Fibrin sealants derived from human blood can be used in tissue engineering to assist in the repair of bone defects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the support system formed by a xenograft fibrin sealant associated with photobiomodulation therapy of critical defects in rat calvaria. Thirty-six rats were divided into four groups: BC (n = 8), defect filled with blood clot; FSB (n = 10), filled with fibrin sealant and xenograft; BCPBMT (n = 8), blood clot and photobiomodulation; FSBPBMT (n = 10), fibrin sealant, xenograft, and photobiomodulation. The animals were killed after 14 and 42 days. In the histological and microtomographic analysis, new bone formation was observed in all groups, limited to the defect margins, and without complete wound closure. In the FSB group, bone formation increased between periods (4.3 ± 0.46 to 6.01 ± 0.32), yet with lower volume density when compared to the FSBPBMT (5.6 ± 0.45 to 10.64 ± 0.97) group. It was concluded that the support system formed by the xenograft fibrin sealant associated with the photobiomodulation therapy protocol had a positive effect on the bone repair process.

Background: Prolonged air leakage following pneumothorax surgery is a significant issue causing increased hospital stay and morbidity. This study aimed to investigate the cost and efficacy of homologous fibrin sealant in preventing the air leakages. Methods: Among the patients who had undergone bullectomy and subtotal parietal pleurectomy for recurrent primary spontaneous pneumothorax via transaxillary mini thoracotomy between 2010 and 2018, two groups each including 35 cases were conducted as to whether fibrin sealent had been applied. These two patient groups were compared in terms of age, gender, duration of air leakage and cost. Results: Mean age of whole group of patients including 59 males and 11 females was 21.5 years. Mean values of air leakage duration and cost of hospital stay was calculated as 1.94 days and 2777 TL for sealant applied group and 2.97 days and 1200 TL for sealent unapplied group, respectively. The patient groups did not indicate a statistically difference in terms of age and gender whereas duration of air leakage was shorter but cost was higher in the group for whom fibrin sealant had been administered (p<0.001). None of the patients developed mortality but recurrence was present in 4 (5.7%) patients. Conclusions: Although homologous fibrin sealant applied in pneumothorax surgery results in cost increase, it contributes to surgical outcomes by preventing possible additional complications in consideration of shortened duration of air leakage.

This study evaluated the osteogenic capacity of a new fibrin sealant (FS) combined with bone graft and laser irradiation in the bone repair. Defects were created in the skull of 30 rats and filled with autogenous graft and FS derived from snake venom. Immediately after implantation, low-power laser was applied on the surgical site. The animals were divided in: control group with autogenous graft (G1), autogenous graft and laser 5 J/cm2 (G2), autogenous graft and laser 7 J/cm2 (G3), autogenous graft and FS (G4), autogenous graft, FS and laser 5 J/cm2 (G5), autogenous graft, FS and laser 7 J/cm2 (G6). The animals were sacrificed 6 weeks after implant. Results showed absence of inflammatory infiltrate in the bone defect. New bone formation occurred in all groups, but it was most intense in G6. Thus, the FS and laser 7 J/cm2 showed osteoconductive capacity and can be an interesting resource to be applied in surgery of bone reconstruction.
