AbstractBased on light and scanning electron microscopical studies, two new and one specifically not identified gonad-infecting species of Philometra Costa, 1845 (Nematoda: Philometridae) are described from the ovary of marine fishes of the genus Epinephelus Bloch (Serranidae, Perciformes) in the Bay of Bengal, off the eastern coast of India: P. indica sp. nov. (male and females) from the honeycomb grouper E. merra Bloch, P. tropica sp. nov. (males and females) from the duskytail grouper E. bleekeri (Vaillant) and Philometra sp. (only females) from the cloudy grouper E. erythrurus (Valenciennes). Philometra indica is mainly characterized by the length of spicules 192–195 μm and the gubernaculum 84 μm, the distal tip of the gubernaculum without a dorsal protuberance, and by the presence of five pairs of caudal papillae. Philometra tropica is mainly characterized by the spicules conspicuously ventrally distended at their posterior halves, the distal tip of the gubernaculum with a dorsal protuberance, and the presence of three pairs of caudal papillae.

The trematodes of this report were killed in hot water, transferred immediately to Lavdowsky's FAA fixative for 24 hours, and then stored in 70% alcohol plus 2% glycerine. Whole mounts were stained in Mayer's carmalum and mounted in permount. Specimens have been deposited in the U.S. National Museum Helminthological Collection as indicated. All measurements are in microns (ftm).

Oil samples collected from three fishes namely Sting Ray (Dasyatis uarrnak), Anchovy (Setipinna taty), and Eel (Congresox talabonoides) from the Bay of Bengal were analyzed to determine their fatty acid composition with the aid of Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC). The saturated fatty acid contents were 52.95, 45.28 and 52.29 %; and the unsaturated fatty acid contents were 43.97, 54.72 and 33.39 % in D. uarnak, S. taty and C. talabonoides respectively. The highest polyunsaturated fatty acid content was found in S. taty (13.65 %) and the lowest was in D. uarnak (8.06 %). The ψ-3 fatty acid contents were 4.58, 3.65 and 9.91 % and the ψ-6 fatty acid contents were 3.48, 10.00 and 5.50 % in D. uarnak. S. taty and C. talabonoides respectively. Two essential fatty acid linoleic acid (4.12 %) and arachidonic acid (5.32 %) contents were found higher in S. taty whereas another essential fatty acid linolenic acid (8.98 %) found higher in C. talabonoides. The present study reports a new record of two marine fishes Filimanus similis (Feltes 1991) and Naso unicornis (Forsskål 1775) from Bangladesh waters. The specimens were collected from Saint Martin’s Island and Cox’s Bazar fish landing canter, Bangladesh. The specimens were diagnosed by analyzing their morphometric characters and DNA barcoding. The study also reports Naso as the first species of the genus ever recorded in the marine waters of Bangladesh.
