Samples of stinging nettle or common nettle (Urtica dioica L.) were collected from the area of Banja Luka. To measure and evaluate the content of chlorophyll (a and b), carotenoids, and soluble proteins, as well as peroxidase activity (POD, EC 1.11.1.7.), fresh nettle leaves of different developmental stages were used. Dried nettle leaves were used to obtain ethanol extract. The dry residue of ethanol extract was dissolved in methanol and the obtained solution was used to determine the content of total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols, as well as non-enzymatic antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity. The non-enzymatic antioxidant activity was determined by different methods: FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS. The results were compared to those of standard substances like vitamin C, BHT, and BHA. Antimicrobial activity was screened by using macrodilution method. The obtained results showed insignificantly higher content of chlorophyll, carotenoids, and proteins in young nettle leaves as well as an increase in the soluble peroxidase activities. Native electrophoresis of the soluble fraction showed the presence of two peroxidase isophorms in the soluble protein fraction of nettle leaves. The total phenolic content in nettle extracts amounted to 208.37 mg GAE/gdw, the content of total flavonoids was 20.29 mg QE/gdw, and the content of total flavonols was 22.83 mg QE/gdw. The antioxidant activity determined by FRAP method was 7.50 mM Fe(II)/gdw, whereas the antioxidant activity measured by using DPPH and ABTS methods, with IC50 values, were 31.38 and 23.55 ?g mL-1, respectively. These results showed the weak and moderate antioxidant capacity of stinging nettle. Extract of Urtica dioica L. was tested for antibacterial acivity against various Grampositive and Gram-negative bacteria: Bacillus subtilis IP 5832, Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (Lp299v), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli isolated from food and Escherichia coli isolated from urine samples. Ampicillin, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin were used as positive control. The results showed that minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extract ranged from 9.05 to more than 149.93 mg mL-1.

<p align="justify">Studi ini meneliti ekstraksi kulit buah matoa (Pometia pinnata), buah dari famili Sapindaceae. Ekstraksi dilakukan dengan teknik maserasi menggunakan 3 pelarut: aseton, etanol dan akuades. Ekstrak tersebut kemudian dievaluasi aktivitas antioksidan dan antimikrobanya. Tes antimikroba menggunakan tes difusi lempeng dan difusi cairan. Aktivitas antioksidan tertinggi dihasilkan oleh ekstrak aseton dengan nilai IC50 15.323 ppm, kemudian ekstrak etanol 143.23 ppm dan 451.306 ppm. Aktivitas antioksidan dari ketiga ekstrak tersebut dibandingkan dengan aktivitas antioksidan dari asam askorbat dan ekstrak aseton menunjukkan kekuatan antioksidan setara dengan 50% dari kekuatan antioksidan dari asam askorbat. Aktivitas anti mikroba dievaluasi terhadap Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus dan Staphylococcus aureus. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa semua ekstrak memiliki aktivitas antimikroba dengan karakter bakteriostatis. Karena itu nilai NIC (Non-inhibitory Concentration) ditetapkan untuk semua ekstrak. Aktivitas tertinggi ditunjukkan oleh ekstrak aseton dan etanol dengan NIC &lt;0.5 ppm terhadapsemua bakteri tes, sementara aktivitas terlemah ditunjukkan oleh ekstrak akuades dengan NIC 5 ppm. Pengukuran kadar fenolik dari semua ekstrak dilakukan dengan tes Folin-Ciocalteau, dan ditemukan adanya korelasi positif antara kadar fenolik dan aktivitas antioksidan dari semua ekstrak. Analisa komponen dengan tes tannin, saponin dan spektrometri juga dilakukan dan hasil menunjukkan adanya kandungan tannin, saponin dan alkaloid di dalam kulit buah matoa.</p><p><strong>Kata kunci :</strong>Matoa, Pometia pinnata, Ekstraksi, Antimikroba, Antioksidan</p><hr /><p align="center"><strong>English Version Abstract</strong></p><p align="justify">This study investigated the extraction of matoa (Pometia pinnata) fruit peels, a fruit in the family of Sapindaceae. The extraction was performed through maceration method using three kinds of solvent: acetone, ethanol and water. The extracts were tested for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. DPPH radical scavenging assay was used in evaluating the antioxidant activities. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using disc-diffusion and broth dilution method. The highest antioxidant activity was showed by acetone crude extract with IC50 value at 15.323 ppm, followed by ethanol and water crude extract at 143.23 ppm and 451.306 ppm, respectively. The antioxidant activities of the crude extracts were compared to L-ascorbic acid and it was found that acetone crude extract exhibited half the strength of the antioxidant activity of L-ascorbic acid. Antimicrobial activity of matoa fruit peel extracts were tested against Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that all crude extracts showed antimicrobial activity with bacteriostatic characteristic. Therefore, Non-Inhibitory Concentration (NIC) was determined for all crude extracts. Acetone and ethanol crude extract possessed the strongest antimicrobial activity at NIC &lt;0.5 ppm against all tested microorganisms, while water crude extract showed the weakest antimicrobial activity with NIC at 5 ppm. The total phenolic content of the crude extracts were measured using Folin-Ciocalteau method. Positive correlation between the antioxidant activities and the total phenolic content of the crude extracts was detected. Saponin and tannin test, as well as spectrometric analyses supported the presence of saponin, tannin and alkaloid in matoa fruit peel.</p><p><strong>Keywords :</strong>Matoa, Pometiapinnata, Extraction, Antimicrobial, Antioxidant</p>

