The 15th international conference of the Public Communication of Science and Technology network took place from April 4–6, 2018. Given its location in Dunedin, New Zealand/Ōtepoti, Aotearoa, it was a natural venue for two sessions on communicating science across cultures.

 O presente artigo está relacionado ao Projeto de Pesquisa “Ciência e Performance: estudo da Conferência Internacional sobre Comunicação Pública da Ciência e Tecnologia”. Apresentamos aqui os resultados parciais de um questionário disponibilizado no dia 13 de maio de 2014, logo após a Conferência na Bahia-Brasil, numa lista de discussão da Network for the Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST). O questionário obteve 42 respostas de pesquisadores de diferentes países, com predominância do Brasil, Índia, Estados Unidos e Itália, seguidos da Austrália e da Inglaterra. INFORME DE INVESTI GACION : PROYE CTO DE INVESTI GACIÓN “CIEN CIA Y PERFOR MAN CE: ESTU DIO DE LA CONFEREN CIA INTERNA CIO NAL SOBRE COMUNI CACIÓN PÚBLI CA DE LA CIEN CIA Y LA TE CNO LO GÍA ”Resumen: El presente artículo está relacionado con el Proyecto de Investigación “Ciencia y Performance: estudio de la Conferencia Internacional sobre Comunicación Pública de la Ciencia y la Tecnología”. Abstract The relevance of public relations (PR) efforts of scientific organizations for public communication of science is increasingly recognized. PR departments are not mere mediators between scientists and journalists but represent the stakeholder interests of their organizations in the public sphere and are communicative actors themselves. Previous Taiwanese studies focused on university PR in the educational context, whereas the potential function in the communication of research and scientific knowledge received less attention. This study explores how PR departments of academic organizations in Taiwan view their role in the public communication of science. Insights from eleven semistructured interviews with PR officers suggest that public relations departments of academic organizations in Taiwan only half-heartedly contribute to the communication of science. Another interesting finding is that even in the era of social media science, PR still relies heavily on journalism, which in Taiwan lacks professionalism in the communication of science. We suggest a more active role of academic organizations in the public communication of science, pursuing not only marketing or self-presentation goals, but also assuming genuine responsibility for public information about research and scientific knowledge.

Before the successful convening of the 7th International Conference of the Independent Learning Association (ILA) 2016 at HUST, Associate Professor Du in our School of Foreign Languages of HUST interviewed Kerstin Dofs and Moira Hobbs on November the 4th in the Figaro cafeteria on campus to gain further insight into independent learning. Both Kerstin and Moira come from New Zealand, where Kerstin is currently the Manager of the Language Self Access Centre (LSAC) at Ara Institute of Canterbury in Christchurch and Moira is the Manager of the Language (Self-Access) Learning Centre at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland. They are co-convenors assisting Jianying with arrangements for the ILA Conference at HUST.

We have published this issue of JCOM while the call for papers is open for the twelfth Public Communication of Science and Technology conference. The biennial meeting will be held in April 2012 and for the first time in Italy: the hosting city in Florence. The 2012 edition of the PCST conference is being held after more than twenty years of growth of the network of scholars that founded it and the expansion of its boundaries outside the European context from which it was created. JCOM is a part of this network, made up not only of individuals but also of organisations, university departments, journals, national conferences and so on.
