The article is devoted to conducting a psychotherapy group performing a combined fairy-tale plot. The participants were primary schoolers with neurotic symptoms and developmental delay, they were patients of a psycho-neurological sanatorium (Moscow). The group was working through rehearsing in a fairy tale puppet theatre. General theoretical and methodical basis of fairy-tale performing as a psychotherapy approach is described. Three levels of the psychotherapeutic work are developed: 1) working with a group as a whole with common problems of participants, 2) working on problems of a child as an individual and 3) working on a fairy tale individually. The assessment of the therapeutic approach effectiveness is discussed in the context of children’s being at the institution. As the result of the psychotherapy the children’s proneness to conflict, anxiety, neuroticism, neurotic symptoms were observed to have decreased and their self-esteem appeared to have become more realistic.

A total of 107 Malay primary school girls (8–9 yr. old) completed a set of measurements on eating behavior (ChEAT, food neophobia scales, and dieting experience), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, body shape satisfaction, dietary intake, weight, and height. About 38% of the girls scored 20 and more on the ChEAT, and 46% of them reported dieting by reducing sugar and sweets (73%), skipping meals (67%), reducing fat foods (60%) and snacks (53%) as the most frequent methods practiced. In general, those girls with higher ChEAT scores tended to have lower self-esteem ( r = .39), indicating they were more unwilling to try new foods (food neophobic) ( r = .29), chose a smaller figure for desired body size ( r = −.25), and were more dissatisfied with their body size ( r = .31).

Abstract This study investigates the mechanisms by which biculturalism impacts various health outcomes amongst youth migrants to Hawai’i who are from the US-Affiliated Pacific Islands jurisdictions. Using purposive sampling, 284 males and females (twelve to nineteen years old) of Pacific Islander ethnicities in Hawai’i completed a survey. Results from path analysis showed that biculturalism significantly and positively affected self-esteem that, in turn, improved eating attitude, body satisfaction and perceived well-being. Further, eating attitude increased healthy eating behaviour and body satisfaction that, in turn, positively affected general health perception and body satisfaction. Positive smoking attitudes increased smoking activities, which negatively affect general health perception. The study demonstrated that self-esteem impacted overall health through its influence on enhancing positive perceptions about the importance of healthy eating, body satisfaction and well-being. Biculturalism indirectly led to increased self-esteem, which in turn directly influenced attitudes about healthy eating, body satisfaction and perceived well-being. Our study provides strong evidence that addressing the problem of health disparities for minority populations in the USA has to start with reaffirming the value of diversity and multiculturalism and embracing an individual’s historic cultural identity. Specific implications for funding agencies and researchers of minority health programs are discussed.
