Ad hoc collections of spiders were made in August and early September 2003 and pitfall trap collections were conducted from June to October in 2004 and 2005 in southern Labrador. These collections represent the first systematic spider sampling for the most easterly area of mainland Canada. In total, 161 species in 15 families were identified to genus and species and 16 were indeterminate. Of the identified species, 89 were new records for Labrador and, of those, 16 species were new records for the province. In total, 94 species (58.4%) have Nearctic distributions and 67 species (41.6%) are Holarctic. No Palearctic species were found. Our study brings the number of spider species recorded in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to 377 (213 in Labrador).

The construction of China’s free trade zones (FTZs) has levered the evolution of the arbitration regime in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Under the FTZ template, breakthroughs in arbitration have been made in regulations, FTZ arbitration rules, arbitral proceedings and judicial practice. The development of FTZ arbitration mechanism is highlighted with the introduction of new concepts, such as ad hoc arbitration consolidation of arbitration joinder of third parties and model cases, and with the updated or expanded interpretation of the existing concepts, such as permission for the offshore arbitration for WFOEs and FIEs interim measures arbitration in combination with mediation, and the open panel of arbitrators. Regardless of the progress, many issues related to the FTZ arbitration need to be clarified, among which is the amendment of the PRC Arbitration Law and keeping it in line with the mainstream international arbitration, constitute probably the most effective way to promote and guarantee the arbitration evolution.

The main goal of the study is to analyze the link between Grit and Life Attitude, and its relation with the permanence and academic performance of students from the National Defense University. This paper is mainly focused in the link between the first two constructs. Grit is defined as the passion and constancy to achieving goals, to resisting with effort and interest towards the challenges and difficulties, which is a leader’s attribute (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews y Kelly, 2007). Life Attitude based on the existential belief that life has a purpose, that persons draw meaning from a variety of sources: recreational and creative activities, personal relationships, achievements (Reker - Woo, 2011). A non-probabilistic sample was formed, for convenience, of 162 students; a sociodemographic questionnaire designed ad hoc; the Scale of Determination (Grit Scale) (Duckworth et al., 2007), which is in the process of validation (Tortul and Daura, in evaluation) and the Life Attitude Test (LAP-R (VE-AA)) in the Spanish adaptation of Barni (2017) were administered. Statistical analysis were made from the collected data, in order to corroborate if there were differences in the variables. The first results showed differences according to career and sociodemographic variables; the undergraduate students obtained higher scores in the positive dimensions of the LAP-R than in other researches made in the same geographical context. The work evidences data of interest in the training of defense professionals, for the decision making in the educational style necessary for an integral formation as a lifelong process.

In this paper, the Rhodomelaceae family intertidal representants are characterized in the coasts of Michoacan. A list of taxonomic characters and a preliminary weight of them are proposed for use in the determination and diagnosis of the species in each genus of the family. The elaboration of a sinoptic key for the genera and species investigated was carried out. An analys is about the distribution of the species through the litoral of Michoacan was made and some of the causes for the presence and absence of them are discussed , considering mainly the habitat where they grow. An emphasis was made in morphologic and anatomic variation between the previous records and our material, and in some cases, a new range of variation is given. . The analyzed flora is composed of fourteen species, distributed in five genus, pointing out six new records for Mexico in its tropical coasts: Polysiphonia confusa, P.scopulorum, Chondria arcuata, C. daswhylla, Laurencia clarionensis y L. hancockii.

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer, is a pest of tobacco in Puerto Rico. This insect is also a vector of virus diseases transmitted from pepper to tobacco and vice-versa. During a survey made in Puerto Rico by the authors, the known host-plant list of this insect was greatly increased by adding around 15 new records.

