Background: Metabolic syndrome is a health problem with its prevalence increasing in the worldwide. It is characterized by a group metabolic factor including abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure and insulin resistance. Metabolic syndrome affected by changes in lifestyle and unhealthy dietary patterns with high cholesterol, saturated fatty acid and trans fatty acid.Objective: The study conducted to know relationship between fat consumption with metabolic syndrome among adult people in Denpasar city.Method: The case control study designed was applied. The cases were adult people who had metabolic syndrome, and the control was healthy people from the case-neighboring household. Total subject were 130, taken by consecutive sampling: 65 cases and 65 controls. The subject identity, fat intake, waist circumference, blood pressure and fasting blood sugar were collected. The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to measure fat consumption and blood glucose test meter for measuring fasting blood sugar. Mantel Haenzel statistic analysis were used to test the association of fat intake with metabolic syndrome.Result: The study showed that means of syndrome metabolic component in case higher than control (p<0.05). Waist circumference in case was 97.23 cm, blood pressure was 141.4/93.3 mmHg, fasting blood glucose was 132 mg/dl. There were significant difference between intake fat total, cholesterol, saturated fatty acid (SAFA) and frequency of intake in case and control (p<0.05). Intake fat on cases were fat total 85.5% >25% energy total/day, SAFA 90.8% >10%, cholesterol 55.4% >300 mg/day. Odd Ratio Mantel Haenzel analysis showed that fat consumption (fat total, cholesterol and frequency consumption of fat were risk factor to metabolic syndrome (OR >1)).Conclusion: There was significant relations between fat consumption (fat total cholesterol, SAFA, frequency of fat consumption) with metabolic syndrome among adult people for Denpasar City.

Aerobic and resistance exercise have been prescript to prevention and non pharmacological treatment of hypertension. However, there is a lack of studies investigating the effects of concurrent training in hypertensive women. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of concurrent training program on rest blood pressure, biochemical variables (blood glucose and total cholesterol) , anthropometric (body mass index and waist circumference) and functional fitness in hypertensive women. Eighteen hypertensive postmenopausal and untrained women (59±12 years old) started in the intervention, but only ten subjects finished. The voluntaries were enrolled in concurrent training, 60 min/day, 3 times a week, during 6 months. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol, body mass index, waist circumference and functional fitness (AAPHERD) were measured pre and post experimental period. Data were analyzed using the Student’s t test with significance level set at 5% (P?0.05) and Cohen's Effect Size (ES). The results showed significant improvement in systolic and diastolic blood pressure at rest. The other variables did not show significantly changes, but the ES was medium and large for several variables (body mass index, blood glucose, total cholesterol, agility, coordination, aerobic fitness, strength endurance and general functional fitness index). In conclusion, this study confirms that 6 month of concurrent training program improved systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive women. In addition, the protocol suggests an improvement in anthropometric, biochemical and functional variables related to health.

