I applied affective events theory to explore the multilevel influence of destructive leadership on the innovative behavior of millennial generation employees. Participants were 223 employees from 32 work groups at 3 companies in mainland China. Results showed that both actual group destructive leadership and destructive leadership as perceived by the millennial employees, had a negative influence on innovative behavior via the mediation of employees' individual affective responses. In addition, the multilevel negative influence of actual group destructive leadership on the millennial employees' innovative behavior was mediated by group affective tone. In this study, I revealed the multilevel value of affective events in the relationship between destructive leadership and millennial employees' innovative behavior, and offered insight into how to control the negative effects of destructive leaders and inspire innovative behavior in millennial employees.

The study investigates the influence of media stereotypes on the degree of presumed media influence on others and the resulting effects for people’s own attitudes toward a minority. We examine how the presumption of negative effects of media stereotypes on others can lead to a correction of one’s own attitude toward Muslims. In an online experiment, we test the relationship among media stereotyping, presumed media effects, and attitudinal and behavioral consequences. The results show that one’s own attitude toward Muslims is corrected when people presume a negative influence of media stereotypes about Muslims on other people.

African Americans (AAs) are disproportionately affected by cerebrovascular pathology and more likely to suffer from premature cognitive decline. Depression is a risk factor for poorer cognitive functioning, and research is needed to identify factors that serve to mitigate its negative effects. Studies have demonstrated positive influences of spirituality within the AA community. Determining whether spirituality attenuates the effects of depressive symptoms on cognitive functioning and the pathophysiological mechanisms that explain these relationships in AAs is paramount. This study examines the influence of daily spiritual experiences on the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning, and how inflammatory markers may partially explain these associations. A sample of 212 (mean age= 45.6) participants completed the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Trail Making Test A and B (TMT) and Stroop Color and Word Test (Stroop). Blood samples were collected to measure inflammatory mediators (IL-6, IL-1a, TNF-a). Linear regression analyses were used to evaluate associations. Higher BDI-II scores were associated with poorer psychomotor speed and visual scanning, measured by TMT A (B=1.49, P=.01). IL-6 explained a significant amount of variance in this relationship (B=.24, CI 95% [.00, .64]). IL-6 also significantly mediated the relationship between depressive symptoms and psychomotor speed and mental flexibility, measured by TMT B performance (B=.03, CI 95% [.003, .095]). Frequent spiritual experiences among AAs may ameliorate the negative influence of depressive symptoms on cognitive functioning.Ethn Dis. 2019;29(2):267-276; doi:10.18865/ed.29.2.267

From a self-evaluation perspective, we explored the influence of negative workplace gossip on targeted employees’ innovative behavior. We surveyed 296 employees of 19 enterprises. The results of regression analysis showed that negative workplace gossip was negatively related to employees’ innovative behavior, that organization-based self-esteem mediated the relationship between negative workplace gossip and employees’ innovative behavior, and that employees’ creative selfefficacy moderated the relationship between organization-based self-esteem and employees’ innovative behavior, such that the positive relationship was stronger when employees’ creative self-efficacy was higher. Our findings offer insight into the potential harm of gossip in the workplace and contribute to delineating the underlying mechanism and boundary condition of the link between negative workplace gossip and employees’ innovative behavior. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Purpose This paper aims to examine and compare the simultaneous effect of financially successful appeals and attractiveness for male spokespersons, as well as explain why and when this effect happens based on the viewer’s gender. Design/methodology/approach Two studies were designed by manipulating the success (vs absent) and attractiveness (vs average looking) of a male spokesperson and compared his marketing effectiveness in terms of purchase intention and advertising attitude. Additionally, the influence of gender through the mediating effect of negative/positive affect was compared. Findings Participants indicated lower purchase intention and advertising attitude in light of the success appeal in both studies; however, this effect was influenced by attractiveness in case of high involvement product. Additionally, success had a greater effect on ad effectiveness than attractiveness. Only for males, negative affect mediated the relationship between ad effectiveness and exposure to a successful spokesperson. Practical implications Practitioners should be aware of the negative influence of a financially successful spokesperson overall, especially if he is also very attractive and the product is a high involvement one targeting males. On the contrary, attractiveness of a successful spokesperson might cancel out negative effects for those products targeting females. Originality/value This study differs from previous studies by considering the simultaneous effect of successful and/or attractive male spokespersons on adult sample instead of college students and examine the effects for high and low involvement product.

