Evaluation o f cytotoxicity is a first step in assessment of dental materials biocompatibility. Necessity for unique criteria in researches resulted in international standard methodology (ISO). The aim of this study was to assess the cytotoxicity of four restorative materials (three glas ionomer cements and one composite material) and to define adventages and disadventages of common ISO methodology for evaluation of this aspect of dental materials biocompatibility. Research was designed according to ISO/TC 106/1995 and ISO/ 10993-5/1994 methodology. Materials used in this investigation were Fuji IILC (GC), Vitiemer (3M), Ionosit fill (DMG-Hamburg), Luxat (DMG-Hamburg). Evaluation of cytotoxicity was carried out on standardized Human Diploid Cell Lung WI-38. Obtained results showed expressive cytotoxic effect of all investigated materials without statisticaly significant difference. Estimation of material biocompatibility and assessment of obtained results can be made only after establishment of correlation with test results. Common ISO methodology is simple for conductance and reproduction, and use of cell cultures in researches is painless, cost effective and without moral or ethical dilemma.

Sorghum has a growing popularity for food, feed, biofuel, and therefore needs to be developed. The research aimed to compare the effectiveness of pedigree and modified bulk selection methods for improving yield in three sorghum populations. The genetic materials used were 60 F6 lines from three populations, namely PI 10-90-A x Numbu, PI 150-20-A x Numbu and PI 150-20-A x Kawali which had been selected using pedigree and modified bulk methods. The experiment was conducted from October 2018 to February 2019 at the Cikabayan Experimental Station of IPB University, Dramaga, Bogor. The experiment was arranged in an augmented design with six checks, namely Kawali, Numbu, PI 10-90-A, PI 150-20-A, Samurai 1, and Samurai 2 which were replicated four times. Observations were made on agronomic traits and yield. Plant height and grain weight per panicle had high heritability and large genotypic coefficients of variation. The contrast test results showed significant differences between populations in plant height, panicle length, days of harvesting and 100-seed weight. On the other hand, no significant difference was observed among selection methods, indicating that both methods were equally effective for increasing sorghum yield. The pedigree selection and modified bulk selection increased grain yield per panicle by 14.1 g and 18.2 g respectively. Bulk of the best genotypes in early generation could be an alternative of bulk selection method. Keywords: contrast test, differential selection, genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability

The materials used in the treatment of an adult patient with severe cleft palate need to be choose very carefull, according with the biological aspects. First of all, is mandatory to choose a proper material for endodontic treatment and use a correct technique. Second, the cement used in order to fix a RPD (rapid palatinal disjunctor) has to be glass-ionomer cement, because the oral and nasal cavity are still communicating. On the other hand, the dental ceramic material used in the prosthetic treatment has to be a special one, pink-colored in those regions where cleavage is present. For this reason, the cases with cleavage need a complex treatment, usually during a few years and several steps. They need a good collaboration between doctors of different specialities: maxillo-facial surgery, orthodontics, prosthetics and plastic surgery. The aim of the present study is to underline the assessment of ceramic dental materials during the laborious treatment in the case of an adult with cleft palate, in order to obtain the best results.

One of the restorative dental materials that is continuously developed is Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC). The aim of this research is to know whether there is influence of nanofilled resin coating application on GIC to reduce surface roughness. In this study GIC type II (EQUIA Forte, GC, Japan) was used to be mechanically manipulated and inserted into a mold which produced a sample of 6.0±0.3 mm in diameter and 3.0±0.2 mm in height. GIC samples were divided into 2 groups namely 10 GIC samples were not coated with nanofilled resin coating as control group and 10 GIC samples were coated with nanofilled resin coating as treatment group. GIC samples were tested immediately and then immersed in sterile distilled water in a 37°C incubator. After 24 hours, GIC samples were surface roughness tested using a Surface Roughness Tester. Then all samples were brushed using a soft bristle mechanical tooth brush for 1 hour. After brushing, the sample is tested for final surface roughness. The results showed an increase in surface roughness in non-coated group/control (0.005 ± 0,328mm) and coated group (0.015±0.240 mm). Statistical data analysis using unpaired t test showed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the increasing of surface roughness between control group and treatment group. It can be concluded that application of nanofilled resin coating to GIC cannot reduce the roughness of GIC surface.

Introduction. Despite the development of restorative dentistry bond between materials and hard dental tissues is still not satisfying and often leads to marginal discoloration, microleakage, secondary caries and postoperative sensitivity. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical efficacy of different liners and oxalate-based desensitizer in preventing the occurrence of postoperative sensitivity. Material and Methods. This clinical study included 120 patients in which two homologous contralateral posterior teeth were restored with composite material and different liners. Patients were divided in three groups, depending on applied liner. In each patient, before the application of composite material in one tooth the liner was placed, while in the other tooth both the desensitizer and the same liner were used. The following liners were used: Calcimol LC, ANA Liner, Fuji II LC; desensitizer: BisBlock and composite material: Ceram-X Mono. Results. Teeth restored using Calcimol LC were the most sensitive after treatment whereas teeth restored with Fuji II LC showed the least postoperative sensitivity (Calcimol LC > ANA Liner > Fuji II LC). In the group of teeth restored with BisBlock postoperative sensitivity was observed in 6.7% restorations, while in the group where desensitizer was not used, sensitivity was noted in 15.8% of cases. There was statistically significant difference in the incidence of postoperative sensitivity between the group where desensitizer was used vs. group where it was not used (p<0.05). Conclusion. Glass-ionomer cement is more efficient in preventing postoperative sensitivity compared to compomer and light-curable calcium hydroxide in posterior composite restorations. The use of desensitizer reduced significantly the incidence of postoperative sensitivity.