1068 randomly sampled adult Bangladeshi people were studied during a period of six months from October 2004 to March 2005. It was a randomized, prospective study. Cases that fulfilled two criteria of metabolic syndrome (MetS) were evaluated to see pattern and types of MetS. Out of 1068 patients, 110 (10.3%) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. 101 (9.4%) cases were labeled as metabolic syndrome according to NCEP ATP III criteria, 09 cases had only two criteria. 40 cases were male & 70 cases were female (M:F= 1:1.8). Mean age of patients with was 44.88, ranging from the age of 20-68 years. Majority (55%) of the patients were in the age group of 30-49 years. Half of the cases had BMI 30-34.9. Mean body weight of male was 85.9 kg and of female was 78.2 kg. Mean waist circumference of male was 41.7 inches and of female 40 inches. Mean HDL for male was 38.3 mg/dL and for female is 40.2 mg/dL. Mean Triglyceride for male was 172.1 and for female was 169.3 mg/dL. Mean total cholesterol for male was 216.7 and for female was 207.6 mg/dL. Mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) for men is 162 mm Hg & diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 99 mm Hg and for female mean SBP 155 and DBP 96 mm Hg. Metabolic syndrome is more prevalent in the 3rd and 4th decade of life in both sexes. It is almost twice common in female than male. Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death globally with an incidence of adolescents and young adults in Indonesia as many as 153.705 cases. Central obesity is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease due to increase in fasting blood glucose levels, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and blood pressure. Aims: to determine the correlation between waist circumference and fasting blood glucose levels, triglyceride levels, and blood pressure in young adults. Method: This analytic study with a cross-sectional approach involved 53 young adult subjects (18-25 years old). Waist circumference is measured using a tape measure. Blood sugar and triglyceride levels were measured using Cobas® 6000 analyzer machine from blood samples of subjects after fasting for 8-12 hours. Blood pressure data are obtained by measurement using aneroid sphygmomanometer. Results: In this study, the mean waist circumference of the research subjects was 77,4 cm. No correlation was found between waist circumference and fasting blood sugar levels (p = 0,159). However, a positive correlation was found between waist circumference and triglyceride levels (p = 0,008; r = 0,332), between waist circumference and systolic blood pressure (p = 0,049; r = 0,230), and between waist circumference and diastolic blood pressure (p = 0,017; r = 0,293). Conclusion: waist circumference is positively correlated with triglyceride levels and blood pressure, but does not correlate with fasting blood sugar levels.

Background: There is an emerging global increase of metabolic syndrome prevalence due to increasing of obesity. Obesity and metabolic syndrome beginning in childhood progressing into adulthood.  Dietary saturated fat and fiber intake play a role in etiology in obesity.Objective: This study was to examine the associations between dietary saturated fat intake, fiber intake and components of metabolic syndrome among obese adolescents.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted to 57 obese students aged 13-15 years old of SMP Nasima and SMP Kesatrian 2 Semarang, based on body mass index for ages. Subjects of this study were collected consecutively. Data were collected through waist circumference and blood pressure measurements, fasting biochemical serum analysis and dietary intake assessment.  Rank Spearman and Pearson correlation test was used to examine the associations between of dietary saturated fat and fiber intake to components of metabolic syndrome.Results: There were 46 subjects (80,7 %) had metabolic syndrome and 11 subjects (19,3 %) had the pre-metabolic syndrome. There was no association between dietary saturated fat intake and waist circumference, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose levels and blood pressure. Fiber intake was negatively associated with blood triglyceride levels (r = -0.340; p = 0.01).Conclusion: There was no association between dietary saturated fat intake and components of metabolic syndrome. There was an association between dietary fiber intake with blood triglyceride levels. Dietary fiber intake has an important role in lipid metabolism.

Abstract Background There exist controversies about the health effects of coconut. Fresh coconut consumption on human health has not been studied substantially. Fresh coconut consumption is a regular part of the diet for many people in tropical countries like India, and thus there is an increasing need to understand the effects of fresh coconut on various aspects of health. Aim To compare the effects of increased saturated fatty acid (SFA) and fiber intake, provided by fresh coconut, versus monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and fiber intake, provided by a combination of groundnut oil and groundnuts, on anthropometry, serum insulin, glucose levels and blood pressure in healthy adults. Materials Eighty healthy volunteers, randomized into two groups, were provided with a standardized diet along with either 100 g fresh coconut or an equivalent amount of groundnuts and groundnut oil for a period of 90 days. Assessments such as anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, blood sugar and insulin levels were performed before and after the supplementation period. Results Results of this study showed a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar (FBS) in both the groups. However, a significant reduction in body weight was observed in the coconut group, while a significant increase in diastolic pressure was observed in the groundnut group. Conclusions Results of this study suggest that fresh coconut-added diet helps reduce blood glucose levels and body weight in normal healthy individuals.

