<p>The paper studies antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of <em>Tanacetum balsamita</em> L. from the family Asteraceae, tribus Anthemideae, the plant being medicinally and pharmaceutically promising. Antimicrobial properties of <em>Tanacetum balsamita</em> were studied on test-cultures, collected from the Ukrainian Collection of Microorganisms (UCM, Institute of microbiology and virology SAS Ukraine), the test-cultures being of <em>Escherichia coli </em>(coliform bacillius) UCM B-906 (ATCC 25922); <em>Staphilococcus aureus</em> (golden staphylococcus) UCM B-904 (ATCC 25923); <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em> (blue pus bacillus) UCM B-900 (ATCC 9027); <em>Candida albicans</em> UCM Y-1918 (ATCC 885-653). The above microorganisms are test strains used to determine antimicrobial properties of medicines. The antimicrobial effect of the investigated substances was studied by the method of successive dilutions which determines minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). The extract has demonstrated selective antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria strains of <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. In comparison with the solvent, MIC and MBC values showed an 8-times increase. <em>T.</em><em> </em><em>balsamita</em> extract revealed no bacteriostatic, bacteriocidal/fugicidal effect against gram-negative bacteria stains of <em>Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa</em> and fungus <em>C. albicans</em>. The antimicrobial activity of the extract against <em>S. aureus</em> may be attributed to the presence of essential oil and phenolic compounds. The major compounds in the essential oil are epoxylynaloolacetate (60.13 %) and b-thujone (29.7 %). The following phenolic compounds have been determined with the high-performance liquid chromatography method: flavonoids – luteolin, apigenin, diosmetin, acacetin, apigenin-7-bioside, acacetin-7-bioside, apigenin-7-glycoside, luteolin-7-glycoside, diosmetin-7-bioside, diosmetin-7-glycoside, diosmetin-7-rhamnoside, and hydroxycinnamic acids – n-coumaric, caffeic, chlorogenic, isochlorogenic. The dominant compound is isochlorogenic acid (35 % of the total phenolic compounds detected). The experimental data obtained gives evidence that further research and application of <em>T. balsamita</em> is promising for creation of new anti-staphylococcus drugs.</p>

This study was undertaken to determine the antioxidant and antimicrobial effect of essential oil and extracts of Echinophora sibthorpiana Guss. (fam. Apiaceae) collected in Macedonia. The chemical composition of E. sibthorpiana essential oil was characterized by the presence of methyl eugenol (60.40%), p-cymene (11.18%) and ?-phellandrene (10.23%). The free radical scavenging activity of extracts and essential oil was evaluated by DPPH and ABTS assays. The aqueous extract of aerial parts exhibited the strongest scavenging activity (IC50=1.67 mg/ml); results of the ABTS test showed that the most effective was the ethanol extract of aerial parts (1.11 mg vit. C/g). The essential oil showed stronger antioxidant activity compared to hydroxyanisole, ascorbic acid and quercetin that were used in the DPPH and ABTS tests, respectively. The total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations in the extracts ranged between 38.65-60.72 mg GA/g, and 3.15-19.00 mg Qu/g, respectively. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts and essential oil were investigated using a micro-well dilution technique against human pathogenic strains. The results were comparable with the effects of the positive controls, streptomycin and fluconazole. These findings indicate that E. sibthorpiana extracts and oil can be used in preventive treatments and as an alternative for synthetic preservatives.

Here presented a quick and easy synthesis of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). Pistachio hull extract has been used as a reducing and stabilizing agent in the preparation of CuNPs. This biosynthesis is a kind of supporter of the environment because chemical agents were not used to making nanoparticles, and on the other hand, it prevents the release of pistachio waste in nature and its adverse effects on nature. The biosynthesized CuNPs and CuNPs/silver Schiff base nanocomposite (CSS NC) were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). CuNP and CSS NC antimicrobial activity was examined by both well diffusion and determination MIC methods against four bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and two fungi Aspergillus Niger and Candida albicans. CuNPs and CSS NC showed significant antimicrobial activity on the samples, preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi at very low concentrations. CuNPs and CSS NC had the greatest effect on Escherichia coli bacteria and Aspergillus niger fungi. Phenolic compounds are one of the most important antioxidants that are involved in various fields, including pharmacy. Pistacia vera hull is a rich source of phenolic compounds. In this study, the most phenolic compound in Pistacia vera hull is gallic acid and rutin, which has been identified by HPLC analysis. In this study, Pistacia vera hull essential oil analysis was performed by the GC-MS method, in which α-pinene, D-limonene, and isobornyl acetate compounds constitute the highest percentage of Pistacia vera hull essential oil.

