The mediating role of mental vulnerability between negative life events and interaction anxiousness among undergraduate students in Liaoning, China (Preprint)

BACKGROUND Interaction anxiousness is common among undergraduate students and adolescent, which could easily lead to a high risk for depression, substance use disorder and suicide among them. However, little is known about the influence factors on interaction anxiousness.Responses from 3 universities in Liaoning province indicate that social anxiety scores of college students are generally high. Mental vulnerability and negative life events have a great influence on the occurrence of interaction anxiety. Mental vulnerability played a partial mediating role between negative life events and interaction anxiousness among undergraduate students, which has often been overlooked in the past.The finding suggest that important to expand the construction of college mental health team and change the previous education mode of mental health. Give students regular psychological tests, early detection of psychological problems, and timely intervention. This study has a further understanding about interaction anxiousness and its influencing factors. Adolescents also belong to the community care group, their mental health problems also need more attention from nursing professionals. OBJECTIVE The study aims to analyze the relationships between mental vulnerability, negative life events and interaction anxiousness among undergraduate students in China and examine the mediating role of mental vulnerability on undergraduate students. METHODS Design and Methods: A cross-sectional survey target for undergraduate students in Liaoning province. Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple linear regression and structuralequation modeling method were applied to analyze the data. RESULTS Findings: The results suggest that mental vulnerability played a partial mediating role between negative life events and interaction anxiousness among undergraduate students.Negative life events had a significant indirect effect on the interaction anxiousness through mental vulnerability. College students are said to have an increasing trend of mental health problems that lead to various negative academic, personal and social outcomes. The current study aimed to determine the mediating role of interpersonal difficulties between parental rejection and mental health problems of college students. A total of 321 college students selected through purposive sampling aged 15to 20 years provided self-report data on EMBU-A (Gerlsma, Arrindell, Van der Veen, & Emmelkamp, 1991), Urdu version of Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS; Aslam, 2007) and Interpersonal Difficulties Scale (IDS; Saleem, Ihsan, & Mahmood, 2014). Pearson Correlation was used to ensure that parental rejection, mental health problems and interpersonal difficulties are related. Results of path analysis revealed that parental rejection has an indirect effect on mental health through interpersonal difficulties. Implications for counselling services are discussed.

Aim: Students are one of the most talented and promising segments of society and future builders of their country, and their level of health and psychological well-being will have a significant impact on learning and increasing their scientific awareness and academic success. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate a structural model of psychological well-being based on negative life events and mindfulness with emphasis on the mediating role  of coping styles. Methods: The method of conducting the present study was descriptive correlational of structurequational type. The statistical population of the study were the undergraduate students of Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, 365 of whom participated through cluster sampling. They responded to questionnaires on negative life events, mindfulness, coping styles, and psychological well-being. The reliability and validity of the instruments were confirmed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and confirmatory factor analysis. To analyze the data, structural equation method was used with Amos software. Results: The results showed that the effect of negative life events on the problem-oriented style and psychological well-being is negative and significant. The effect of mindfulness on the problem-oriented style and psychological well-being is positive and significant. The effect of problem-oriented style on psychological well-being is positive and significant. The mediating role of problem-focused coping style in the relationship between negative life events and mindfulness with psychological well-being is meaningful. Conclusion: The results showed that the model presented among the students of Shahid Beheshti University has a good fit and confirmed the role of the variables of negative life events, mindfulness and problem-oriented coping style in psychological well-being.

Background: Pre-operative patients are not only suffering from physical and physiological symptoms but they might have psychological issues which may lead to mental health issues. However, different psychosocial factors may help in managing the mental health problems in pre-operative patients. Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the mediating role of perceived social support on mental health problems in pre-operative patients. Methodology: The sample of the study consisted of 180 participants who were going to get their major surgery done in a week including 51% men and 49% women between the ages of 18-35 years. The participants were presented with a questionnaire including a demographics sheet and three Urdu translated scales as Self -Compassion Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale. Results: The results indicated that there was a significant negative correlation between self-compassion/perceived social support and mental health problems in pre-operative patients. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation indicated a significant relationship among self-compassion, perceived social support, and mental health problems. Conclusion: The current study spotlighted the importance of the pre-operative time in young adults and the dire need for counseling services to be provided to the patients in this crucial time to enhance the chances of post-operative recovery and wellbeing of the patients.
