The aim of this work was to examine the possibility of using different poultry breeds for meat production in extensive systems, concerning their slaughter traits. Total of 200 birds of two genotypes were used in this trial: fast-growing hybrid Ross 308 and pure breed White Rock. Chicks were raised indoors until the age of 4 weeks and subsequently they were enabled to access the range. The trial lasted for 13 weeks. At the end of the trial, 10 male and 10 female chicks per breed were sacrificed for the evaluation of slaughter traits - dressing percentage, yield and share of carcass parts. It was established that both genotype and sex significantly affected carcass traits while genotype affected production traits. Chickens of the Ross 308 hybrid had higher body weights, better feed conversion ratio and higher mortality rate. Chickens of the Ross 308 hybrid had dressing percentage compared to the White Rock breed, while the male chickens had higher dressing percentage compared to the female ones. Chickens of the Ross 308 hybrid had a significantly larger weight and share of breast meat, whereas those of the White Rock breed had a larger share of drumsticks and thighs. A significant influence of the genotype was determined on the amount of abdominal fat in the carcass. Chickens of the White Rock breed had a significantly lower fat content compared to the Ross 308 hybrid, which essentially makes them the genotype which is more suitable for the extensive fattening longer than 10 weeks.

The response of male broiler chickens to graded amounts of an essential amino acid (methionine) or an amino acid analogue (methionine hydroxy analogue free acid, MHA-FA) was examined in this experiment. The effects of each supplement on food intake, food conversion and the masses of a demand tissue (breast meat) and an indicator of body fat (abdominal fat pad) were measured. Birds grew significantly faster, ate more and had a lower food conversion ratio when there was more DL-methionine or MHA-FA in the diet. After standardising the differences in food intake between treatments, there were still highly significant differences in liveweight between diets. After removing the variation due to treatment differences in body mass, the data showed that adding either DL-methionine or MHA-FA to the diet increased the mass of breast meat and reduced the size of the abdominal fat pad. Exponential equations fitted to the body mass and feed conversion ratio data indicate that, in an equimolar comparison, MHA-FA is 78 and 70% as potent as DL-methionine for growth and feed conversion ratio respectively. Similar equations fitted to the carcass data show that MHA-FA is only 71% as potent as DL-methionine in depositing breast tissue. Increasing amounts of DL-methionine reduced the variability in liveweight and carcass, breast and abdominal fat pad weights. Adding 0.05% MHA-FA reduced variability in these traits compared with the basal ration but higher amounts of MHA-FA had no additional effect.

A study conducted for a period of fifty (50) days to determine the growth performance, carcass and organ weight of growing boars fed graded dietary levels of raw Icacinia manni tuber meal. Four experimental diets were formulated with Icacinia manni (Earth ball) replacing maize at 0, 5, 10 and 15% levels designated as T1(control), T2, T3 and T4, respectively. Forty-eight (48) young boars (Landrace x Large white) each weighed 7.72+ 0.35kg were assigned to the four dietary treatments and replicated three times of four boars each in a completely randomized design. Carcass traits and relative organs weights were evaluated. These traits were; dressed weight, dressing percentage, head, shank, trotter, belly, thick rib chop, rib chop, loin, chump chop, leg fillet end, Leg shank end, liver, lungs, kidney spleen and heart. The results indicated that apart from T4, diets T1, T2 and T3 did not differ significantly (P>0.05) in terms of feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio. This implies that Icacinia manni did not affect growth performance except at 15% level of inclusion Similarly, Pigs fed diets T2 and T3 showed significant (P<0.05) increase in dressed weight, dressing percentage as well as certain primal cuts such as breast, rib chop, loin and chump chop. However, relative organs weight did not differ (P>0.05) across dietary treatments except the lungs in T4 (15%) signifying the non-deleterious effect of raw icacinia manni, at 10%. To attain optimum performance and carcass characteristics in young boars therefore, inclusion of raw Icacinia manni in young boars’ diet at 10 percent is recommended.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of ground oak acorn on growth performance, blood parameters and carcass characteristics. Twenty-four goat kids averaging 16.93 ± 1.25 kg initial bodyweight were randomly assigned to four experimental diets in a completely randomised design for 90 days. The experimental diets consisted of (1) 0% oak acorn (control), (2) 8% oak acorn, (3) 17% oak acorn and (4) 25% oak acorn on a DM basis. The goats were slaughtered after 105 days of feeding and carcass characteristics were measured. DM intake increased linearly in small amounts as the level of acorn in the diet increased (P < 0.004). The results showed that average daily gain, water intake and feed conversion ratio were unaffected by levels of ground oak acorn (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in blood parameters (P > 0.05). Carcass fat depth and abdominal fat weight decreased with increasing ground oak acorn in the diet. Other carcass characteristics were not affected by different levels of ground oak acorn. On the basis of the results of the present study, it may be concluded that ground oak acorn can be used up to 25% in the diets of young goats without any adverse effects on growth performance and carcass characteristics. At this level of acorns, the goats received low concentrations of hydrolysable tannins (11 g/kg DM) in their diet.

