In this paper, we examine the concept of the social balance sheet (SBS) and its evolution in corporate social reports that large companies have to issue today in their yearly statements. The SBS allows companies to evaluate their compliance with corporate social responsibility during a specific period and quantify its level of accomplishment. From a methodological perspective, this research analyzed the information that should be contained in the SBS report comparing economic value added (EVA) with other social value added statements (SVA), analyzing also in detail the case of Spain’s Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) bank as one of the pioneers in offering social reports. Along with this study, their metrics following EVA were recalculated and a more academic SVA statement was proposed for this specific case.

Some of the constructs in the field of performance management are intuitive or not empirically validated. This study provides a data-driven framework for measuring and improving the performance through synchronized strategies. The ultimate goal was to provide support for increasing business performance. Empirical research materializes in an exploratory case study and a statistical analysis with econometric models. The case study revealed that a company can improve its performance, even in periods of growth, being characterized by consistent investments. The statistical analysis, performed on a restricted sample of companies, confirmed the results that were provided by the case study. The measurement of performance was made by capitalizing on financial and non-financial data precisely to intensify the interest for corporate sustainability. The obtained results, contrary to previous research that showed that economic value added (EVA) is negatively influenced by the increase in invested capital, open up new research perspectives to find out whether, at the industry level, performance appraisal that is based on EVA stimulates the development of a business’s economic capital. The research has a double utility: scientific (by providing an overview of the state of the art in the field of performance management) and practical (by providing a reference model for measuring and monitoring performance).

Abstract

Geographic Information System (GIS) with suitable land management information services so that the land will be of economic value, therefore this study discusses the mapping and assessment of the potential of coastal land resources in supporting sustainable aquaculture, tourism, conservation, and fishing grounds. The descriptive research method uses a survey approach for observation of research areas and secondary data collection as well as a spatial analysis approach for land suitability parameters and criteria. This data processing and analysis technique uses GIS software namely ArcGIS 10.1 with a scoring and overlay model. The results of the study with the Padaido Islands case study can be concluded that currently with the GIS being built, the Regional Government of Biak Numfor has been able to cultivate coastal land to be used according to the potential of the land that should be, such as the potential land for seaweed cultivation business area of 13,269.41 ha or 94%, for sea cucumber cultivation covering 7,069.91 ha or 83%, as coastal tourism activities covering 7,778.45 ha or 86%, as conservation activities covering 2,957.54 ha or 163%, for reef catchments covering 2,078.92 ha or 80%, and as a pelagic catchment area 1,585.61 ha or 87%.

Biogas production process is an alternative method to reduce dependency on non-renewable fossil-based energy consumption and also can reduce greenhouse gases production both domestically and industrially. The existing biogas technology is suitable to be adapted in small-micro-medium enterprises and domestics, specifically for those who raise cattle. The case study was performed by observation of biogas production with various wastes as feed, namely cow dung, quail manure, and wastewater of tofu production. The study conducted via direct interviews with stake holders and visitations to the instalations. Based on our observation, biogas production from cow dung exhibits the shortest retention time compared to the others, aside from the value of C/N ratio of the biogas feedstocks. The presence of biogas production installations are significantly reducing the energy supplies among the users. Beside as biogas product, the instalations also produce solid and liquid fertilizers as by-products and have relatively high economic value. Socio – engineering problems based on the application of biodigester are also studied.