Aims and MethodHigh rates of metabolic syndrome exist among patients on clozapine. Monitoring its parameters facilitates interventions which may alleviate negative health consequences. We completed an audit of the monitoring of the parameters of metabolic syndrome in patients on clozapine. The results were compared with the Maudsley Guidelines for monitoring in patients on any antipsychotic medication.ResultsInitial audit showed high overall rates of concordance with guidelines for the frequency of measurement of blood pressure (91.8%), but much lower rates for measuring fasting blood glucose (43.2%) and lipid profile (52.7%), and no record of analysis of waist circumference. This prompted development of a formal protocol for measuring parameters. Repeat audit after 1 year showed marked improvement in rates of measurement.Clinical implicationsImplementation of relatively straightforward measures, such as the introduction of a one-page form on which to record parameters, can lead to a much improved rate of monitoring for metabolic syndrome. This should in turn prompt therapeutic interventions, which are discussed.

Background : Obesity in adolescence associated with the incidence of metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood pressure, high fasting blood glucose, high triglycerides, low HDL and central obesity. An increasing number of metabolic syndrome in line with the increase in the number of obesity. Based on RISKESDAS 2013 increased the proportion of central obesity from 2007 to 2013 by 18.8% to 26.6%. The prevalence of central obesity in Semarang 21.5%.Aim : Knowing the relationship among intake with waist circumference, fasting blood glucose level and blood pressure in obese adolescents in SMAN 9 Semarang.Method : This study was an observational study with cross-sectional design. Sampling was conducted randomized to receive 47 samples. The data collected is macro nutrients intake factors with 24 hours recall method, weight, height, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose level and blood pressure. Data was collected by the method of anthropometry; interviews, blood pressure measurement and fasting blood glucose level measurement. The correlations test using linear regression.Results: There is a correlation between intake with waist circumference (p 0.046 0.05) with a moderate relationship (R = 0.454) and contributed 20.6%, there is a correlation between intake with fasting blood glucose level (0.039 p 0.05) with the level of relationship is (R = 0.448) and contributed 20.1%, there is a correlation between intake with systolic blood pressure (p 0.004 0.05) with a strong correlation (R = 0.556) and contributed 30.6%, and there is no correlation between intake factor with diastolic blood pressure (p 0.113 0.05) and contributed 16.3%.Conclusion: There is a correlation among intake with waist circumference, fasting blood glucose level and systolic blood pressure. There is no correlation between intake with diastolic blood pressure.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a complex disorder defined by cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The Use of Highly active antiretroviral therapy in HIV patients is associated with metabolic syndrome which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of MS among HAART treated HIV patients and HAART naïve patients.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that evaluated 581 (396 females, 184 males) consenting HIV patents in the hospital. Clinical characteristics, anthropometry, blood pressure, lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, fasting plasma insulin, CD4 cell counts and viral load were determined using appropriate standard techniques. MS was defined using International Diabetes Federation (IDF) cut-off values.Results: The overall prevalence of MS was 10.7%, with more females 52 (13.1%) than males 10 (5.4%), p=0.005. MS in patients on HAART was 58 (15.1%) and HAART naive 4 (2.0%). Overall, waist circumference, BMI, systolic blood pressure (BP), diastolic blood pressure (BP), triglycerides and fasting blood glucose were 82.7±11.5, 22.7±, 120.6±17.6, 77.5±10.6, 1.1±0.7 and 5.1±1.9 respectively. Patients with MS had significantly higher (p<0.05) waist circumference (94.1 vs 81.3 cm), BMI (24.8 vs 22.5 kg/m2), systolic BP (135.4 vs 118.8 mmHg), diastolic BP (86.2 vs 76.5 mmHg), triglycerides (1.3 vs 1.0 mmol/l) and fasting blood glucose (6.3 vs 4.9 mmol/l).  Insulin resistance (IR) was higher in patients with MS 11.8(7.9) compared with patients without MS 5.5 (6.8) p=0.02.Conclusions: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in this study was lower than that reported in previous works, the prevalence is much higher in the HAART treated patients. The risk of MS were high triglycerides, hypertension and abnormal fasting blood glucose. There was significant association with the traditional risk factors, age, female gender and HIV duration.

