The Function of Linguistic Structures in Shaping Adonis's Vision of the World: The Siege as an Applied Model We chose the poet Adonis for a reason: he is a problematic poet, critic and thinker, who came out of the "heart of heritage" and from among the mainstays of modernity. It is not possible to study all of his work in one project. Therefore, his book The Siege, as he calls it, appears as a landmark in which he intensifies many forms of structures: the lexicon, syntactic, morphological, grammatical and symbolical structures, which all seem to interconnect amongst each other. We have overlooked the musical structure for it seems a bit not connected to our study. We have studied the question of interpretation and understanding through the constitutive relations of the semantic structures, and the cultural structure has been looked at in each of these structures, in which Adonis appeared as a critic of heritage and a historian of modernity and of new language. Indeed Adonis showed a unique proficiency in language skills: letters, vocabulary and beautiful patterns. He was also very skillful in their investment, and he harnessed all the diverging forms in the ways he sees the world emanating from the heritage and its infusion into the present and its problems. We have also been aware of the ways in which Adonis employed metaphor and symbol to revolutionize the fossilized stereotype, for the deep-rooted metaphor has its own distinguished and effective way of achieving its project.

Abstract The World Wide Web has often been considered too vast to be consulted for linguistic purposes or for language learning. This paper will explore whether second language learners can be taught how to navigate the web (i.e., how to perform Google linguistic research, or “Googleology”), in order to improve their language skills. To this aim, a 2 h trial lesson was organized. The trial lesson was delivered to 78 apprentices, divided into groups of 10–15, over a period of six months. During the lesson, the participants were taught how to work with Google Advanced Search syntax. At the end of the lesson, they applied the newly-acquired skills by completing a few tasks concerning term and/or collocational search. The paper findings will highlight that, despite initial hesitation or inaccuracies in completing the exercises, the tasks were performed well. The participants considered the lesson interesting, useful and enjoyable. They felt engaged irrespective of the level of their second language (L2) knowledge, and were more confident in approaching Google Search for linguistic purposes.

The need for cover is a requirement in all parts of the world. More or less this need has been realized in almost every society. In addition, clothing is one of the basic needs of human beings. This basic need has become a pleasure over time, and the temporary innovation that has entered the life of society with the desire to dress completely or the need for change has turned into an excessive, common indulgence shown by the society for a certain period of time. When we evaluate clothing in terms of nations, it has gained very different meanings with the effect of the cultural structure of the society. This chapter demonstrates how, despite their experience of prejudice, Muslims became involved in a gradual process of integration into mainstream society; in this period they largely thought of themselves as ‘black’ or as Asians, rather than as Muslims. First-generation British Muslims had been fairly relaxed about social behaviour and religious observation. Meanwhile, the second generation of Muslims were not in Britain as temporary economic migrants, and consequently were less passive than their predecessors, more confident and aware of their opportunities and rights in Britain. For them, integration into mainstream society went hand in hand with an increasing assertiveness in the face of prejudice and an awareness of their identity as Anglo-Asians. By the 1980s and 1990s, the younger generation were becoming alienated from their parents due to familiarity with a secular society; many regarded the world of the mosque as boring. Muslims also began to reflect mainstream practice in other ways: more women in their twenties remained unmarried and, with their better language skills and qualifications, they were more likely to be in paid employment.

The increasing number of non-native English speakers in the world has led to the use of varieties of English. Nowadays, the number of speakers of English in the expanding circle has exceeded the number of speakers in the outer and inner circles. This has given rise to the scrutiny of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). With this regard, the research on World Englishes (WEs) has increased over the last few decades. In light of these observations, the purpose of this chapter is to raise awareness of World Englishes (WEs) among preparatory students at private universities in Turkey. Specifically, the study is concerned with mentoring preparatory students through Wes-integrated courses. The participants of this study were 20 preparatory students at A2-level English proficiency. As data collection procedure, the mentor teacher of the existing program adapted EFL materials including videos, dialogues, and integrated four language skills. The data were collected through questionnaires and reflective essays. With regard to the results, the students had an idea about the concept of Wes, and they became aware of the varieties of English to some extent; specifically, they displayed consciousness about the status of English across the world and sympathy toward WEs.

Arabic is a language studied in various parts of the world. Learning Arabic is not an easy one, but it takes hard work from various parties, wether from the teacher or students. Especially if the Arabic language learners are not from native speakers, of course this will be a tough challenge for an Arabic teacher. The existence an Arabic language environment will greatly help learning Arabic for non-native speakers, either in their own learning or in improving language skills. The Arabic environment consists of two types, namely the formal Arabic environment and the non-formal Arabic environment. Each of them play a very important role in learning Arabic, inside or outside the classroom, because everything around the student, whether audio or visual, will greatly influence the success of learning Arabic. So, it is very important for researchers to know about what is the Arabic environment and what is the role in helping Arabic learning for non-native speakers.