To contribute solutions to the problem of animal protein shortage for human consumption in Cameroon, a study was conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm of the University of Dschang- Cameroon to evaluate the effects of inclusion levels of Tithonia diversifolia leaf meal (TDLM) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of rabbits. The leaves were chopped, boiled for 5 minutes, drained, sundried, milled and analysed for proximate composition in the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition. The leaf meal was used to formulate 4 experimental diets containing 0% (control) 15, 20 and 25% of the TDLM, corresponding to T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively. A total of 40 (20 males and 20 females) 2-months-old rabbits, weighing 1000 ± 125g were randomly assigned to the 4 dietary treatments in a 4 x 10 replicates in a completely randomized design. The live weights of the animals were evaluated weekly for 9 weeks. Eight (8) rabbits (4 males and 4 females) per treatment were randomly selected and sacrificed for carcass evaluation. The data collected were then submitted to one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Mean differences were separated using Duncan. The results showed that incorporation of TDLM induced a decrease in daily feed consumption. The least daily feed intake was observed in treatment T3 (109.14g/d) while the highest daily weight gain (24.49g/d) and the least feed conversion ratio (4.61) were also observed in the same treatment T3. However, no significant differences were observed for these parameters (P>0.05) between the treatments although daily weight gain was higher and feed conversion ratio lower in the males as compared to the females. Carcass yield (C.Y.) was higher in the control T1 (52.39%) though comparable (P>0.05) with all the other treatments. Abdominal fat was significantly (P<0.05) lower (1.90%) in the treatment T0 but it was comparable to T3 while it was highest (2.28%) in T2. However, C.Y. was higher in males and abdominal fat was higher in females when sex was considered. The relative weight of the lungs was highest in T1 (0.55%), liver in T2 (2.25%), kidneys in T1 (0.56%) and the heart in treatment T2 (0.25%) though, there were no significant differences (P> 0.05) observed in organs weights. Although there were significant differences between organs of different sexes, no regular pattern was maintained. These all signified nutritional adequacy at all levels of inclusion of TDLM, improving growth performance at the inclusion level of 25%. T. diversifolia leaves boiled for 5 minutes, sundried and milled can therefore be used as an alternative ingredient which when included in the rations of rabbits up to 25%, still compares well with conventional ingredients in growth and carcass performance irrespective of the sex. However, the use of TDLM could significantly reduce the cost of feeding and enhance meat production as it is relatively more abundant as compared to other ingredients.

AbstractDue to its function, the peroxisome proliferative activated receptor-γ, coactivator-1α (PPARGC1A) gene is a candidate in the search for genes that may affect production traits in the pig. The purpose of this study was to screen for new SNPs in exon 8 of the porcine PPARGC1A gene and to test their possible association with production traits. Altogether 736 pigs representing five breeds Polish Landrace, n=242; Polish Large White, n=192; Hampshire, n=27; Duroc, 21; Pietrain, n=12) and synthetic line 990 (n=242) were scanned via SSCP assay. Four SNPs were found; two new ones: C/G (His338Gln) and G/A Thr359Thr), and two previously reported ones: C/A (Arg369Arg) and T/A Cys430Ser). The missense T/A and C/G SNPs demonstrated pronounced interbreed variability in terms of allele frequencies, including the exclusive presence of the C/G substitution in the Hampshire breed. The tested SNPs occurred in five putative haplotypes, and their frequency also differed substantially between breeds. The association of the SNPs with production traits was tested for G/A (Thr359Thr), C/A (Arg369Arg) and T/A (Cys430Ser) substitutions in Polish Large White, Polish Landrace and line 990. The analysis revealed only breed-specific associations. The T/A (Cys430Ser) SNP was related to the feed conversion ratio in the Polish Large White (P=0.02), and the silent G/A and C/A substitutions were respectively associated with abdominal fat in line 990 and backfat thickness in Polish Landrace (P=0.04). The combined effects of the substitutions were estimated as haplotype effects. Three significant contrasts between haplotypes were calculated, but the observed associations were again only breed-specific.

