The material in powder state has long been used by selective laser sintering (SLS) for making rapid prototyping (RP) parts. A new approach to fabricate smoother surface roughness RP parts of ceramic material from slurry-sate has been developed in this study. The silica slurry was successfully laser-gelling in a self-developed laser sintering equipment. In order to overcome the insufficient bonding strength between layers, a strategy is proposed to generate ceramic parts from a single line, a single layer, to multi-layers of gelled cramic in this paper. It is found that when the overlap of each single line is 25% and the over-gel between layers is 30%, stronger and more accurate dimensional parts can be obtained under a laser power of 15W, a laser scanning speed of 250 mm/s, and a layer thickness of 0.1 mm. The 55:45 wt. % of the proportion between the silica powder and silica solution results in suitable viscosity of the ceramic slurries without precipitation. Furthermore, the effects of process parameters for the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness of the gelled parts are investigated and appropriate parameters are obtained.

Selective laser sintering (SLS) is being developed for dental applications. This study aimed to investigate the properties of Ti-6Al-4V and pure titanium specimens fabricated using the SLS process and compare them with casting specimens. Besides, the effect of the building direction on the properties of the SLS specimens was also investigated. Specimens were prepared by SLS using Ti-6Al-4V powder or pure titanium powder. Casting specimens were also prepared using Ti-6Al-4V alloys and pure titanium. The mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation), physical properties (surface roughness, contact angle, and Vickers hardness); corrosion resistors (color difference and corrosion), and surface properties (chemical composition and surface observation) were examined. Both Ti-6Al-4V and pure titanium specimens produced using the SLS process had comparable or superior properties compared with casting specimens. In comparing the building directions, specimens fabricated horizontally to the printing platform showed the greatest tensile strength, and the surface roughness scanned in the horizontal direction to the platform showed the smallest. However, there was no significant effect on other properties. Thus, the SLS process with Ti-6Al-4V powder and pure titanium powder has great performance for the fabrication of dental prosthesis, and there is a possibility for it to take the place of conventional methods.

Polyamide 12 (PA 22000) is a well-known material and one of the most biocompatible materials tested and used to manufacture customized medical implants by selective laser sintering technology. To optimize the implants, several research activities were considered, starting with the design and manufacture of test samples made of PA 2200 by selective laser sintering (SLS) technology, with different processing parameters and part orientations. The obtained samples were subjected to compression tests and later to SEM analyses of the fractured zones, in which we determined the microstructural properties of the analyzed samples. Finally, an evaluation of the surface roughness of the material and the possibility of improving the surface roughness of the realized parts using finite element analysis to determine the optimum contact pressure between the component made of PA 2200 by SLS and the component made of TiAl6V4 by SLM was performed.

This work presents the results of a study carried out to determine the topology of lateral surface and its effect on the process parameters of components manufactured by selective laser sintering (SLS). Using Taguchi’s experimental technique, an orthogonal array of L4 had been developed. Surface roughness was measured along built direction and analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was used to investigate the effect of process parameters and to identify main process parameter that influences surface roughness on SLS components. It has been found that slice thickness and scan spacing have more significant influence than the laser power. Microstructure of the sintered specimen along the build direction was studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). It was observed that variations in slice thickness affect surface topology of SLS components.

The agricultural and forestry waste walnut shell and copolyester hot-melt adhesives (Co-PES) powder were selected as feedstock. A kind of low-cost, low-power consumption, and environmentally friendly walnut shell/Co-PES powder composites (WSPC) was used for selective laser sintering (SLS). Though analyzing the size and morphology of walnut shell particle (≤550 μm) as well as performing an analysis of surface roughness, density, and mechanical test of WSPC parts with different particle sizes, results showed that the optimal mechanical performance (tensile strength of 2.011 MPa, bending strength of 3.5 MPa, impact strength of 0.718 KJ/m2) as walnut shell powder particle size was 80 to 120 μm. When walnut shell powder particle diameter was 120 to 180 μm, the minimum value of surface roughness of WSPC parts was 15.711 μm and density was approximately the maximum (0.926 g/cm3).

Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) is a powder-based Additive Manufacturing process in which parts are built by sintering of selected areas of layers of Polyamide (PA12) powder using CO2 laser. The purpose of this work is to study experimentally the effect of orientation of the component, fill scan spacing and layer thickness on the surface roughness (Ra) of the customized bone implant fabricated through SLS technique. For this study computer tomography scan data was taken and converted to standard triangulation file (.stl) format using mimics software. Taguchis Design of Experiment approach was used for this study. An L27 Orthogonal Array (OA) of Taguchi design was used. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was then performed on S/N (Signal-to-Noise ratio) to determine the statistical significance and contribution of each factor on the surface roughness. The results indicated that orientation and layer thickness are significant parameters to cause appreciable improvement in surface finish.