<p> Antimicrobial properties of <em>Serratula coronata </em>L<em>., </em>introduced in Zhytomyr Polissya, were studied against test cultures of <em>Escherichia coli</em> (coliform bacillus) UCM B-906 (ATCC 25922), <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>(golden staphylococcus) UCM B-904 (ATCC 25923), <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em> (blue pus bacillus) UCM B-900 (ATCC9027), <em>Candida albicans</em> UCM Y-(ATCC 885-653).</p><p><em>Serratula coronata </em>L.<em> </em>40 % ethanol extract showed potent antimicrobial effect against gram-positive bacteria <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. Compared with the solvent, MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimal bactericidal concentration) increased 32 and 8 times, respectively. The other microorganisms’ cultures demonstrated much lower sensitivity. The study revealed less significant effect of the extract against <em>Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, </em>and it failed to display any bactericidal/fungicidal effect against gram-negative strains of <em>Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa </em>and fungus <em>Candida albicans.</em>The data obtained experimentally show that further study of <em>Serratula coronata </em>L<em>. </em>and its application as the basis for new pharmaceutical anti-staphylococcus preparations may be considered promising and having a great potential.</p>

The quality and the variability of the chemical composition and antimicrobial properties of essentials oils isolated from Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) leaves, which were studied from two different regions that are ecologically various. The average yield of essential oil is 0,56 % for the Ras Elma Tazekka region (mountain) and 0,36% for the Debdou region (plain). An analysis made by GC and GC/ MS identified 22 components in Tetraclinis articulata leaves essential oil in the mountain area and 29 components in the plain area. These major components represent the variability of quantity. The percentages following respectively by the two areas are: Bornyl acetate (34,84%; 32,55%), α-Pinene (11,41%; 18,83%), Camphor (11,24 %; 11,31%), Limonene (11,94 %; 8%) and Borneol (8,35%; 7,79%). The antimicrobial activity of T. articulata essential oil was tested against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli which has been inhibited from the 50μg / mL concentration for the Debdou region (Plain) and 25μg / mL for that of the Ras Elma Tazekka region (Mountain).

<p> </p><p>The paper relates to study of biological activity of 40% ethanol extracts of <em>Dracocephalum moldavica,</em> <em>Hyssopus officinalis</em>, <em>Satureja hortensis</em>, <em>Lophanthus anisatus</em> and <em>Monarda diduma</em>, grown in Ukrainian Polissya, against a pathogenic agent <em>Escherichia coli</em> UCM – B (ATCC 25922).</p><p>The research proves that ethanol extracts of <em>H. officinalis</em>, <em>D. moldavica, S. hortensis, L. anisatus</em> exert antimicrobial activity as the extracted substances provided a twofold increase in minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values against <em>E. coli. </em>Likewise, a twofold increase was observed in minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of <em>L. anisatus</em> ethanol extracts. As to <em>M. diduma </em>ethanol extracts, their inhibitory and bactericidal influence on <em>E. coli</em> was not registered.</p><p>Oil-bearing plants (family <em>Lamiaceae), </em>grown in Zhytomyr Polissya, are characterized by antimicrobial properties, attributed to biologically active substances that are formed and accumulated in the plant material. The main components of hyssop essential oil are isopinocamphone (44.43%), pinocamphone (35.49%), myrtenol (5.26 %), germacrene D (3.15 %), pulegone (2.93 %), bicyclogermacrene (1.35 %). In mint anise essential oil prevailed pulegone (59.19%), izomenton (14.34%), bicyclogermacrene (3,21 %), <em>β</em>-kariofilen (2,99 %), menton (2.21 %), 1,6-germacradien-5-ol (1.5 %), isopulegone (1.4 %), in summer savory – carvacrol (89.07%), g-terpinene (3.53%), <em>α</em>-thujone (1.7 %), camphor (1.48 %). The dominant components of moldavian dragonhead essential oil were geranial (26.19%) and neral (22.36%), 2-(1-hydroxy-1-isopropyl)-cyklopentanon (8.29 % ), 2,3-dehydro-1,8-cineole (6.87 %), 3-(1-hydroxy-1-isopropyl) cyklopentanon (6,51 %), nerol (4.74 %), 3-methyl-2-cyclohexane 1-on (2.13 %).<em></em></p><p>The paper draws attention to further more detailed study of ethanol extracts of hyssop, moldavian dragonhead, summer savory, mint anise with the aim of producing antibacterial herbal preparations.</p>