The aim of this research was to measure the effect of diet contained water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), Indigofera (Indigofera sp.), and water spinach (Ipomoea spp.) on the performance and cholesterol of turkey meat. A total of twelve male turkeys 40 weeks old with average body weight of 4798±551.78 g were reared for six weeks. This research used a Completely Randomized Design. The dietary diet treatments were consisted of 38% rice bran, 35% commercial diet, and 27% forages which consisted of E. crassipes (R1), Indigofera sp. (R2), and Ipomea spp. (R3). The variables measured were performance (feed consumption, final body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, percentage of abdominal fat, carcass percentage and breast meat cholesterol levels. The results showed that E.crassipes, Indigofera sp., and Ipomea spp. in turkeys’diet did not affect on feed consumption, final body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, carcass percentage, and percentage of abdominal fat. Cholesterol levels of turkey breast meat in the Indigofera dietary treatment was produced the lowest relative cholesterol levels followed by Ipomoea sp and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipe) dietary treatments.  The average cholesterol level of turkey breast meat ranges from 23- 47 mg 100 g-1.  It was concluded that E.crassipes, Indigofera sp., and Ipomea spp. can be used as an alternative ingredient for adult turkey diet.

Two experiments were designed to study the growth and carcass characteristics and the effects of system of management on the Japanese quail. In the first experiment, 138 birds raised to 8 weeks of were used to study the growth and carcass characteristics of quails. Day old weight averaged 8.67 -0.75y while body weights at 4 and 8 weeks of age were 130.38-21.81g and 175.08€ 21.23g respectively. Feed conversion rate to 8 weeks was 6.42 with each bird consuming 1067.68g feed. No significant sex differences (P>0.05) were observed in the average yield of parts although the males had slightly higher dressed and eviscerated weights and percent wing, back and neck than females. Dressed weight was 93.55% on the average while eviscerated weight was 68.61%. The carcass contained 74.20% moisture, 69.63%CP and 26.5% fat. In the second experiment, 120 birds were used to test the effect of management system (floor vs. cage) on growth and carcass characteristic of the quail. Although floor rearing had a slight advantage over cage rearing in terms of weight gain, feed conversion ratio and carcass yield, the differences were not significant (P>0.05).

An experiment was conducted to compare the productivity and profitability of commercial broiler, cockerel and cross-bred (F1 RIR ? × Fayoumi ?) chicks up to target body weights of 850, 1000 and 1250g. Two hundred sixteen birds of 3 genotypes each of 72 birds having 18 chicks in each replication were considered. Commercial broiler starter diet was fed to experimental birds ad libitum. Similar care and management were provided to birds of all treatment groups. Commercial broilers attained the target weights of 850, 1000 and 1250g at the age of 21, 24 and 28 days respectively whereas cockerels attained weights close to those targets at 56, 63 and 74 days respectively and in the case of cross-breds, the days were 63, 77 and 90 for those target weights respectively. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was best in broilers, followed by cockerels and cross-bred chicks respectively. The highest mortality (8.3%) was found in cross-bred group when reared up to target weight of 1250g. The mortality of broiler was 1.4% and no bird was died in cockerel group. Broiler was most profitable (21.11 Tk/kg live bird) at the target weight of 1250g whereas profit from cockerel varied little (21.78, 21.07 and 21.63 Tk/kg live bird against the target weights of 850, 1000 and 1250g respectively) amoung target weights. Therefore, appropriate weight to market these birds was at 850g to minimize the risk of diseases and other management works. Marketing of cross-bred chicks was most profitable (8.43 Tk/kg live bird) at 850g target weight and loss was incurred when rearing was continued up to 1250g. On the basis of results of productivity, it was concluded that commercial broiler, cockerel and cross-bred chicks could be reared upto 28, 56 and 63 days respectively to reach target weights close to 1250, 850 and 850g respectively to obtain maximum profit.?
