Phenological stages of white wine varieties grown in the "Radmilovac" collection vineyard were recorded during a three- year period. The included stages were: time of bud burst - shoot growth, flowering, v?raison and full ripening. The number of days, sum of active and sum of effective temperatures were established for each phenological stage, 12 features in total. The features such as the length of vegetative period from bud burst to full ripening and sum of active temperatures for the same period were of crucial importance for the classification of varieties. Based on climate characteristics and phenological observations of plant organ growth and development in some cultivars, the total of 66 cultivars, of 71 investigated, can be grown at Radmilovac. Late-maturing varieties cannot be successfully grown.

The aim of this paper is to establish the interaction of phenotypical variations, components of yield for the widest spread wine varieties and external factors of the Danube region in the central Serbia. The number of fruitful buds per vine for twenty-one varieties was the same, whereas the yield and the components of the yield were different. The growing season, from bud burst to full ripening of the grapevine and the sum of active temperatures for the same period, were of crucial importance. In the factor analysis, three factors have been singled out: the first factor couples the mean air temperature; the second factor delineates the values according to genotype characteristics, sugar content and acids in the must, and the third factor indicates that bunch weight had the major effect on the yield of grapes. By the application of bunch analysis, a hierarchy tree was formed to include the four groups of varieties. The most numerous group, consisting of 18 varieties, is characterized by top quality grapes (21.5% sugar content), medium yield (1.52 kg/m2) and a proportional relation of total acids (7.5 g/l) and this is achieved during the middle of the ripening period.

Phenology is concerned with the periodic phenomenon of the vine growing cycle (bud burst, flowering, veraison (color change), in relation to the climate.  It is a veritable biological clock of the vines.   The timing of the numerous operations in the vineyard (phytosanitary protection, defoliation, crop thinning….) is undertaken in accordance with the phenological stages. Since the precociousness of the latter is directly linked to the temperature, the phenology is also a marker of global warming.

In 2008, the European Commission highlighted the risk of wine mislabelling regarding the geographical origin and varietal identification. While analytical methods for the identification of wine by geographical origin exist, a reliable strategy for authentication of wine variety is still missing. Here, we investigate the suitability of the metabolomic fingerprinting of ethyl acetate wine extracts, using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. In total, 43 white wine samples (three varieties) were analysed within our study. The generated data were processed by principal component analysis and then by partial least squares discriminant analysis. The resulting statistical models were validated and assessed according to their R2 (cum) and Q2 (cum) parameters. The most promising models were based on positive ionisation data, enabling successful classification of 92% of wine samples.

Wines of three different grape varieties, Vranec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were examined for their characterisation in terms of anthocyanin and chromatic profiles, total polyphenols and antioxidant potential. Total, monomeric, polymeric and copigmented anthocyanins were determined by spectrophotometry and the individual anthocyanin compounds were quantified using HPLC-DAD. Chromatic profile was evaluated according to colour density, hue, % red, % blue, % yellow and brilliance (% dA). The established data were submitted to analysis of variance and principle component analysis in order to evaluate their potential for differentiation of wines according to variety and vintage. Vranec wines have shown distinctive characteristics, with the highest content of anthocyanins and values of colour intensity, % red and % dA, compared to the other two studied varieties. The content of petunidin-3-glucoside, peonindin-3-glucoside and anthocyanin acetates were established as possible markers for differentiation of Vranec wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines. However, none of the assayed parameters could be used for differentiation of Cabernet Sauvignon from Merlot wines. It was observed that wine age limits successful classification of the wines by variety according to anthocyanins. The chromatic parameters allowed distinguishing of young (aged up to 1 year) from old Vranec wines.

Most historical sources that describe the presence of Romanesco variety in vine-growing areas of Lazio Region (Italy) highlighted the variability of morphological traits within the variety. This partly justifies the presence of different synonyms, true or presumed, reported by many authors for this grape variety. With the aim of analysing this variability, eight accessions related to the variety, collected in Lazio Region and grown in the DAFNE grape germplasm collection, have been characterized over five productive seasons. The ampelographic description was carried out using 50 OIV morphological descriptors and ampelometric analyses were carried out on mature leaves by SuperAmpelo software. The DNA of the different accessions, extracted from young leaves, was analyzed using 14 microsatellite loci. Furthermore, at harvest, the grapes of each accession were sampled to assess main compositive characteristics. Results showed differences among accessions on some ampelographic descriptors of the mature leaf, of the bunch, and on phenological stages. Microsatellite profiles allowed for classification of the accessions into three distinct groups. Qualitative analysis of the berry skin showed differences among accessions in the content of the main classes of phenolic compounds.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the application of mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis, to provide a rapid screening tool for discriminating among different Italian monovarietal red wines based on the relationship between grape variety and wine composition in particular phenolic compounds.Methods and results: The MIR spectra (from 4000 to 700 cm‒1) of 110 monovarietal Italian red wines, vintage 2016, were collected and evaluated by selected multivariate data analyses, including principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (DA), support vector machine (SVM), and soft intelligent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA). Samples were collected directly from companies across different regions of Italy and included 11 grape varieties: Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Aglianico, Nerello Mascalese, Primitivo, Raboso, Cannonau, Teroldego, Sagrantino, Montepulciano and Corvina. PCA showed five wavelengths that mainly contributed to the PC1, including a much-closed peak at 1043 cm‒1, which correspond to the C–O stretch absorption bands that are important regions for glycerol, whereas the ethanol peaks at around 1085 cm‒1. The band at 877 cm‒1 are related to the C–C stretching vibration of organic molecules, whereas the asymmetric stretching for C–O in the aromatic –OH group of polyphenols is within spectral regions from 1050 to 1165 cm‒1. In particular, the (1175)–1100–1060 cm‒1 vibrational bands are combination bands, involving C–O stretching and O–H deformation of phenolic rings. The 1166–1168 cm‒1 peak is attributable to in-plane bending deformations of C–H and C–O groups of polyphenols, respectively, for which polymerisation may cause a slight peak shift due to the formation of H-bridges.The best result was obtained with the SVM, which achieved an overall correct classification for up to 72.2% of the training set, and 44.4% for the validation set of wines, respectively. The Sangiovese wines (n=19) were split into two sub-groups (Sang-Romagna, n=12 and Sang-Tuscany, n=7) considering the indeterminacy of its origins, which is disputed between Romagna and Tuscany. Although the classification of three grape varieties was problematic (Nerello Mascalese, Raboso and Primitivo), the remaining wines were almost correctly assigned to their actual classes.Conclusions: MIR spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics represents an interesting approach for the classification of monovarietal Italian red wines, which is important in quality control and authenticity monitoring.Significance and impact of the study: Authenticity is a main issue in winemaking in terms of quality evaluation and adulteration, in particular for origin certified/protected wines, for which the added marketing value is related to the link of grape variety with the area of origin. This study is part of the D-wine project “The diversity of tannins in Italian red wines”.