Samples of stinging nettle or common nettle (Urtica dioica L.) were collected from the area of Banja Luka. To measure and evaluate the content of chlorophyll (a and b), carotenoids, and soluble proteins, as well as peroxidase activity (POD, EC 1.11.1.7.), fresh nettle leaves of different developmental stages were used. Dried nettle leaves were used to obtain ethanol extract. The dry residue of ethanol extract was dissolved in methanol and the obtained solution was used to determine the content of total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols, as well as non-enzymatic antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity. The non-enzymatic antioxidant activity was determined by different methods: FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS. The results were compared to those of standard substances like vitamin C, BHT, and BHA. Antimicrobial activity was screened by using macrodilution method. The obtained results showed insignificantly higher content of chlorophyll, carotenoids, and proteins in young nettle leaves as well as an increase in the soluble peroxidase activities. Native electrophoresis of the soluble fraction showed the presence of two peroxidase isophorms in the soluble protein fraction of nettle leaves. The total phenolic content in nettle extracts amounted to 208.37 mg GAE/gdw, the content of total flavonoids was 20.29 mg QE/gdw, and the content of total flavonols was 22.83 mg QE/gdw. The antioxidant activity determined by FRAP method was 7.50 mM Fe(II)/gdw, whereas the antioxidant activity measured by using DPPH and ABTS methods, with IC50 values, were 31.38 and 23.55 ?g mL-1, respectively. These results showed the weak and moderate antioxidant capacity of stinging nettle. Extract of Urtica dioica L. was tested for antibacterial acivity against various Grampositive and Gram-negative bacteria: Bacillus subtilis IP 5832, Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (Lp299v), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli isolated from food and Escherichia coli isolated from urine samples. Ampicillin, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin were used as positive control. The results showed that minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extract ranged from 9.05 to more than 149.93 mg mL-1.

Crab apple (Malus baccata (L.) Borkh.) was mainly distributed in Europe as an ornamental plant, but the nutritional properties of its edible fruits were not fully revealed. The aim of the current study was to characterize the phytochemical composition of ripen carb apple fruits and to evaluate their nutritional and antioxidant potentials. The fruits were assayed for moisture and ash content, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, titratable acidity (TA), pH, total phenolic compounds and natural pigments. Among the analyzed carbohydrates cellulose was found in the highest content (6% dw), followed by sugars (sucrose, glucose and fructose) and 1.8 % dw uronic acids. The total chlorophylls and carotenoids contents in their fruits were 6.51 and 4.80 μg/g fw, respectively. Total monomeric anthocyanins were not detected. The highest content of total phenolic compounds (2.67 mg GAE/g fw) was found in 95 % ethanol extract from fruits, while the total flavonoids were relatively low – 0.1 mg QE/g fw. DPPH assay (17.27 mM TE/g fw) and FRAP assay (14.34 mM TE/g fw) demonstrated in vitro antioxidant activities of crabapple. Malus baccata fruits were evaluated as a rich source of dietary fibers and phenolic compounds with significant antioxidant potential that could be used in human nutrition.

In this study, the essential oil of Origanum vulgare was evaluated for putative antibacterial activity against six clinical strains and five reference strains of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, in comparison with some antimicrobials. The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed, using chromatography (CG) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry coupled (CG–MS). The major compounds in the oil were Carvacrol (32.36%), α-terpineol (16.70%), p-cymene (16.24%), and Thymol (12.05%). The antimicrobial activity was determined by an agar well diffusion test. A broth microdilution method was used to study the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) was also determined. The cytotoxicity of the essential oil (IC50) was <125 µg/mL for THP-1 cells, which was high in comparison with different MIC values for the A. actinomycetemcomitans strains. O. vulgare essential oil did not interfere with the neutralizing capacity of Psidium guajava against the A. actinomycetemcomitans leukotoxin. In addition, it was shown that the O. vulgare EO had an antibacterial effect against A. actinomycetemcomitans on a similar level as some tested antimicrobials. In view of these findings, we suggest that O.vulgare EO may be used as an adjuvant for prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases associated to A. actinomycetemcomitans. In addition, it can be used together with the previously tested leukotoxin neutralizing Psidium guajava.

This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of two methods (agitation and ultra-sound) for extracting phenolic compounds from 15 native plants. Plant species collected in the Dehesa of Extremadura were used. The antioxidant, antihypertensive and antimicrobial activity of the phenolic extracts was investigated. Significantly different results were obtained when comparing the two extraction methods, with the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds found for ultrasound extraction. In addition, the extracts obtained for Cistus albidus, Cistus salviifolius, Rubus ulmifolius and Quercus ilex showed the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds. The antioxidant activity was higher in the extracts of Cistus and Q. ilex obtained by ultrasound, as was the antihypertensive activity. Antimicrobial activity was also higher in the extracts obtained by ultrasound from C. salviifolius and Q. ilex plants against bacteria and from Cistus ladanifer against yeasts. Therefore, it can be concluded that, with the ultrasound extraction of phenolic compounds from C. ladanifer, C. albidus and Q. ilex plants, it is possible to obtain extracts with important functional properties, so they could be studied for their use in food with the aim of obtaining healthy and safe products, favouring the sustainability of the environment of the Dehesa Extremeña.