Background: Lemons consist of 5-8% citric acid, have a pH of around 2.74. Drinks that have a critical pH of 5.5 can be said to be acidic drinks. Acidic drinks have the potential to cause corrosion of teeth and dental materials, one of which is stainless steel orthodontic wire. Stainless steel orthodontic wire is easily corroded, the wire has a composition of 71% Iron (Fe), 18% Chromium (Cr), 8% Nickel (Ni), and 0.2% Carbon (C). Corrosion is caused by the presence of inorganic components that act as electrolyte media that can trigger electrochemical reactions.Method: Each sample was placed on each uninsulated petridish and labeled as a marker. This is done by inserting orthodontic wire which is immersed into the incubator for 3.5 hours at 37℃. Then the sample is taken and the separation between the sample and the solution is carried out. After that, the measurement of Iron (Fe) ions was carried out using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotomery tool.Result: The results showed the average release of Iron (Fe) ions in the experimental group of lemon juice with a concentration of 25% was 0.067mg/L, a concentration of 50% was 0.090mg/L and a concentration of 100% was 0.135mg/L. The test results obtained using the One Way Anova test showed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05).Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the release of Iron (Fe) ions in stainless steel orthodontic wires between experimental groups, and there was no effect of soaking lemon juice (Citrus Limon (L.)) on the release of Iron (Fe) ions in stainless steel orthodontic wires.

Background and aim: Hypotension during cesarean section (CS) under spinal anesthesia has been a subject of scientific study for more than 50 years and the search for the most effective strategy to achieve hemodynamic stability remains challenging. Aim: The study was carried out to apply leg wrapping technique for the prevention of spinal-induced hypotension (SIH) during CS.Methods: Randomized Controlled Trial design was utilized at cesarean delivery operating room Mansoura General Hospital in El-Mansoura City during the period from May 2018 to November 2018. A purposive sample of 88 pregnant women, assigned randomly to an intervention group (n = 44) in which their legs wrapped with elastic crepe bandage and control group (n = 44) in which no wrapping was done. Data collected for maternal, neonatal hemodynamic and signs of hypotension, the feasibility of application and cost analysis. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of SIH and Ephedrine use among both groups (18.20% in leg wrapping group whereas 75% in control group). In addition, neonatal acidosis and NICU admission were less among leg wrapping group (11.40%, 9.10% respectively). Economically, leg wrapping technique was cost effective compared to the cost of the hospital regimen for treating SIH and admission to (NICU).Conclusion and recommendations: Leg wrapping technique was cost effective and an efficient method for decreasing SIH, neonatal acidosis and Ephedrine administration. It is recommended to apply leg wrapping technique in maternal hospitals' protocol of care for decreasing SIH during CS.

Abstract Objective External dacryocystorhinostomy is thought to cause mucociliary dysfunction by damaging the mucosa, in turn affecting ciliary activity and mucus quality. This study investigated the effect of external dacryocystorhinostomy on sinonasal function. Methods Patients scheduled for unilateral external dacryocystorhinostomy who underwent endoscopic nasal examination and paranasal sinus computed tomography were included in this study. A saccharine test was performed on the planned surgical side and the mucociliary clearance time was determined. The sinonasal quality of life was measured in all patients, pre-operatively and at six months post-operatively, using the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22. The Lund–Kennedy endoscopic score was also determined in all patients, both pre- and post-operatively. Results The study comprised 28 patients (22 females and 6 males). A statistically significant difference was found between the pre- and post-operative saccharine test results (p = 0.006), but not between the pre- and post-operative Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 scores (p > 0.05). Conclusion This study is one of only a few to investigate the effect of external dacryocystorhinostomy on sinonasal function. The results showed that external dacryocystorhinostomy impairs mucociliary clearance. The surgical procedure is well tolerated and does not significantly change nasal symptom scores.

OBJECTIVES: Shoulder pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder, which carries a high cost to healthcare systems. Exercise is a common conservative management strategy for a range of shoulder conditions and can reduce shoulder pain and improve function. Exercise classes that integrate education and self-management strategies have been shown to be cost-effective, offer psycho-social benefits and promote self-efficacy. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an 8-week educational and exercise-based shoulder rehabilitation programme following the introduction of evidence-based modifications. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of a shoulder rehabilitation programme at X Trust was conducted, comparing existing anonymised Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) and Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) scores from two cohorts of class participants from 2017-18 and 2018-19 that were previously collected by the physiotherapy team. Data from the two cohorts were analysed separately, and in comparison, to assess class efficacy. Descriptive data were also analysed from a patient satisfaction survey from the 2018-19 cohort. RESULTS: A total of 47 patients completed the 8-week shoulder rehabilitation programme during the period of data collection (2018-2019). The 2018-19 cohort showed significant improvements in SPADI (p 0.001) and PSFS scores (p 0.001). No significant difference was found between the improvements seen in the 2017-18 cohort and the 2018-19 cohort. 96% of the 31 respondents who completed the patient satisfaction survey felt the class helped to achieve their goals. CONCLUSION: A group-based shoulder rehabilitation class, which included loaded exercises and patient education, led to improvements in pain, disability and function for patients with rotator cuff related shoulder pain (RCRSP) in this outpatient setting, but anticipated additional benefits based on evidence were not observed.
