Previous researchers have described the relation between physical self-concept and body mass in adolescents, but those relationships have not been clearly specified by gender. The purpose of this study is to explore physical self-concepts of normal-weight and over-weight Serbian adolescents with respect to gender. The sample consisted of 417 primary school students (229 boys and 188 girls) with the average age 13.6 (SD=0.73) years who were divided into normal-weight and overweight groups according to body mass index. To assess the multidimensional physical self-concept, Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) was administered. Results showed that overweight adolescents had significantly lower scores than normal-weight on all PSDQ scales except Health and Strength. Differences were greater among girls than boys. Discriminant analysis showed that the scales Body Fat, Endurance and Sports Competence best differentiated normal-weight boys from other students. Also, discriminant analysis showed that, besides the scale Body Fat, scales Flexibility, Self-Esteem, and Coordination best differentiated normal-weight girls from other students. Results indicate that for better understanding of the relationship between adolescent?s physical self-concept and body mass one must take gender into account. Results are potentially valuable for preventing overweight through physical education.

In Turkey due to changes in the age starting school implemented during the 2012-2013 academic year, children ages from 60 months to 84 months were subject to the same educational program in the same class. By the 2015-2016 academic year these children were at the end of 4th class. This research aimed to investigate the Turkish and mathematic lesson success, academic self-concepts and self-esteem of 4th class students and determine the opinions of class teachers on this topic. The research used a mixed method pattern with convergent parallel pattern. At the end of the research quantitative findings relating to Turkish and mathematic lesson success according to age starting school and educational level of parents; Turkish and mathematic lesson academic self-concept and self-esteem according to age starting school; and qualitative findings of class teacher opinions were compared, interpreted and discussed in light of the literature.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between anxiety, self-esteem, happiness index and primary school students’ academic performance in Chilean adolescents from the Biobío province. Methodology: 733 (46.1% girls; 12 (1.3 years)) public primary school students that completed the 2018 Health and School Performance Survey carried out in the Biobío province were included in this cross-sectional analysis. The BECK Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was used to measure anxiety while happiness index and self-esteem were measured using the subjective happiness scale and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, respectively. School performance was measured by grade point average (GPA) of language, math, physical education and cumulative GPA, and behavior associated with cognition in the school context was also considered. The relationship between mental health indicators and school performance was investigated using a one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation. Results: In comparison to students with low anxiety levels and high self-esteem and happiness levels, students with higher anxiety levels, lower self-esteem and happiness levels perceived themselves as having memory problems. They were also slower to solve math problems, had a shorter attention span in class and presented more difficulties in solving complex tasks, as well as being more nervous during testing. These students also got the lowest grade point average in math, language and physical education. Conclusion: High anxiety levels, low self-esteem and low happiness levels were associated with lower school performance and weaker behavior associated with cognition in Chilean adolescents. Implementing plans of emotional education and mental health could improve academic achievement.

  Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre los indicadores de adiposidad corporal con la coordinación motora (CM) en niños de ambos sexos entre 8 a 11 años de edad. Metodología: Se efectuó un estudio descriptivo (correlacional). Se estudió a 82 escolares (36 niñas y 46 niños) entre 8 a 11 años de edad. Se evaluó el peso, estatura y circunferencia de la cintura. Se calculó el Índice de Masa Corporal IMC. Se evaluó la prueba de coordinación motora CM de Körper koordinations test Für Kinder (KTK). Se determinó tres categorías por IMC (Normopeso, sobrepeso y obesidad). Resultados: Se observó correlaciones negativas entre los valores del cociente del KTK con el IMC y CC. En las niñas (r= -0.24 a -0.28) y en los niños (r= -0.46 a -0.48). Los niños clasificados como normopeso presentaron mayor cociente de KTK (121.4±29.2puntos) que los clasificados con sobrepeso (102.3±26.3puntos) y obesidad (89.2±21.3puntos) (p<0.05). Conclusión: La CM se relacionó inversamente con la adiposidad corporal en niños de ambos sexos. Además, los niños clasificados como normopesos evidenciaron un mejor rendimiento en la CM que los niños con sobrepeso y obesos. Abstract. Objective: To determine the relationship between indicators of body fat and motor coordination (MC) in children of both sexes aged 8 to 11 years old. Methodology: A descriptive (correlational) study was carried out. A total of 82 schoolchildren (36 girls and 46 boys) aged 8 to 11 years old were studied. Weight, height, and waist circumference (WC) were evaluated. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. The Körper koordinations test Für Kinder (KTK) for MC was evaluated. Three BMI categories were determined (normal weight, overweight, and obesity). Results: Negative correlations were observed between the KTK ratio values, BMI, and WC, both in girls (r = -0.24 to -0.28) and in boys (r = -0.46 to -0.48). Children classified as normal weight had higher KTK ratio (121.4 ± 29.2 points) than those classified as overweight (102.3 ± 26.3 points) and obesity (89.2 ± 21.3 points) (p <0.05). Conclusion: MC was inversely related to body fat in children of both sexes. Furthermore, children classified as normal weight showed better performance in MC than overweight and obese children.

Introduction: The prevalence of pediatric obesity is increasing. Finding the most effective preventive measures for the development of obesity in each country requires accurate epidemiological data on the number of obese children and adolescents, and their habits regarding nutrition and activity. The objective of this study was evaluate diet and physical activity in primary school students in relation to the occurrence of obesity, to determine the prevalence of overweight, mark the basic causes of this phenomenon and to establish measures for treatment and prevention.Methods: pupils 1-8. grades of primary schools were surveyed in written forms in terms of nutrition and physical activity, and measured height and weight, body mass index (BMI-body mass index) was calculated by whichwas estimated the level of nourishment: BMI> p (percentile) 5-malnutrition, p 5-85 proper body weight, p 85-95 over-nutrition, p> 95 obesity.Results: The study comprised 2329 pupils from 10 primary schools in the Canton of Sarajevo. Number of respondents by age and gender was balanced: I-IV 1077, V-VIII 1252; M-1226 and -1103 W. Obese and overweight was 22.46%, 62.53% of normal weight and 15 underweight, 01%. Most children eat a sandwich from school 34.63%, and food from the bakery 23.36% and 23.64% a sandwich from home. Still-dense juices are mostly drunk, even 22.34% of the students, a maximum of 52.8% water. Daily candy had taken 53.21% of all primary school students. 33.80% of the students were active on physical activity lessons and daily only 28.27%.Conclusions: The overweight problem in relation to the way of nutrition and physical activity is evident. The most important factors in] uencing the development of obesity undernutrition of children in school, the high frequency of intake of sweets and thick juice, an inadequate level ofphysical activity and sedanteran way of life.
