Thomas Pfau (Duke University) explores the radical transformation of the Bildungsroman - and of the image ( Bild ) as its narrative, speculative fuel - in ‘The Magic Mountain’. Contrasting Mann's narrative process with that of Goethe and Hegel, and drawing on the sociological writings of Georg Simmel and Arnold Gehlen, Pfau reads Mann's novel as decisively breaking with Romanticism's self-generating, organicist, and teleological conception of cultural narrative.

The heroine of Richardson's first novel is neither a meretricious young hussy nor a paragon of virtue; she is a complex personality who moves from a naive adolescence to a composed maturity in the course of the narrative. The conflict between her devotion to moral principle and her growing affection for Mr. B., which develops in the first, or Bedfordshire, section of the novel, brings a near-psychic collapse in the second, or Lincolnshire, section. The imagery and symbolism show the nature of her torments, her growing awareness of a love that combines eros and agape, and her need for the reconciliation between conscience and libido which is completed after her return to the Bedfordshire estate in the third section. The formal symmetry of the novel evolves from the narrative process within which Pamela is tested and proved capable of an honest love and a tranquil marriage.

Little is known about the contributions of African-American slaves in the histories of various business domains, including accounting. Some authors attribute this scholarly silence to ideological motives due to race-ethnicity and bigotry. Others note that this paucity reflects not only a lack of data but also an inability to adequately approach the contributions of minorities to the accounting profession. Consequently, there are hidden voices in accounting history that should be explored. One of those voices belongs to Benjamin Thornton Montgomery, a Southern slave who became a plantation manager and owner. Observing Montgomery’s practices through the unique historical lens of the ante-bellum period of the United States, we argue that he should also be acknowledged for his responsibilities as an accountant. Accordingly, we use an analytically structured narrative process to examine the compelling case of Ben Montgomery to inform a more accurate and balanced historical foundation of accounting practice in America.

The development of speech must be seen not only in the linguistic aspect (such as mastering the phonetic, lexical and grammatical habits of the child), but also in the area of communication skills (forming the child's skills to interact with peers and adults) that are important not only for the culture of speech, but also for the culture of communication. Communicative competence in pre-school age is therefore seen as the ability of children not only to form separate phrases but also to choose those that best reflect the necessary concrete behavior in individual speech situations and speech interaction because language as a means of communication it only makes sense in a given context. Namely the relationship between communication and socialization could lead to the formation of children of so-called soft skills. The child's ability to understand a specific speech situation in which he / she is placed allows him / her to actively master the language. In order to structure its narrative and select the correct means of expression, the child is placed in an imaginary speech situation, which largely directs his speech in the service of the specific communicative task and forms the basis of communicative competence. At preschool age, it covers the social context of language competency, that is, everything related to the situation in which the child communicates through language and by all means. The development of the communicative side of the creative storyteling at preschool age requires the development of such a system of speech tasks that stimulates both the creative imagination and the fulfillment of the communicative task set forth in the narrative process. This article focuses on the communicative side of verbal creativity by analyzing the ability of children to organize their own speech in accordance with a specific communicative purpose. It provides a tool for assessing the communicative focus of creative stories by analyzing the correspondence of the produced text with the theme, the preferred speech genre and the speech means that children use in their narrative.

Debuting in 2013, Esquire Network’s first season of White Collar Brawlers features professional-class men with workplace conflicts looking to “settle the score in the ring.” In the show, white-collar men are portrayed as using boxing to reclaim ostensibly primal aspects of masculinity, which their professional lives do not provide, making them appear as better men and more productive constituents of a postindustrial service economy. Through this narrative process, White Collar Brawlers romanticizes a unique fusion of postindustrial white-collar employment and the blue-collar labors of the boxing gym. This construction, which Esquire calls “modern manhood,” simultaneously empowers professional-class men while limiting the social mobility of actual blue-collar workers. Based on a critical textual analysis that adopts provisional and rudimentary aspects of Wacquant’s conception of “pugilistic capital,” we contend that Esquire Network has created a show where men are exposed to and sold an image of “modern manhood” that reifies class-based differences and reaffirms the masculine hegemony of white-collar identities.
