Empirical records consistently point to the fact that the phenomenon of stress is characteristic of service professions, especially of teacher?s. Although stress in teachers is a problem of public interest, it is still a relatively new field of empirical investigations. Data available show that stress in teachers can have negative effects on school as an organization teacher professional achievement, his/her and his/her family psychosocial status. The most frequent symptoms of a prolonged professional stress are anxiety, depression, frustration, unfriendly behavior towards students and colleagues, emotional weariness, and extreme tension. Health and psychological problems cause, most frequently, the reduction of self-esteem job dissatisfaction, job resignation, absenteeism, and wrong decision-making. In an attempt to call professional public attention to negative effects of stress on the outcomes of teacher work, we have analyzed four important aspects of stress teachers experience in their everyday work (a) definition and measurement of stress, (b) distribution and sources of stress (problem behaviors in students, poor working conditions, lack of time, poor school ethos), (c) teacher personality traits (sex, age, work experience, locus of control, job satisfaction, intention to resign absenteeism), (d) strategies for overcoming and reducing negative effects of stress (direct action techniques, palliative techniques).

More liberalized visiting policies have not become universal and many hospital intensive care units (ICUs) still have restrictive visiting hours even though the benefits of more lenient visiting hours outweigh the negative effects. This article describes the meaning and effects of flexible visiting policies upon family coping for the author and her family when a family member is a patient in an ICU. The article includes a historical review of visiting policies in the ICU, a description of the philosophy of the time, and a description of the change in nursing beliefs about the concept of caring. The influence of Leininger’s and Watson’s theories of caring on nursing and nursing education are discussed and connected with the trend toward less restrictive visiting policies.

Abstract. The problems of discipline and coexistence in class are a general concern in mandatory secondary education. Consequently, it is essential to identify the causes and establish action guidelines that can improve the coexistence of students in class. The purpose of this research is to identify the main actions that could be applied by teachers when students in mandatory secondary education engage in problematic behaviors in order to improve the coexistence atmosphere and classroom management. The participants are 147 instructors of Physical Education who are teaching actively in institutions of mandatory secondary education. Participants completed two questionnaires created ‘ad hoc’ to evaluate the students’ problematic behaviors regarding coexistence in these classes. The statistical analysis we used was the chi-squared test to associate these behaviors to other variables of interest. The results of this research provide guidance for the use of different classroom management techniques considering such problem behaviors. Furthermore, variables such as the years of work experience and the teacher gender were critical regarding the type of actions implemented. This work provides a proposal for intervention in the case of problem behaviors with the aim to be progressive, inclusive and effective.

This chapter examines the myriad ways that individuals in a group can function. In a rehearsal environment, conductors who understand group dynamics can endeavor to counteract the common negative effects of group work, and elevate the positive aspects of working within a team. The chapter further explores methods to create accountability in the choral rehearsal, with the goal of inspiring each individual singer to consistently put forth their full effort. Additionally, the author discusses various methods for designing effective assessments that will encourage practice and accountability. This chapter also examines the role priming can play in setting up a positive rehearsal environment, and considers the positive and negative effects of stress on one’s ability to learn.

At first glance, the actions of Fr. Charles Bowden, a member of the Brompton Oratory in London, toward a troubled, adolescent, Roman Catholic girl, Eliza (in some reports referred to as Ellen) McDermot, would appear as a praiseworthy and unselfish example of Christian charity. Fr. Bowden, a young cleric, acted on information he allegedly learned from Miss McDermot in the confessional and worked to save her from a possible life of ruin on the London streets. Fr. Bowden eventually urged the young sixteen year old pregnant girl to seek refuge at a local convent where she would have the opportunity to repent and reform her life. McDermot followed his advice, but this seemingly innocent plan to save her soul fanned the flames of hatred against Catholicism and sisterhoods. Without informing her family, Miss McDermot secretly took up residence in a convent, and she did not reveal the location to her mother. When her family complained about this so-called ‘abduction’, critics of Roman Catholicism, and sisterhoods in particular, took their campaign to the public and attacked the actions of Fr. Bowden in letters to the press, graphic pamphlets, and speeches in Parliament. The case of Eliza McDermot quickly emerged as another example which illustrated the evils of Catholic convents, but it failed to capture public attention. Several reasons help to explain the short-lived notoriety of this story, especially the failure to prove that Bowden had broken any English laws.