<p>The paper studies antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of <em>Tanacetum balsamita</em> L. from the family Asteraceae, tribus Anthemideae, the plant being medicinally and pharmaceutically promising. Antimicrobial properties of <em>Tanacetum balsamita</em> were studied on test-cultures, collected from the Ukrainian Collection of Microorganisms (UCM, Institute of microbiology and virology SAS Ukraine), the test-cultures being of <em>Escherichia coli </em>(coliform bacillius) UCM B-906 (ATCC 25922); <em>Staphilococcus aureus</em> (golden staphylococcus) UCM B-904 (ATCC 25923); <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em> (blue pus bacillus) UCM B-900 (ATCC 9027); <em>Candida albicans</em> UCM Y-1918 (ATCC 885-653). The above microorganisms are test strains used to determine antimicrobial properties of medicines. The antimicrobial effect of the investigated substances was studied by the method of successive dilutions which determines minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). The extract has demonstrated selective antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria strains of <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. In comparison with the solvent, MIC and MBC values showed an 8-times increase. <em>T.</em><em> </em><em>balsamita</em> extract revealed no bacteriostatic, bacteriocidal/fugicidal effect against gram-negative bacteria stains of <em>Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa</em> and fungus <em>C. albicans</em>. The antimicrobial activity of the extract against <em>S. aureus</em> may be attributed to the presence of essential oil and phenolic compounds. The major compounds in the essential oil are epoxylynaloolacetate (60.13 %) and b-thujone (29.7 %). The following phenolic compounds have been determined with the high-performance liquid chromatography method: flavonoids – luteolin, apigenin, diosmetin, acacetin, apigenin-7-bioside, acacetin-7-bioside, apigenin-7-glycoside, luteolin-7-glycoside, diosmetin-7-bioside, diosmetin-7-glycoside, diosmetin-7-rhamnoside, and hydroxycinnamic acids – n-coumaric, caffeic, chlorogenic, isochlorogenic. The dominant compound is isochlorogenic acid (35 % of the total phenolic compounds detected). The experimental data obtained gives evidence that further research and application of <em>T. balsamita</em> is promising for creation of new anti-staphylococcus drugs.</p>

