The plastic deformation of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) depends significantly on applied stress states, and more importantly, in practical applications of BMGs as structural materials, they always deform under complex stress fields. The understanding of deformation behavior of BMGs under complex stress fields is important not only for uncovering the plastic deformation mechanisms of BMGs, but also for developing BMG components with excellent mechanical performance. In this article, we briefly summarize the recent research progress on the deformation behavior of BMGs under complex stress fields, including the formation and propagation of shear bands, tunable macroscopic plasticity, and serrated plastic flows. The effect of complex stress fields on the plastic deformation mechanisms of BMGs is discussed from simple stress gradient to tailored complex stress fields. The deformation behavior of high entropy alloys (HEAs) under complex stress states has also been discussed. Challenges, potential implications and some unresolved issues are proposed.

In an attempt to incorporate tin (Sn) into high-entropy alloys composed of refractory metals Hf, Nb, Ti and Zr with the addition of 3d transition metals Cu, Fe, and Ni, we synthesized a series of alloys in the system HfTiZrSnM (M = Cu, Fe, Nb, Ni). The alloys were characterized crystallographically, microstructurally, and compositionally, and their physical properties were determined, with the emphasis on superconductivity. All Sn-containing alloys are multi-phase mixtures of intermetallic compounds (in most cases four). A common feature of the alloys is a microstructure of large crystalline grains of a hexagonal (Hf, Ti, Zr)5Sn3 partially ordered phase embedded in a matrix that also contains many small inclusions. In the HfTiZrSnCu alloy, some Cu is also incorporated into the grains. Based on the electrical resistivity, specific heat, and magnetization measurements, a superconducting (SC) state was observed in the HfTiZr, HfTiZrSn, HfTiZrSnNi, and HfTiZrSnNb alloys. The HfTiZrSnFe alloy shows a partial SC transition, whereas the HfTiZrSnCu alloy is non-superconducting. All SC alloys are type II superconductors and belong to the Anderson class of “dirty” superconductors.

This review discusses an area of expertise that is at the intersection of three large parts of materials science. These are phase transformations, severe plastic deformation (SPD), and high-entropy alloys (HEA). First, SPD makes it possible to determine the borders of single-phase regions of existence of a multicomponent solid solution in HEAs. An important feature of SPD is that using these technologies, it is possible to obtain second-phase nanoparticles included in a matrix with a grain size of several tens of nanometers. Such materials have a very high specific density of internal boundaries. These boundaries serve as pathways for accelerated diffusion. As a result of the annealing of HEAs subjected to SPD, it is possible to accurately determine the border temperature of a single-phase solid solution area on the multicomponent phase diagram of the HEA. Secondly, SPD itself induces phase transformations in HEAs. Among these transformations is the decomposition of a single-phase solid solution with the formation of nanoparticles of the second phase, the formation of high-pressure phases, amorphization, as well as spinodal decomposition. Thirdly, during SPD, a large number of new grain boundaries (GBs) are formed due to the crystallites refinement. Segregation layers exist at these new GBs. The concentration of the components in GBs differs from that in the bulk solid solution. As a result of the formation of a large number of new GBs, atoms leave the bulk solution and form segregation layers. Thus, the composition of the solid solution in the volume also changes. All these processes make it possible to purposefully influence the composition, structure and useful properties of HEAs, especially for medical applications.
