Internet Method in Bereavement Research: Comparison of Online and Offline Surveys

This study examines the reliability and validity of internet research in bereavement. Recent literature demonstrates an increased interest in utilizing a more convenient, inexpensive, and rapid internet method to collect data and recruit bereaved participants. For researchers, the internet offers the possibility to learn more about grief from the growing online community of bereaved people. To explore the possible use of internet tools in bereavement research, this study compares online survey method with traditional paper-and-pencil method in grief assessment. One group of bereaved adults ( N = 84) was recruited and completed the survey by mail, and another group of bereaved adults ( N =262) was recruited and completed the same set of questions via internet. The collected data were analyzed to identify both similarities and differences between the two samples' responses and the psychometric characteristics of the Core Bereavement Items inventory (CBI; Burnett, Middleton, Raphael, & Martinek, 1997). Significant differences were found between the two samples in relation to time since loss, cause of death, and relationship to deceased, demonstrating a greater variability in the internet sample. Other demographic characteristics, as well as the grief and meaning making scores, did not differ significantly. In addition, no relevant differences were found in the psychometric properties of the CBI. These findings suggest that the internet-based methods can be a suitable and valid alternative to more traditional paper-and-pencil methods.

Marketers invest in various media platforms to influence consumer behaviour (CB). Advertisement on every media platform has a different composition that engages the consumers in a distinct way. Digitalization has led to changes in consumers’ media habits. Hence, a deeper understanding of advertisements on different media platforms and its implications on CB need to be established. This article focuses on the effects of television (TV), radio, newspapers, magazines and the Internet advertisements on awareness (AWR), interest (INT), conviction (CON), purchase (PUR) and post-purchase (PPUR) behaviour of consumers. The online survey method was utilized for the study. Data were collected from 529 respondents comprising students in India. Statistical tools such as Cronbach alpha, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Kruskal–Wallis (K–W) test were used to analyse the collected data. The results indicate that newspapers advertisements affect all the five stages of CB. The impact of TV and the Internet for creating AWR, INT and CON among the consumers is statistically evident. The results also revealed that magazines and newspapers are effective media in influencing PUR and PPUR behaviour of consumers. Advertising managers can take a cue from this research and enhance the objectivity of advertisements by investing in appropriate media.

IntroductionGovernment-funded research indicates the prevalence of substance use in this age group is decreasing. However, anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise.Previous surveys have been limited by:— difficulty recruiting schools;— the range of substances included;— paper surveys.ObjectivesTo determine whether a secure online survey method improves substance use prevalence data collection in school age adolescents.MethodAn online survey was created following literature review, and assessment of the reliability and validity of existing surveys. A comprehensive range of substances were included. A total of 750 students (11–16 yrs) from a mainstream school in Lancashire completed the survey during a supervised classroom session. Focus groups were conducted with students and teachers.ResultsNo technical problems were encountered and survey data was securely transferred to Excel allowing instant analysis.Teachers felt the survey would be unproblematic to administer independently and found the inclusion of substances such as legal highs, and energy drinks, especially relevant.Most students completed the survey within the session and reported a positive experience, although some difficulties understanding wording were mentioned. They felt an online survey improved confidentiality (and therefore honesty) and was easier to fill in. However, there was concern about teachers reading their responses.ConclusionsA secure online survey may be acceptable to both teachers and students, and enables the collection of hundreds of surveys in a short time period. It also improves analysis techniques.Further analysis of whether there is a teacher-versus-researcher supervision effect on the honesty of student responses is required.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Given that the effective management of TV business demands a lot of data from various methods of marketing research, we defined the main objective of this study as analysis of the Ukrainian TV producers’ content. In our study we applied the methodology of quantitative online-survey of respondents about product proposals and motivational advantages. 460 respondents from all regions of Ukraine, except the Crimea, took part in our online-survey, that insured its representativeness. The content of Ukrainian TV channels was determined through the quantitative method of assessing the particular product and understanding the prospects for its development in the media market. The motivational advantages of the audience were explored relating to consumer advantages in terms of viewing, rating, advertising, packaging, and type of products. Respondents’ attitude to the products in terms of the attractiveness of brands of competing enterprises was studied. The results of this measurement will help to study the attitude of consumers to the content and development of the media market, as well as to identify the advantages and shortcomings of the existing business processes on TV due to the intensive integration of TV resources into the Internet. The main conclusion of our study proves the significance of survey method for expanding and refining knowledge about the audience’s benefits for making effective management decisions.

The aims of this research were to develop and test a scale used to measure leadership in wildland firefighting using two samples of USA wildland firefighters. The first collection of data occurred in the spring and early summer and consisted of an online survey. The second set of data was collected towards late summer and early fall (autumn). The second set of data was collected via hard-copy surveys that were mailed in by respondents who were recruited via email and in person at large wildland fires. Through confirmatory factor analyses, a three-factor, higher-order, multidimensional structure of leadership in wildland fire was supported. The Crewmember Perceived Leadership Scale consists of perceptions of competent decision-making, personal genuineness and integrity of supervisors as seen by their subordinates. Initial evidence of reliability and validity was supported during the first study of this research. Results from Study 1 indicate that higher rankings of fire leaders by their crewmembers was related to higher worker engagement and job satisfaction. The second study included an additional five items to rate fire leaders; the structure of the three leadership components was again supported. Implications for leadership development in wildland fire, future research and practice are discussed.