In this study, the polyphenol content and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of hydroethanolic (MVE) and hydroacetonic (MVA) leaf extracts of Marrubium vulgare L. were examined. The results indicated that the total phenolic content was higher in MVA (112.09 ± 4.77 mg GAE/DW) compared to MVE extract (98.77 ± 1.68 mg GAE/DW). The total flavonoid content was also higher in MVA extract (21.08 ± 0.38 mg QE/g DW) compared to MVE (17.65 ± 0.73 mg QE/g DW). Analysis of the chemical composition revealed the presence of 13 compounds with a total of 96.14%, with the major compound being malic acid (22.57%). Both extracts possess a good total antioxidant activity. DPPH and FRAP assays indicated that the MVE extract possesses a better antioxidant activity, with IC50 = 52.04 µg/mL ± 0.2 and EC50 of 4.51 ± 0.5 mg/mL, compared to MVA extract (IC50 = 60.57 ± 0.6 µg/mL and EC50 of 6.43 ± 0.0411 mg/mL). Moreover, both extracts exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against certain nosocomial strains as indicted by the MIC values, which ranged between 0.93 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL. Taken together, these results reveal the importance of M. vulgare as a natural antioxidant with important antimicrobial activity.

Abstract. This research aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of Petiveria alliacea stem (EEPS) against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined by perforation and broth micro dilution methods. Study on the mechanism of action of EEPS was conducted by molecular docking and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results showed that EEPS had an inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans with MIC values of 256, 128, 256, 512 µg/ml, consecutively. These values are included in to the medium category. Through the process of molecular docking, the best interaction was observed between S-benzyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide with penicillin-binding protein receptor of Pseudomonas aeruginosa characterized by free energy change (ΔG) of 4.32 kcal/mol, and the Ki value of 682.16 μM. Four folds of MIC of the EEPS caused changes in the morphology of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. EEPS possessed antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans.   Keywords: Antimicrobial Activity, Molecular Docking, Petiveria alliacea, SEM.

A chemical investigation of the whole plant of Selaginella wightii was undertaken and the extracts of Selaginella wightii were screened for antioxidant and antimicrobial activities . The antioxidant activity by DPPH method was higher in ethanol extract and diethyl ether extract. In β-carotene-Linoleic acid assay, ethanol extract and diethyl ether extract showed good inhibition zone exhibiting significant antioxidant activity. The various extracts were then examined for antimicrobial activity by using the standard well-diffusion method. The diethyl ether extracts, ethanol, and aqueous extracts showed higher levels of antimicrobial activity than the other extracts. All the extracts also showed good anticandidal activity. The extracts were found to be rich in flavonoids and three compounds were identified. Our study indicates the potential use of Selaginella wightii extracts for treating antimicrobial or fungal infections.

In the field of nanotechnology, the utilization of nanoparticle (NP) synthesis is of great interest to researchers. Numerous attempts have been made for the green synthesis of silver NPs using plant extracts and some methods have successfully accomplished this. This research focuses on using an eco-friendly method for the green synthesis of silver NPs using six cultivars of Phoenix dactylifera fruit extract and determining their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. These NPs were then characterized by their optical property using ultraviolet-visible spectral analysis. The surface plasmon resonance for these synthesized NPs was observed at 420[Formula: see text]nm in the ultraviolet-visible spectra. These NPs were subjected to total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total phenolic content (TPC), 2,2’-azino-bis3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power for evaluating their antioxidant properties and compared with the results of water extracts of the fruit. The antimicrobial activity was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Overall, NPs exhibited good-to-moderate antioxidant activity and strong antimicrobial activity. The TAC and TPC of NPs were found to be lower, but TFC was relatively high compared with water extracts. The ferric reducing ability of NPs varied according to the date cultivar and was higher than water extracts in only some date varieties. On studying the antimicrobial activity, NPs showed greater bacterial inhibition than water extracts, and Staphylococcus aureus was more potent than Escherichia coli. The overall findings highlight the potential use of green synthesis of silver NPs for antioxidant activity and particularly antimicrobial activity and may be beneficial for biomedical and pharmaceutical purposes.

