Background/Aim. Numerous studies were aimed to detect and characterize various tumor markers in patients with oral planocellular carcinoma in order to reduce moratlity and mobidity rates of these patients, as well as to establish the correlation between the expression of specific tumor marker and prognostic outcome. The aim of this study was to determine patohistological characteristics of tumor and peritumor tissue in patients with oral planocellular carcinoma, with special regard to the expression of Bcl-2, as well as to point out the significance of clinicomorphological correlations for clinical use. Methods. Sixty-two patients with oral planocellular carcinoma, stage II and III, were examined. The patients were surgically treated for this condition at the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery, Military Medical Academy, Belgrade. Surgical specimens were obtained from both tumor and peritumoral tissues. Patohistologic degree of tumor differentiation and the immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2 were determinated for each specimens. Results. Twenty-four (39%) patients had tumor dimension T1, while six (9%) and thirty-two (52%) patients had tumor dimension T2 and T3, respectively. Patohistologic analysis of peritumor connective, fat, muscle and bone tissue samples confirmed the presence of tumor infiltration. The expression of Bcl-2 in peritumor tissue samples correlated significantly with tumor?s histologic grade (? = 0.468; p < 0.001), nuclear grade (? = 0.430; p < 0.001) and nucleocytoplasmic ratio (? = 0.410; p = 0.001). Conclusion. This results suggest that the expression of Bcl-2 in combination with patohistologic findings could have a prognostic value in patients with oral planocellular carcinoma.

Background. Vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap is commonly used in the reconstruction of composite bony and soft tissue defects of the lower third of the face due to the outstanding quality of its cutaneous component. The aim was to evaluate the primary and overall success in the reconstruction of mandibular defects, following war injuries, with vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap. Methods. At the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Military Medical Academy Belgrade, there were eight patients with this kind of defect following war injury, and the mandible was reconstructed with a vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap. Bony compartment of the graft was harvested as up to 11 cm long segment of radial circumference. Results. The localization and structure of the defect, features of a harvested compound graft, the procedure of the reestablishment of the mandibular continuity was presented as well as immediate and late complications during the consolidation period, and the primary successful reconstruction in 87.5% of the patients. Conclusion. The primary and overall success in the mandibular defects reconstruction with a vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap was equal or even better than those presented in the literature on the reconstruction of the similar defects after tumor resections.

Vascularized osteocutaneous scapular flaps belong into the most convenient ones in reconstruction of mandibular defects followed by massive loss of adjacent skin and mucous membrane due to its vascular supply, bulkiness, suitability and mobility of cutaneous component of the flap. In seven wounded patients such defects of the mandible and adjacent soft tissues after war wounding have been reconstructed at the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery of the Military Medical Academy - Belgrade during the six years period with vascularized osteocutaneous scapular grafts. Here we present localization and structure of the defect, features of harvested compound graft, the procedure of reestablishment of mandibular continuity, immediate and late complications during the consolidation period, as well as the analysis of the success rate.

The article presents the scientific, pedagogical and medical activities of the graduate of the Gatchina Nikolaevsky Orphan Institute and the Imperial Military Medical Academy (IMMA), surgeon privat-docent dentist Peter Fedorovich Fedorov, who worked in the IMMA for 22 years. It should be noted that the name of privat-docent P F. Fedorov was undeservedly forgotten. Only in the early 2000s, at the initiative of the staff of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, P F. Prokvatilov, D. Yu. Madaya, V F. Chernysha, G. S. Chepik, the articles about privat-docent P F. Fedorov began to publish in the collections of scientific conferences. P. F. Fedorov was a strong and consistent supporter of creating odontology department and clinic in IMMA for training of specialists with higher medical education who can treat dental diseases, diseases of oral organs and maxillofacial area. Long-term scientific, pedagogical and medical work of privatdocent P. F. Fedorov within the IMMA, his efforts and persistance in creating the department and clinic, make it possible to consider him the truly founder of domestic military odontology, and 1891 was defined the date of official recognition of military dentistry as an independent clinical discipline,, when, by the decision of the Conference, a private health center on dental diseases was opened in IMMA and a competition for a vacant position was announced. November 28, 1892, when the Conference of the IMMA approved the «Program of training in dental diseases», compiled by the assistant professor P. F. Fedorov, he began to give his lectures to students of the academy and military doctors. In 2007, a group of authors (G. A. Prokhvkilov, V. F. Chernysh, G. S. Chepik) published the monograph «P. F. Fedorov — the founder of domestic military dentistry « that was reissued in 2009 with the assistance of the Head of the Medical Service of the Russian Navy, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Colonel of the Medical Service, Professor V.K. Sementsov under the name «Privat-docent P. F. Fedorov» (Strokes to the portrait). February 5, 2008, by the decision of the Head of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry, Colonel of Medical Service, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honored Doctor of Russia, Professor G. I. Prkhvilov, a portrait of privat-docent for dental diseases IVMA P. F. Fedorov, written by a member of the Union of Artists of Russia A. A. Odeynikom was placed in the conference hall of the department.

Abstract Immunoglobulin (Ig) gene rearrangements are used to define clonality of suspected B-lineage malignancy in tissue samples. To determine whether such rearrangements could be identified in plasma, we screened plasma from 14 consecutive patients with AIDS-related lymphoma with multiplex Ig primers. Clonally rearranged Ig DNA was detected in plasma from 7 of 14 patients. Patients in whom clonal Ig DNA remained detectable after combination chemotherapy died with lymphoma. Tumor was available from 1 patient, and the IgH amplification products from plasma and tumor were sequenced and confirmed to be identical. Ig DNA rearrangements in plasma may be useful as a lymphoma-specific tumor marker, and failure to clear clonal Ig DNA may identify patients at high risk for failure of standard therapy.

SummaryAcute myocardial infarctions were produced by ligature of the left frontal descending coronary artery in 9 dogs. The possibility of scintigraphic imaging with 99mTc-DMSA 4 hrs after intravenous administration was studied. The infarctions were 4, 24 and 48 hrs old. The in vivo scan was positive in only one dog with a 4-hr old infarction. The in vivo scans were confirmed by the analysis of the radioactivity in tissue samples. The accumulation of the radiopharmaceutical increased slightly in 48-hr old lesions; however, this increase was not sufficient for a positive scintigraphic finding. Thus, we do not recommend 99mTc-DMSA for clinical use in acute lesions.
