ZnO is one of the most studied semiconductor materials because of its interesting chemicals, and from a technological point of view, mainly as a consequence of their outstanding properties, such as wurtzite type, non-toxic nature, large band gap, low cost, and environment-friendly. In this work, the ZnO/C composite was synthesized by a simple and fast low-temperature method; the solid product was calcination temperature at 100 to 400 °C. The influence of variation in calcination temperature was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicated a high crystallinity and a nanocrystalline size of the ZnO/C composite hexagonal structure of wurtzite. The SEM image of the samples showed that the powder has a spherical structure of flakes aggregated in the common nucleus like a grid. The sphere consists of spindle and flower-like structures. The optical properties were determined by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and it was found that the band gap energy of ZnO/C composite increase from 3.210 to 3.329 eV with an increase in calcination temperature from 100 to 400 °C. FTIR spectra and EDS analysis showed that the existence of carbon in the composite.

Spinel Zn2SnO4 photocatalysts have been prepared by the solid state reaction. as-prepared samples were characterized by power X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photocatalytic activity measurement. The results show that the reaction temperature have significant effects on the Zn2SnO4 photocatalytic activity . It has also been found that the distribution of the cations in Zn2SnO4 crystal lattice changes with the increase of calcination temperature, causing the local structural fine adjustment that associated with the photocatalytic properties.

Boron-BiVO4 samples were synthesized by sol-gel method. They were characterized by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction. Photocatalytic activity of the obtained BiVO4 samples was investigated through degrading methylene blue (MB). The results reveal that boron-BiVO4 catalysts have monoclinic scheelite structure. The BiVO4 and Co-BiVO4 photocatalysts were responsive to visible light. Co-BiVO4 photocatalyst showed higher photocatalytic activity than pure BiVO4, resulting in the significantly improved efficiency of degradation of MB.

The defect and metallic silver (Ag) in silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) photocatalyst were successfully generated using hydroxyapatite (HA) and glucose. Two steps of synthesis were done in these experiments. Firstly, the Ag/HA powder was prepared by reacting AgNO3 and HA, followed by the addition of a glucose solution. Secondly, the suspension of Ag/HA was reacted with AgNO3 aqueous solution. The yellow product of Ag/Ag3PO4 photocatalyst was produced. The products were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The decreased ratio of O/Ag and metallic Ag formation observed by the XPS was detected as the possible defect and Ag-doping in the photocatalyst. The enhanced photocatalytic activity might be caused by the oxygen vacancy and metallic Ag in Ag3PO4 that enables the separation of photo-generated electrons and holes.

Composite ZnO/CuO was prepared by direct formation of ZnO from Zn(OOCCH3)2 precursor in the presence of CuO with the assistant of the microwave system. The obtained composite was characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Ultraviolet–Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), which shows that the composite with a bandgap of 3.27 eV contains two components, ZnO and CuO. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO/CuO was assessed by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in water under visible light, shows that the photocatalytic activity for the ZnO/CuO composite was remarkably improved compared to single ZnO and CuO. This result is attributed to the reduced recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs by the presence of CuO in the composite, therefore photocatalysis activity increases.

With strong adsorption selectivity and thermal stability, Y2O3was added to ZnO to obtain Y2O3-ZnO complex oxides by a precipitation method. The Y2O3-ZnO complex oxides were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, physisorption analyzer, and terephthalic acid photoluminescence probing techniques and were used for the degradation of 2,4-dinitrophenol. More hydroxyl radicals were generated on the surface of the ZnO after adding moderate Y2O3. The Y2O3-ZnO complex oxides which contained 0.50% Y2O3were proved to be the optimal photocatalyst and achieved a degradation of 81.2% of 2,4-dinitrophenol solution, compared to 57.6% achieved under the same photocatalytic conditions with ZnO alone.

Bi2S3/SnS2 heterostructured photocatalysts were synthesized from BiOI, SnCl[Formula: see text]5H2O and NH2CSNH2 using an economic and simple hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photodegradation activities of the Bi2S3/SnS2 heterostructured photocatalysts were estimated by degrading rhodamine B under simulated sunlight supplied by irradiating with a 350[Formula: see text]W Xe lamp. Bi2S3/SnS2 photocatalysts were prepared using varying percentages of Bi2S3. The sample containing 13% Bi2S3 had the most efficient photocatalyst performance among the tested samples. The photocatalytic mechanism involves heterojunctions formed in the Bi2S3/SnS2, which promoted effective separation of photoinduced electrons and holes.