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between exploitative leadership and employee innovative behavior and explore the mediating role of relational attachment and the moderating role of high-performance work systems (HPWSs).Design/methodology/approachThis research collected data from 374 employees and their direct supervisors in 75 teams and tested a cross-level moderated mediation model using multilevel path analysis.FindingsThe results suggest that (1) exploitative leadership has a negative impact on employee innovative behavior; (2) relational attachment mediates the relationship between exploitative leadership and employee innovative behavior; (3) HPWS positively moderates the relationship between exploitative leadership and relational attachment and (4) HPWS moderates the mediating mechanism from exploitative leadership to employee innovative behavior.Practical implicationsThe empirical findings suggest that organizations should make efforts to prevent exploitative leadership. Moreover, managers should pay attention to the important role of relational attachment in promoting employee innovative behavior and realize the role of HPWSs in facilitating the negative effects of exploitative leadership.Originality/valueThis research identifies relational attachment as a key mediator that links exploitative leadership to innovative behavior and reveals the role of HPWSs in strengthening the negative effects of exploitative leadership on employee innovative behavior.

We explored how change leadership affects individual innovative behavior in a crisis context. Using the attentional perspective, we proposed a moderated mediation model in which change leadership affected individual innovative behavior via the mediator of individual alertness and the moderator of perceived supervisor support. We collected data from 247 individuals in 42 companies affected by the 2011 Thailand flooding crisis. Our findings suggest that change leadership has a significant direct and indirect positive effect on individual innovative behavior, and that individual alertness positively mediates this relationship. Perceived supervisor support moderated the relationship between change leadership and individual alertness only when perceived supervisor support was high (vs. low). Thus, we have provided insight into how change leadership can facilitate individual innovative behavior in a crisis context.

According to the Malaysian Ministry of Education's (MOE) national education model, the education system is meant to produce people who are knowledgeable, competent, and able to contribute to the nation's improvement. Educators must demonstrate unique actions to nurture their students seamlessly and systematically, according to the idea. The purpose of this paper is to present an empirical study that looks at the impact of humor and teamwork on teachers' innovative behaviors in Malaysian secondary schools. The goal of this study was to find out how engaged teachers are in innovative behavior (IB) in terms of idea generation (IGEN), idea promotion (IPROM), and idea implementation (IIMPL), as well as to look at the relationship between humor (HUM) and teamwork (TW) and IB (IB). This quantitative study was conducted using a survey of 354 selected respondents. The respondents were selected from 4,319 teachers in two different zones in the state of Selangor by using the stratified random sampling technique. The findings suggest that there is a good level of teachers’ engagement in idea generation, and a moderate level of idea promotion and idea implementation behavior. The findings also reveal that humor and teamwork are positively and significantly correlated to innovative behavior. Overall, this study provides a better insight into how humor and teamwork contribute to teachers’ innovative behavior.

The internet, online games, smartphones are things that are very familiar with the lives of millennials today, including the millennial generation in Japan. Everything that comes with it is a necessity, including the negative effects it causes. In Japan, the society has highlighted many problems arising from the internet, online games, and smartphones, one of which is the addiction problem in using these devices. This brings us to the classic problem of Japanese society, namely, hikikomori, where a person stays at home for long periods, does not socialize and work, and only does what he/she likes. This research will further explore the relationship between online games and the hikikomori phenomenon that developed in Japan.

Echinodermata is a phylum of marine invertebrates which has been extant since Cambrian time (c.a. 500 m.y. before the present). Modern examples of echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars, and sea lilies (crinoids). The endoskeletons of echinoderms are composed of plates or ossicles (Fig. 1) which are with few exceptions, porous, single crystals of high-magnesian calcite. Despite their single crystal nature, fracture surfaces do not exhibit the near-perfect {10.4} cleavage characteristic of inorganic calcite. This paradoxical mix of biogenic and inorganic features has prompted much recent work on echinoderm skeletal crystallography. Furthermore, fossil echinoderm hard parts comprise a volumetrically significant portion of some marine limestones sequences. The ultrastructural and microchemical characterization of modern skeletal material should lend insight into: 1). The nature of the biogenic processes involved, for example, the relationship of Mg heterogeneity to morphological and structural features in modern echinoderm material, and 2). The nature of the diagenetic changes undergone by their ancient, fossilized counterparts. In this study, high resolution TEM (HRTEM), high voltage TEM (HVTEM), and STEM microanalysis are used to characterize tha ultrastructural and microchemical composition of skeletal elements of the modern crinoid Neocrinus blakei.

The article examines the impact of various socio-economic and financial indicators on the resilience of Russian regions. For each region, the integral index of resilience is calculated, and its correlation dependence with the selected indicators is revealed. The study confirms the relationship between fiscal resilience and socio-economic resilience of the regions. The analysis of panel data for 75 regions from 2007 to 2016 shows that there are significant differences in the dynamics of indicators in different periods. In particular, the degree of exposure to the negative effects of the crises of 2008—2009 and 2014—2015 in non-resilient regions is higher than in resilient ones.