В статье раскрываются особенности сущностного понимания религиозного экстремизма и организационно-правовой профилактики данного явления. Обращено внимание на важность профилактической работы в рамках предупреждения антиобщественного (девиантного) поведения. Авторами рассматриваются причины и условия формирования религиозного экстремизма и наполнения им сети Интернет. Интернет-сообщество сталкивается с массовой информационной угрозой со стороны экстремистских организаций. Это связано с катастрофически быстрым распространением радикальных идеологий, всеобщей компьютеризацией и информатизацией общественных процессов, что облегчает процесс распространения материалов, носящих экстремистский характер. Религиозный экстремизм является источником вооруженных конфликтов во всем мире. Жертвами этого страшного явления, как правило, являются дети, подростки, молодые люди, кого легко заманить в сети идеологического обмана. Религиозный экстремизм опасен не только разрушением социальных объектов и ценностей, убийствами, террором. Гораздо опаснее сама идеология экстремизма, которая искажает мировоззрение и психику человека. В этих условиях эффективным является проведение профилактических мероприятий с молодым поколением, доведение до людей важности вопроса, осуществление контроля за неблагополучными семьями, обучение молодых лиц толерантности и уважению к окружающим людям. В работе определены направления работы правоохранительных органов по вопросу совершенствования механизма противодействия распространению экстремистской информации. Определена важность международного сотрудничества. The article reveals the features of the essential understanding of religious extremism and organizational and legal prevention of this phenomenon. Attention is drawn to the importance of preventive work as part of the prevention of antisocial (deviant) behavior. The authors consider the reasons and conditions for the formation of religious extremism and the filling of the Internet. The online community is facing a massive information threat from extremist organizations. This is due to the catastrophically lightning-fast spread of radical ideologies, the general computerization and informatization of social processes, which facilitates the process of distributing materials of an extremist nature. Religious extremism is a source of armed conflict throughout the world. The victims of this terrible phenomenon, as a rule, are children, adolescents, young people and girls - whom it is easy to lure into networks of ideological deception. Religious extremism is dangerous not only the destruction of social objects and values, murders, terror. The ideology of extremism itself, which distorts the worldview and the human psyche, is much more dangerous. Religious extremism is a source of armed conflict throughout the world. The victims of this terrible phenomenon, as a rule, are children, adolescents, young people and girls - whom it is easy to lure into networks of ideological deception. Religious extremism is dangerous not only the destruction of social objects and values, murders, terror. The ideology of extremism itself, which distorts the worldview and the human psyche, is much more dangerous.

BACKGROUND The rapid development of health information technology has an increasingly significant impact on nursing work. The development of informatization also puts forward higher requirements for nurses under standardized training (NUST). Informatics knowledge and skills are essential if clinicians are to master the large volume of information generated in healthcare today. Nurses with competent nursing informatics competencies (NIC) will be able to better adapt to the needs of work and the development of the times. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore, analyze, and discuss the current situation of NIC of NUST in China, and analyze the influencing factors, to provide references for improving the NIC of NUST. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional survey of standard training nurses' NIC in a tertiary hospital in Sichuan Province, China, with convenience sampling. The study consists of two parts included socio-demographic characteristics and NIC, a self-designed general information questionnaire, and a Self-Assessment Nursing Informatics Competency Scale-SF28 were used as survey tools. An online survey collected the data, and the scores of nurses' NIC were analyzed, and the factors were determined by linear regression statistical analysis. RESULTS Overall 191 target population responded to the questionnaire, including 22 males (11.52%) and 169 females (88.48%), the age range was 21 to 28 years, the average age was 24.64 (SD 1.43). 53 persons without computer level certificate (27.75%), 138 persons with computer level certificate (72.25%), the total score of Self-Assessment Nursing Informatics Competency Scale was 68.65 (SD 10.47), the scores of each dimension were role of clinical information 10.12 (SD 2.17), basic computer knowledge and skills 26.64 (SD 4.96), application ability of computer skills 7.16 (SD 1.82), wireless equipment skills 8.02 (SD 2.04), nursing information attitude 16.73 (SD 3.25). In the analysis of influencing factors of NIC, “whether learned professional knowledge through the internet” is the influencing factor of NIC (P< .05). CONCLUSIONS The clinical nursing informatics (NC) of nurses was at a medium level, mainly influenced by “whether learned professional knowledge through the internet.” In the future regulation process, it is necessary to strengthen further the capacity training of information to improve their clinical information decision-making ability and better serve patients.

Time management is the ability of consciously deciding and controlling the amount of time spent on different activities in order to be more productive and effective. In order to achieve academic success, students should be able to manage a large number of activities, from going to lectures, studying, participating in extra-curricular activities, to making sure they are getting enough rest to stay healthy. The purpose of this research was to determine if there are any significant differences in the effective time management between Chinese and Croatian students. Even though the cultural differences between these two groups are substantial, both groups are becoming a part of the same education and business market. The research was conducted on the sample of 340 Chinese and Croatian students using an online survey. The results have shown that in several time management activities there are statistically significant differences between Chinese and Croatian students. The results also indicate that the Croatian respondents are better at setting goals, determining priorities and performing tasks by priority, while Chinese students delegate tasks and determine and eliminate time wasting activities more often than their Croatian counterparts do. On the other hand, Croatian students waste more time on activities such as conducting tasks of small importance and fun activities of no relevance (e.g. “surfing” the Internet, private telephone conversations, chatting, etc.), while Chinese students are in the forefront with regard to ineffective and supernumerary meetings and overly long and supernumerary phone conversations.
