New solid solution containing Mg(II) and Cu(II) complexes with hexadentate 1,3-propanediamine-N,N,N?,N?-tetraacetate ligand (1,3-pdta), [Mg(H2O)6] [Mg0.5Cu0.5(1,3-pdta)].2H2O was synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental microanalyses, molar conductivity, and spectroscopic (IR and UV-Vis) measurements. The spectroscopic data of [Mg(H2O)6][Mg0.5Cu0.5(1,3-pdta)].2H2O were compared with those for [Mg(H2O)6][Cu(1,3-pdta)].2H2O complex of the known molecular structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In vitro growth inhibition activity of [Mg(H2O)6][Mg0.5Cu0.5(1,3-pdta)].2H2O and [Mg(H2O)6][Cu(1,3-pdta)].2H2O against Colletotrichum acutatum and their effects on this fungus sporulation level are investigated. The obtained results showed that the highest percentage of inhibition for mycelium growth was achieved at a concentration of 500 ?g/mL for the investigated complexes. The biological activities of the investigated complexes were compared with those for the commercial formulation of fungicide captan (Method 480 SC).

In this work we have deposited silicon carbide (SiC) at 1300°C with the addition of small amounts of propylene. The use of propylene and high concentrations of methyltrichlorosilane (9 vol %) allowed the deposition of superhard SiC coatings (42 GPa). The superhard SiC could result from the presence of a SiC–C solid solution, undetectable by X-ray diffraction but visible by Raman spectroscopy. Another sample obtained by the use of 50 vol % Argon, also showed the formation of SiC with good properties. The use of a flat substrate together with the particles showed the importance of carrying out the analysis on actual particles rather than in flat substrates. We show that it is possible to characterize the anisotropy of pyrolytic carbon by Raman spectroscopy.

In this article, a method for the processing of chitosan from Pacific white shrimp shells is developed which involves three steps viz. demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation. The samples of chitosan with more than 90% degree of deacetylation (DD%) were obtained by FTIR. This indicated that the current processing method of shrimp shells was beneficial for chitosan production. The morphology of chitosan sample was determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns exhibited two peaks of crystalline character approximately at 10º and 20º (2θ). The effect of 0.1% (w/v) of chitosan on the growth of Penicillium digitatum was tested by an in vitro assay and the results showed an almost complete inhibition (98% ± 0.56).

Bis-aldehyde monomers 4-(4′-formyl-phenoxy)benzaldehyde (3a), 3-methoxy-4-(4′-formyl-phenoxy)benzaldehyde (3b), and 3-ethoxy-4-(4′-formyl-phenoxy)benzaldehyde (3c) were synthesized by etherification of 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (1) with 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2a), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2b), and 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2c), respectively. Each monomer was polymerized with p-phenylenediamine and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether to yield six poly(azomethine)s. Single crystal X-ray diffraction structures of 3b and 3c were determined. The structural characterization of the monomers and poly(azomethine)s was performed by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. Physicochemical properties of polymers were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), viscometry, UV–vis, spectroscopy and photoluminescence. These polymers were subjected to electrical conductivity measurements by the four-probe method, and their conductivities were found to be in the range 4.0 × 10−5 to 6.4 × 10−5 Scm−1, which was significantly higher than the values reported so far.

AbstractMagnesium acesulfamate, Mg(C4H4NO4S)2·6H2O, was prepared by the reaction of acesulfamic acid and magnesium carbonate in aqueous solution, and characterized by elemental analysis. Its crystal structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The substance crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̅ with one molecule per unit cell. The FTIR spectrum of the compound was also recorded and is briefly discussed. Some comparisons with other simple acesulfamate and saccharinate salts are also made.

This paper describes the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)germane. In addition to a complete NMR spectroscopic characterization, including the rarely used 73Ge NMR spectroscopy, Ge(C2F5)4 was studied by IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry as well as X-ray diffraction analysis. A 73Ge NMR investigation as well as an X-ray diffraction study of the related germane Ge(CF3)4 are also included.

AbstractThe crystal chemistry of a natural, gem-quality, blue-grey Zn-rich spinel crystal from Jemaa, Kaduna State, Nigeria, was studied using electron microprobe, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, optical absorption and Raman spectroscopies. The composition of the crystal approaches the gahnite endmember (ZnAl2O4), ∼94 mol.%, with the remainder being dominated by a hercynite component (FeAl2O4). The unit-cell dimension is 8.0850(3) Å and the tetrahedral and octahedral bond distances are determined as T–O 1.9485(6) Å and M–O 1.9137(3) Å. Crystal chemical analysis resulted in the empirical structural formula T(Zn0.94Fe2+0.03Al0.03)M (Al1.96Fe2+0.03Fe3+0.01)O4, which shows Zn and Al almost fully ordered in the tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated T and M sites, respectively. Raman spectra obtained using the excitation of the blue 473.1 nm line of a Nd:YAG laser display three of the five Raman-active modes predicted for the general oxide spinel group of minerals. These are the Eg mode at 420.6 cm–1 and the T2g modes at 510 cm–1 and 661 cm–1, due to vibrations in the AlO6 octahedra. Optical absorption spectra recorded in the UV/VIS-NIR-MIR range 2000 29000 cm–1 show a dominant absorption band at ∼5000 cm–1 which is caused by spin-allowed electronic d–d transitions in Fe2+ located at the T sites. The blue-grey hue exhibited by the sample is mainly due to spin-forbidden electronic transitions in TFe2+ and to MFe2+ ↔MFe3+ intervalence charge transfer, and the poor saturation of the colour is due to the small concentration of Fe2+ and Fe3+.

Powder X-ray diffraction was used to investigate the solid solution range of the Bi14SrxCa12−xO33 series in the Bi–Sr–Ca–O system. Solid solution forms over the range 1≤x≤7 in Bi14SrxCa12−xO33. Experimental X-ray reference patterns of selected members with x=1, 3, 5, and 7 have been prepared for the powder diffraction file (PDF). These phases are monoclinic, C2/m, with cell parameter a ranging from 21.473(4) to 21.868(4) Å, b from 4.3564(9) to 4.3898(9) Å, c from 12.753(2) to 12.962(2) Å, β from 102.91(2)° to 102.79(1)°, and V from 1162.9(3) to 1213.5(3) Å3, respectively. These parameters increase monotonically as Ca is continuously replaced by the larger Sr.
