The origin of lipid containing cells in atheromatous lesion has been disputed. Geer in his study on atheromatous lesions of rabbit aorta, suggested that the early lesion is composed mainly of lipid-laden macrophages and the later lesion has a mixed population of macrophages and smooth muscle cells. Parker on the other hand, was able to show evidence that the rabbit lesion is primarily composed of lipid-laden cells of smooth muscle origin. The above studies and many others were done on an intact lesion without any attempt of cellular isolation previous to their ultrastructural studies. Cell isolation procedures have been established for atherosclerotic lesions through collagenase and elastase digestion Therefore this procedure can be utilized to identify the cells involved in rabbit atheroma.

Lymphoid cells were analyzed within pulmonary infiltrates of six patients with lymphoproliferative disorders involving lungs by immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase techniques utilizing monoclonal antibodies to cell surface antigens T11 (total T), T4 (inducer/helper T), T8 (cytotoxic/suppressor T) and B1 (B cells) and the antisera against heavy (G,A,M) and light (kappa, lambda) immunoglobulin chains. Three patients had pseudolymphoma, two patients had lymphoma and one patient had lymphomatoid granulomatosis.A mixed population of cells was present in tissue infiltrates from the three patients with pseudolymphoma, IgM-kappa producing cells constituted the main B cell type in one patient. In two patients with lymphoma pattern the infiltrates were composed exclusively of T4+ cells and IgG-lambda B cells predominated slightly in the patient with lymphomatoid granulomatosis.

Dynamic changes in spatial microbial distribution in mixed-population biofilms were experimentally determined using a microslicer technique and simulated by a biofilm accumulation model (BAM). Experimental results were compared with the model simulation. The biofilms cultured in partially submerged rotating biological contactors (RBC) with synthetic wastewater were used as test materials. Experimental results showed that an increase of substrate loading rate (i.e., organic carbon and NH4-N) resulted in the microbial stratification in the biofilms. Heterotrophs defeated nitrifiers and dominated in the outer biofilm, whereas nitrifiers were diluted out in the outer biofilm and forced into the inner biofilm. At higher organic loading rates, a stronger stratified microbial spatial distribution was observed, which imposed a severe internal oxygen diffusion limitation on nitrifiers and resulted in the deterioration of nitrification efficiency. Model simulations described a general trend of the stratified biofilm structure. However, the actual stratification was stronger than the simulated results. For implication in the reactor design, when the specific carbon loading rate exceeds a certain limit, nitrification will be deteriorated or require a long start-up period due to the interspecies competition resulting in oxygen diffusion limitation. The extend of microbial stratification in the biofilm is especially important for determination of feasibility of nitrification in the presence of organic matters.
