collected using a questionnaire completed by non-native English speakers (36 males, 24 females) at a southwestern university in the United States. The findings indicated that the students preferred using p-texts over e-texts. Among these students, there was no gender difference in terms of reading preferences. Moreover, the results indicated a statistically significant difference between males and females regarding understanding the content in the printed format. The females understood the content better than the males when they read p-text. The findings also revealed that students preferred using electronic devices for personal uses rather than academic uses. Such personal uses were web browsing, listening to or watching media, and reading and writing emails. The study suggested several pedagogical implications for students and e-book developers and designers.

AbstractThe flight distance, flight time and individual flight activities of males and females of Dendroctonus armandi were recorded during 96-h flight trials using a flight mill system. The body weight, glucose, glycogen and lipid content of four treatments (naturally emerged, starved, phloem-fed and water-fed) were compared among pre-flight, post-flight and unflown controls. There was no significant difference between males and females in total flight distance and flight time in a given 24-h period. The flight distance and flight time of females showed a significant linear decline as the tethered flying continued, but the sustained flight ability of females was better than that of males. The females had higher glycogen and lipid content than the males; however, there was no significant difference between both sexes in glucose content. Water-feeding and phloem-feeding had significant effects on longevity, survival days and flight potential of D. armandi, which resulted in longer feeding days, poorer flight potential and lower energy substrate content. Our results demonstrate that flight distances in general do not differ between water-fed and starved individuals, whereas phloem-fed females and males fly better than water-fed and starved individuals.

AbstractBackground. It is well known that the NT-proBNP in obese subjects is much lower than in normal weight subjects, making difficult to interpret it. In current practice the patients are frequently obese. In these conditions, a new biomarker, not influenced by weight, could be useful in acute-decompensated heart failure (ADHF).Aim. To determine CA-125 changes in obese and normal weight patients with ADHF.Method. The study group included 110 patients (mean age 72±10 years, 63% men) with ADHF caused by ischemic cardiomyopathy. The subjects were clinically, ecocardiographically and biologically (NT-proBNP, CA-125) evaluated.Results. The mean BMI was 27.6±5.8 kg/m2 and 35 (33%) subjects were obese. CA-125 at admission was 53±33 U/mL and decreased at discharge to 34±17 U/mL, without any difference between males and females. There was a significant difference between NT-proBNP at admission in obese versus normoponderal patients (3207±1432 pg/mL versus 4457±2737 pg/mL (p=0.02)), which was maintained at discharge (1711±816 pg/mL versus 2674±1475 pg/mL (p=0.03)).In the same time, the CA-125 did not show statistically significant differences between obese and normoponderal subjects at admission (56±29 U/mL versus 51±20 U/mL (p=0.63)) and discharge (36±20 U/mL versus 33±16 U/mL (p=0.56)).Conclusions. CA-125 could be an useful biomarker in monitoring the obese patients with ADHF, better than NT-proBNP.

This study aims to explore gender, race, stress and sleep quality as factors which influence the academic performance of undergraduate students. The samples of study involved 80 students from the Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. Questionnaire used in the data collection comprising demographic information, stress questionnaire (Student Stress Inventory (SSI)) and sleep quality questionnaire (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)). The academic performance of the undergraduate students in this study was measured by their cumulative grade point average (CGPA). The result of the study showed that female students performed better than male students; whilst non-Bumiputera students performed better than Bumiputera students. The study also found that the higher the stress level of a student (SSI score), the lower his or her CGPA results. Moreover, the findings showed that there is a significant difference in FCSHD undergraduates’ academic performance based on their sleep quality, in which the mean of CGPA for students with good sleep quality is higher than that of students with bad sleep quality. Ultimately, the study reveals that gender and race do play a part in the academic performance of students and having good sleep quality and a little bit of stress is equally important in learning and helpful in attaining good grades and hence, should be leveraged by students.