Introduction. Gdue is a nutraceutical obtained from the association of two marine algae, Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus, in addition to chromium picolinate, which could be useful for the treatment of dysglycemia, overweight, and the other components of the metabolic syndrome. The aim of the study was to assess the real-world effectiveness and safety of Gdue when administered to subjects with one or more components of the metabolic syndrome. Methods. A longitudinal, retrospective, observational study, conducted among primary care physicians, nutritionists, and specialists from various disciplines. The impact of 180 days of administration of Gdue was assessed on body weight, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, and blood pressure levels. The likelihood of experiencing a first major cardiovascular event over ten years was estimated using Italian risk charts. General linear models for repeated measures were applied to assess changes in the parameters of interest during the follow-up. Results are expressed as estimated marginal means with their 95% confidence interval. Results. Overall, 505 patients were enrolled by 282 physicians. After 6 months of treatment with Gdue, body weight was reduced on average by 7.3 kg (-8.0; -6.6), waist circumference by 7.5 cm (-8.2; -6.8), fasting blood glucose by 16.3 mg/dL (-17.8; -14.7), HbA1c by 0.55% (-0.62; -0.49), systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 7.1 mmHg (-8.3; -6.0) and 4.2 mmHg (-5.0; -3.5), respectively, LDL cholesterol by 18.2 mg/dL (-21.2; -15.3), and triglycerides by 39 mg/dL (-45; -32). HDL cholesterol was significantly increased by 2.9 mg/dL (0.7; 5.0). The 10-year risk of cardiovascular events significantly decreased by 1.8%, corresponding to a relative risk reduction of 27.7%. Conclusion. Our real-world study shows that 6 months of treatment with Gdue have an impact on all the components of the metabolic syndrome, thus offering the potential for decreasing the cardiovascular risk associated with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract Objectives Precision nutrition leverages the specificity of molecular and phenotypic differences in personalizing diet and lifestyle interventions.Objective for this phase of the study: 1) examine the effectiveness of gene-based nutrition counseling on behavior change measured by weight, body mass index (BMI), blood glucose, lipids, 25-hydroxyvitamin (OH) D, %body fat (BF), waist circumference, and blood pressure. Methods In this prospective multisite RCT, a baseline genomic profile from 70 diet-responsive genes/80 variants, is augmented by biomarkers specific to metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk for each subject. Treatment group (TG) receives gene-based nutrition counseling for six weekly sessions; Control group (CG) receives evidence-based nutrition content in pamphlets directed at preventing metabolic syndrome. A digital app provides real-time health data capture with continuous feedback and is validated by in-person interviews. Primary outcome is weight loss at 12 weeks. Results Army NW cohort has enrolled 90 subjects to date; 49 are assigned to the TG. Sample demographics: males (70%), mean age 32 yrs, 58% married, 75% Caucasian, non-Hispanic, and 78% report some college education. In females, mean BMI 28.3, %BF 34.2, waist circumference 32.2 in; males mean BMI 30.1, %BF 29, waist circumference 40 in. For MetS components, 27/90 subjects show no abnormal components yet 41/90 have 2 or 3 alterations. Elevations noted as follows: fasting blood glucose in 47%, blood pressure in 38%, and waist circumference in 30%. High variant presence is noteworthy for genes with a role in obesity and hypertension. In 71% of subjects baseline 25(OH) D ≤ 30 ng/mL. Preliminary results for primary outcome of weight loss at 12 weeks reveal no change in TG (n = 21), an average loss of 5 lbs in CG (n = 21) within groups, and a significant difference between groups; TG 197.4 (39.3) vs CG 192.6 (40.3), p &lt; .001. Conclusions Digital health integration, along with genomic data and family history, can reveal early signals of risk in a young, generally healthy, military population. Health promotion efforts must drive behavior change at both the individual and population level. Funding Sources The TriService Nursing Research Program