The effect of chemical extraction and in vitro digestion of different kinds of honey on bioactive compounds (total phenolic compounds and flavonoids) and biological activities (antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory) was investigated. The antioxidant activity was evaluated against three radicals (ABTS•+, ROO•, •OH), and the antimicrobial activity was studied against five bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomona aeruginosa) and one yeast (Candida albicans). The results show that in comparison with raw honeys, the methanolic extracts exhibited lower values for phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity and higher anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities against L. monocytogenes. The higher anti-inflammatory activity indicates a possible use of dried honey extracts in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. The digested honeys showed higher total phenolics and higher antioxidant activity than the pre-digested honeys, as well as higher antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and L. monocytogenes, which underlines the possible antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of honey in the human body after the digestion process.

The purpose of this study was a comprehensive examination of the phenolic profile, the vitamin C content, and the antioxidant, anti-acetylcholinesterase, cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities of extracts and jams of fruits of two edible Sorbus species: well characterized S. aucuparia and two insufficiently explored forms of S. torminalis (torminalis and semitorminalis). Characterisation of 44 phenolics was realized using LC?MS/MS and 15 compounds were confirmed, with chlorogenic acid being the most dominant in S. aucuparia and ferulic acid in both S. torminalis forms. S. aucuparia demonstrated potent antioxidant activity, while that of both S. torminalis forms was moderate. Jam extracts had the highest content of vitamin C. S. aucuparia exhibited some anti-acetylcholinesterase activity, while S. torminalis f. torminalis showed the best antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and both forms (torminalis and semitorminalis) possessed the highest activity against Escherichia. coli. The results obtained herein are a great base for further research of edible Sorbus species with the aim of promoting their better usage as nutraceuticals.

AbstractSample particle size is an important parameter in the solid–liquid extraction system of natural products for obtaining their bioactive compounds. This study evaluates the effect of sample particle size on the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of brown macroalgae Sargassum cristaefolium. The crude ethanol extract was extracted from dried powders of S.cristeafolium with various particle sizes (> 4000 µm, > 250 µm, > 125 µm, > 45 µm, and < 45 µm). The ethanolic extracts of S.cristaefolium were analysed for Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFC), phenolic compound concentration and antioxidant activities. The extract yield and phytochemical composition were more abundant in smaller particle sizes. Furthermore, the TPC (14.19 ± 2.08 mg GAE/g extract to 43.27 ± 2.56 mg GAE/g extract) and TFC (9.6 ± 1.8 mg QE/g extract to 70.27 ± 3.59 mg QE/g extract) values also significantly increased as particle sizes decreased. In addition, phenolic compounds epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC), and Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) concentration were frequently increased in samples of smaller particle sizes based on two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison analysis. These results correlate with the significantly stronger antioxidant activity in samples with smaller particle sizes. The smallest particle size (< 45 µm) demonstrated the strongest antioxidant activity based on DPPH, ABTS, hydroxyl assay and FRAP. In addition, ramp function graph evaluates the desired particle size for maximum phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity is 44 µm. In conclusion, current results show the importance of particle size reduction of macroalgae samples to increase the effectivity of its biological activity.

Objective: Investigation, the series of newer 2‐amino-pyridine‐3‐carbonitrile and 2‐amino-4H-pyran‐3‐carbonitrile derivative were synthesized and evaluated antimicrobial activities and antioxidant activity. Methods: Novel synthesized chalcones were further condensation to give 2-amino-3-cyanopyridine and 2-amino-3-cyanopyrans in the presence of malononitrile, pyridine, and ammonia acetate. The product is characterized by conventional and instrumental methods. Pyridine and 4-H-Pyran and their analogs occupy prime position due to their diverse applications. Results: The compounds A3C and B3C exhibited marked zone of inhibition with 30.02±0.02 mm and 29.06±0.01 mm, respectively. Docking studies suggested possible interactions with dihydrofolic reductase 4 with 9.15 and −9.67 kcal/mol, respectively. The IC50 30.28±0.01 exhibited A3C by 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl methods which is better among the series. The 2-amino-3-cyanopyridine derivatives were found good activity than 2-amino-3-cyanopyrane derivative. Among all synthesized compounds few having potent activity and some are near to the standard. Conclusion: Antimicrobial activity and antioxidant of the newly synthesized pyrans and pyridines derivatives will definitely inspire future researchers for the preparation of new analogs.