An extensive study was made on the moss flora of the Bío-Bío Region (VIII Región) in south-central Chile in 2001-2003. Collections were made in all four provinces of the region: Arauco, Bío-Bío, Concepción and Ñuble. Approximately 265 localities in the region were explored with over 6,000 mosses collected in the four provinces. The mosses of this region had not previously been studied to any great extent and with part of the region’s environment being destroyed by the construction of several dams on one of the major rivers, the Bío-Bío, the study of this area seemed of utmost importance. Thus far, a total of 20 taxa were found which are new to Chile, making a total of 877 known for the country, with four new taxa known for South America. An additional 87 taxa are reported new only to the Bío-Bío Region. That number, together with some new records from the recent literature, increases the total for the Region from 190 to 300. It was determined from the 87 new taxa for the Bío-Bío Region that the majority (41) represent northern extensions of taxa, while a much smaller number (10) represent southern extensions. The remainder (36) fill in a gap in the distribution of the taxa between the northern and southern parts of the country. Many difficult species still remain to be identified and the number of species new to science, to Chile and to the Bío-Bío Region, is certain to increase when the remaining specimens are identified.

AbstractThe Palearctic species Amara communis (Panzer) and Bembidion femoratum Sturm were both first reported from North America in 1992. Since that time a sizeable number of additional specimens of both species have been found, which substantially expands their known range on the continent. These records are summarized herein. The possible modes of introduction of both species are discussed within the context of other introduced insects, particularly those first found in Atlantic Canada. In the case of A. communis, the many coastal localities where it occurs would seem to indicate that it was introduced in association with transatlantic marine traffic, possibly the shipment of dry ballast. In the case of B. femoratum, the mode of introduction is less clear. Possible associations with nursery stock, dry ballast, and the movement of aircraft are all discussed.

We provide a list of amphibian and squamate species collected in the Raso da Catarina Ecological Station, Bahia state, Brazil, during two distinct periods. An initial visual inventory of amphibians was conducted monthly from March 2010 to February 2011, using transects in a forest and temporary ponds. The second inventory was conducted over a 30-day period between March and April, 2012, when 37 pitfall trap arrays, each consisting of four buckets and supplementary glue traps, were set in low scrub and forest, complemented by opportunistic searches. A total of 19 lizard species, two amphisbaenians, 21 frogs, and 11 snakes were recorded during the study. New records for the protected area include 10 lizards, one amphisbaenian, 15 amphibians, and 11 snakes (36 species in total). Several species typical of the Atlantic Forest were collected, reflecting the potential influence of this biome, especially in the sampled forest habitats (Mata da Pororoca).

Among other activities, the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) aims to survey the biodiversity of arachnids in protected areas of South Africa. The study presented here documents the diversity of spiders and scorpions collected from the Nylsvley Nature Reserve (NNR), South Africa over a 30-year period. The spider fauna of NNR contains 175 species (7.5% of the total recorded in South Africa), in 131 genera and 37 families. Thomisidae is the most diverse spider family in the reserve, with 33 species (18.9% of the total), followed by Salticidae, with 20 species (11.4%), and Araneidae, with 18 species (10.3%). The majority of species (125) are wandering spiders (71.4%), whereas 50 species (28.6%) build webs. Wandering grounddwelling spiders comprise 52 species, whereas 73 wandering species have been collected from the vegetation. A total of 158 species are new records for the reserve and Oxyopes tuberculatus Lessert, 1915 is newly recorded for South Africa. Six spider species may be new to science. The scorpion fauna of NNR comprises five species (5% of the total recorded in South Africa) in three genera and two families. Buthidae are more diverse in the reserve, with four species and two genera represented. The scorpion fauna of the reserve includes two fossorial and three epigeic species, representing five ecomorphotypes: semi-zpsammophilous, pelophilous, lithophilous, corticolous and lapidicolous. Five additional scorpion species may be recorded if the reserve is sampled more intensively using appropriate techniques.

Numerous collections of ascidians have been made in the Pacific and Indian Oceans but the inventory is far from complete. Each sampling provides new species. Two new didemnids are described here from Palau and Vanuatu. New records are given for 22 additional species with complementary descriptions and underwater photographs. The tropical ascidian fauna is highly diverse and successive new collections show that many of the species are not only widely distributed from the central to western Pacific but also common to the Indian Ocean.

The taxonomy of the genus Microptila Ris in Japan is revised. Microptila orienthula Kjærandsen and Ito, 2009, the only East Palearctic species in the genus, is redescribed with new records and two new species, M. genka sp. nov. and M. nakama sp. nov., are described for adults from Ryukyu Islands, far southern Japan, in the Oriental region.
