AbstractIn this paper we build a conceptual framework to argue for culturally compelling instruction that leads to teaching for change. Culturally compelling instruction calls for a substantive shift in how teachers view their students, communities, and what the perspective might mean for students’ future when they have access to alternative learning opportunities. The framework encourages teachers to take a stance and assume responsibility and ownership for their own decisions about the curriculum and instructional delivery. Most prominent is to acquire a depth of understanding of their students’ identities and needs. To represent our vision for culturally compelling instruction we use the lead poisoned water crisis in Flint, Michigan, USA as an illustrative case. Our work provides an example of how a real-world circumstance such as Flint’s may be integrated into content area subjects to frame a culturally compelling instructional practice.

The paper presents an experimental application of the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) to damage detection in steel beams. A damaged beam has been excited with a sinusoidal force, the acceleration response at points regularly spaced along the structure has been recorded and the relevant Proper Orthogonal Modes calculated. In this way it is possible to locate damage by comparing the measured dominant Proper Orthogonal Mode with a smoothed version of it which does not exhibit apparent peaks in correspondence with the damage. One of the principal advantages of the proposed damage detection technique is that it does not require vibration measurements to be performed on the undamaged structure. Moreover the ‘optimality’ of the proper orthogonal modes only requires the use of a few (one-two) of them which can be computed in real time during lab experiments or while the structure is functioning in the field.

The two-arm Clinical Decisions/Diagnostic Workshop (CD/DW) approach to undergraduate medical education has been successfully used in Brazil. Objective Present the CD/DW approach to the teaching of stroke, with the results of its pre-experimental application and of a comparative study with the traditional lecture-case discussion approach. Method Application of two questionnaires (opinion and Knowledge-Attitudes-Perceptions-KAP) to investigate the non-inferiority of the CD/DW approach. Results The method was well accepted by teachers and students alike, the main drawback being the necessarily long time for its completion by the students, a feature that may better cater for different educational needs. The comparative test showed the CD/DW approach to lead to slightly higher cognitive acquisition as opposed to the traditional method, clearly showing its non-inferiority status. Conclusion The CD/DW approach seems to be another option for teaching neurology in undergraduate medical education, with the bonus of respecting each learner`s time.
