This paper applies techniques of demographic analysis to official data of Greece to obtain net migration estimates by age, sex and citizenship for the intercensal period 1991-2001. It is found that the overall net immigration rate for the decade is 6.3 per 100 resident population and the contribution of foreign immigrants to this figure is 88.2 per cent. 85.4 % of the net immigrants are of working age and 70.3 % of net immigrant women are of reproductive age. The results of the study can be used to formulate assumptions regarding the migration component when handling population estimates and projections.

This article provides an estimate of the human capital value of migration to Reading in the period 1851-1871 to the town's economy. This is determined by estimating total net migration to the town across this period by age and sex and assigning all migrants a value for expected lifetime economic output less expected lifetime consumption costs. The final figures are contextualised by comparison with the value of social overhead capital used to fund significant local infrastructure projects in the same time period and show that, from a human capital perspective, the value of migration to Reading was very significant. This article thus addresses significant historiographical gaps in the study of Victorian labour migration to southern provincial towns and provides an original perspective to studies of the economic value of migration and its role in the growth of such communities.

Abstract Wet deposition estimates were computed from monthly wet precipitation samples collected in the Lake Superior Basin. Sulphate and nitrogen loadings from wet precipitation corresponded to 142 and 40 thousand tonnes per year. On a percentage basis, wet deposition of sulphate and nitrogen accounted for 21% and 54%, respectively, of the total load. Atmospheric sources for other major ions ranged from 1 to 10%. Atmospheric deposition at the eastern end of Lake Superior was higher than the western end of the Basin. The relative accuracy of these estimates were examined in relation to the changes in lake chemistry in Lake Superior from 1973 to 1983.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to provide a new perspective on finite element accuracy. Starting from a geometrical reading of the Bramble–Hilbert lemma, we recall the two probabilistic laws we got in previous works that estimate the relative accuracy, considered as a random variable, between two finite elements {P_{k}} and {P_{m}} ({k<m}). Then we analyze the asymptotic relation between these two probabilistic laws when the difference {m-k} goes to infinity. New insights which qualify the relative accuracy in the case of high order finite elements are also obtained.

AbstractWe study international mobility in academia, with a focus on the migration of published researchers to and from Russia. Using an exhaustive set of over 2.4 million Scopus publications, we analyze all researchers who have published with a Russian affiliation address in Scopus-indexed sources in 1996–2020. The migration of researchers is observed through the changes in their affiliation addresses, which altered their mode countries of affiliation across different years. While only 5.2% of these researchers were internationally mobile, they accounted for a substantial proportion of citations. Our estimates of net migration rates indicate that while Russia was a donor country in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it has experienced a relatively balanced circulation of researchers in more recent years. These findings suggest that the current trends in scholarly migration in Russia could be better framed as brain circulation, rather than as brain drain. Overall, researchers emigrating from Russia outnumbered and outperformed researchers immigrating to Russia. Our analysis on the subject categories of publication venues shows that in the past 25 years, Russia has, overall, suffered a net loss in most disciplines, and most notably in the five disciplines of neuroscience, decision sciences, mathematics, biochemistry, and pharmacology. We demonstrate the robustness of our main findings under random exclusion of data and changes in numeric parameters. Our substantive results shed light on new aspects of international mobility in academia, and on the impact of this mobility on a national science system, which have direct implications for policy development. Methodologically, our novel approach to handling big data can be adopted as a framework of analysis for studying scholarly migration in other countries.

This study addresses the impact of firm- and time-specific attributes on the accuracy of composite forecasts of annual earnings, constructed from time-series, price-based, and analysts' forecasts. The attributes examined include firm size, analysts' coverage, and time periods pre-dating and following the implementation of regulation fair disclosure. Our results indicate that the relative accuracy of the composite forecasts is time-specific. In the pre-regulation fair disclosure period, composite forecasts significantly outperform each of the three individual forecast sources. Moreover, the extent of improvement in accuracy of composite forecasts is significantly higher for the smaller and lightly-covered firms. Collectively, these results suggest that the predictive accuracy of composite forecasts is contextual.

Abstract Introduction Total sleep deprivation (TSD) has been shown to impair performance on a two-phase attentional control task, the AX-type continuous performance task with switch (AX-CPTs). Here we investigate whether the observed AX-CPTs impairments are a downstream consequence of TSD-induced non-specific effects (e.g., reduced vigilant attention) or reflect a distinct impact on attentional control. Methods N=55 healthy adults (aged 26.0±0.7y; 32 women) participated in a 4-day laboratory study with 10h baseline sleep (22:00-08:00) followed by 38h TSD and then 10h recovery sleep. At baseline (09:00 day 2) and after 25h and 30h TSD (09:00 and 14:00 day 3), subjects were tested on a 10min psychomotor vigilance test (PVT), an assay of vigilant attention, and on the AX-CPTs. The AX-CPTs required subjects to differentiate designated target from non-target cue-probe pairs. In phase 1, target trials occurred frequently, which promoted prepotent anticipatory responses; in phase 2, the target pair was switched. Accuracy of responses to various different AX-CPTs trial types was expressed relative to accuracy on phase 1 neutral (non-target cue and probe) trials, which should capture non-specific impairments on the task. For all three test sessions, these relative accuracy measures, along with accuracy on phase 1 neutral trials and lapses (RT&gt;500ms) on the PVT, were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA). Results The PCA revealed three statistically independent factors. Following varimax rotation, factor 1 (36.3% variance explained) and factor 3 (14.8% variance explained) each had high loadings for relative accuracy on multiple AX-CPTs trial types from phases 1 and 2; whereas factor 2 (17.9% variance explained) had high loadings for accuracy on phase 1 neutral trials, relative accuracy on phase 1 target trials, and PVT lapses. Conclusion These results indicate a statistical separation between AX-CPTs phase 1 neutral trials and phase 1 target trials, in conjunction with PVT lapses, versus the various other AX-CPTs trial types. This suggests a dissociation between TSD-induced, non-specific impairments on the task—potentially related to reduced vigilant attention—and TSD-induced specific impairments related to attentional control. Thus, TSD-induced deficits in attentional control are unlikely to be a downstream consequence of non-specific impairments. Support (if any) CDMRP grant W81XWH-16-1-0319
