Food habits of river otter (Lontra canadensis) were quantified by analysis of 1191 scats systematically collected in the Winefred Lake area (Athabasca River drainage) of northeastern Alberta to assess seasonal prey selection, the utility of scats for fish inventory, and the prominence of beavers as otter food. Fish dominated the annual diet, being found in 91.9% of scats. Insects, molluscs, crustaceans, and waterfowl were also substantial prey. Less agile, abundant shallow-water fish, such as a catostomid and various cyprinids, were the most common prey. Coregonine fish dominated the diet during their autumn spawning, were rarely eaten in summer when in the hypolimnion, but appeared to be preferred prey. In winter, with virtually no open water, the diet was less diverse and was dominated by cyprinid and gasterosteid fish. Such a fish fauna exists in small lakes, bog ponds, and beaver impoundments. We hypothesize that in winter, otters select water bodies, and consequently available prey, on the basis of shoreline substrate and morphology and relative ease of passage from air to water. Otter scats contained 14 of 18 fish species known to be in the study area. However, the contents of scats overestimated the diversity offish species inhabiting individual lakes. Beavers were occasionally eaten by otters, but were a minor component of the diet.

Food habits of river otters (Lutra canadensis) inhabiting coastal British Columbia were studied by examining scat and stomach samples. Fish remains occurred in 99.4% of the scats while crustacean and bird remains were encountered in 7.2 and 4.2%, respectively. The majority of fish identified belong to six groups: Embiotocidae (occurring in 42.2% of the scats), Cottidae (40.5%), Pleuronectiformes (40.0%), Blennioidea (33.3%), Scorpaenidae (30.1%), and Hexagrammidae (13.1%). Of 69 stomachs collected by trappers, 86.9% contained remains of fish and 13% contained bird remains. Only two samples (2.9%) contained crustacean remains. Similar families of fish were found in both scat and stomach samples. Scat samples, collected on 10 consecutive visits to 55 sites from May 1977 through February 1978, indicated that, with the possible exception of bird remains, food types do not appear to vary seasonally. Otters in the marine environment utilize their habitat in the same manner that freshwater otters do; they are opportunistic feeders and rely primarily on midsize, slower moving fish that occur in the intertidal and subtidal regions close to shore.

Coyote food habits, home range, and interactions with wolves were examined on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska (1976–1980), to determine mechanisms of competition between the two species. Scat analyses (percent frequency occurrence) indicated coyotes relied primarily on snowshoe hare, porcupine, and small mammals. Coyote home ranges overlapped those of wolves and averaged 104.0 ± 44.6 (SE) and 70.2 ± 10.4 km2 for males and females, respectively. The ratio of coyotes to wolves captured on public roads was 10:1, while the ratio on roads closed to vehicle access was 0.71:1. Eight instances of wolves killing coyotes are reported. Lack of or minimal exploitation competition appears to allow coexistence of wolves and coyotes, while interference competition is believed to account for the difference in canid abundance near the two road types.

A study was conducted on the influence of maternal education level on food consumption, energy and nutrient intake, and dietary adequacy in 110 pre-school children from Madrid, Spain. With increasing maternal education, children consumed more sugar (p < 0.05), fruit (p < 0.05), and fish (p < 0.05). Snacking was more frequent with decreasing maternal education (p < 0.05). Though statistical significance was not reached, the consumption of pre-cooked foods was greater among children of mothers educated to a higher level, a phenomenon probably related to the work situation of these women. With respect to dietary composition, no significant differences were found between groups for macronutrient, fiber and energy intakes, except for energy supplied by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which was greater in the children of less educated women (p < 0.01). This is probably due to their greater consumption of sunflower seed oil. The diets of children belonging to well-educated mothers came closer to meeting the recommended intakes for folate, vitamin C, and iodine. It would seem that maternal educational level influences the food habits of children. Mothers with less education may require special advice in this area.

Abstract. Emotion-related impulsivity, defined as the tendency to say or do things that one later regret during periods of heightened emotion, has been tied to a broad range of psychopathologies. Previous work has suggested that emotion-related impulsivity is tied to an impaired function of the serotonergic system. Central serotonin synthesis relies on the intake of the essential amino acid, tryptophan and its ability to pass through the blood brain barrier. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the association between emotion-related impulsivity and tryptophan intake. Methods: Undergraduate participants (N = 25, 16 women, 9 men) completed a self-rated measure of impulsivity (Three Factor Impulsivity Index, TFI) and daily logs of their food intake and exercise. These data were coded using the software NutriNote to evaluate intakes of tryptophan, large neutral amino acids, vitamins B6/B12, and exercise. Results: Correlational analyses indicated that higher tryptophan intake was associated with significantly lower scores on two out of three subscales of the TFI, Pervasive Influence of Feelings scores r =  –.502, p < . 010, and (lack-of) Follow-Through scores, r =  –.407, p < . 050. Conclusion: Findings provide further evidence that emotion-related impulsivity is correlated to serotonergic indices, even when considering only food habits. It also suggests the need for more research on whether tryptophan supplements might be beneficial for impulsive persons suffering from a psychological disorder.

O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a frequência do consumo de alimentos processados e ultraprocessados e verificar a associação entre estado nutricional por adolescentes do ensino público e privado do município de Arroio do Tigre, RS. Trata-se de um estudo transversal realizado com adolescentes, com idade entre 10 e 15 anos, de uma escola pública e uma privada de Arroio do Tigre, RS. O estado nutricional foi avaliado pelo índice de massa corporal. Aplicou-se um questionário de frequência alimentar contendo alimentos processados e ultraprocessados. A amostra foi composta por 64 adolescentes com idade média de 12,03±1,15 anos, sendo 53,1% da escola pública. A maioria dos adolescentes encontravam-se eutróficos (p=0,343), e quando comparado com o consumo de alimentos processados e ultraprocessados, a maioria dos escolares eutróficos relataram maior frequência no consumo de balas e chicletes (50,0%) e barra de cereais (51,0%), de 1 a 3 vezes por semana (p=0,004; p=0,029, respectivamente). Houve também uma maior frequência de consumo de alimentos processados e ultraprocessados como pizza (73,5%; p0,001), refrigerante (58,8%; p=0,036) e biscoito recheado (58,8%; p=0,008) entre 1 a 3 vezes por semana na escola pública em comparação a escola privada. O consumo de suco de pacote (p=0,013) foi relatado não ser consumido pela maioria dos alunos da escola particular em comparação a escola pública. Os dados encontrados evidenciam um consumo expressivo de alimentos processados e ultraprocessados pelos adolescentes de ambas as escolas, destacando alimentos com alto teor de açúcar e sódio.Palavras-chave: Hábitos alimentares. Most of the adolescents were eutrophic (p=0.343), and when compared to the consumption of processed and ultraprocessed foods, most eutrophic schoolchildren reported a higher frequency of bullets and chewing gum (50.0%) and cereal bars (51.0%), 1 to 3 times per week (p=0.004, p=0.029, respectively). There was also a higher frequency of consumption of processed and ultraprocessed foods such as pizza (73.5%, p0.001), refrigerant (58.8%, p=0.036) and stuffed biscuit (58.8%, p=0.008) between 1 to 3 times a week in public school compared to private school. Consumption of packet juice (p=0.013) was reported not to be consumed by the majority of private school students compared to public school. Conclusion: The data found evidenced an expressive consumption of processed and ultraprocessed foods by the adolescents of both schools, highlighting foods with high sugar and sodium content.Keywords: Food Habits.
