Abstract Chitosan hydrogel beads were prepared by a precipitation process, and were used to investigate the adsorption of malachite green (MG) oxalate under various conditions. It was found that adsorption equilibrium was most sensitive to the pH value at pH <8 while fixed bed breakthrough kinetics presented asymmetric S-shaped profiles which could not be adequately described by conventional models such as Adams-Bohart and Yoon-Nelson. The possible reasons were discussed and an improved Adams-Bohart model was proposed to better describe the changes in mass transfer mechanisms during adsorption.

Sugar beet pulp (SBP) was used as low value adsorbent for the removal of calcium from hard water. Batch experiments were conducted to determine the factors affecting adsorption of the process such as pH value and Ca concentration. The adsorption equilibrium of Ca2+ by the SBP is reached after 100min and a pseudo second-order kinetic model can describe the adsorption process. The initial concentrations of Ca varied from 927 to 1127mgCa2+/L. A dose of 30g/L sugar beet pulp was sufficient for the optimum removal of calcium. The overall uptake of Ca ions by sugar beet pulp has its maximum at pH=8. The adsorption equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation.

AbstractMelanoma is the most lethal dermal tumor, and a high recurrence rate and skin defects are two main serious problems. An antimelanoma material, which effectively inhibits tumor recurrence and possesses excellent biocompatibility, is urgently needed to treat melanoma. In this study, we developed a novel antitumor Yb3+ [Yb(NO3)3]containing chitosan hydrogel (Yb-CS hydrogel) by dissolving Yb(NO3)3 and chitosan in acetic acid solution and forming composite hydrogels by a freeze-drying process after adding NaOH to the mixed solution. In vitro studies demonstrated that the Yb3+ produces effect of inducing cell death in Yb-CS hydrogel. Moreover, we found that the Yb-CS hydrogel inhibited a focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-dependent signaling pathway and induced B-16 cell anoikis. However, the Yb-CS hydrogel was less effective on L929 normal mouse dermal cells. In vivo studies showed that the Yb-CS hydrogel inhibited the recurrence of melanoma in a mouse bare xenograft tumor model. We concluded that the Yb-CS hydrogel could potentially be used in the antimelanoma field, especially in the inhibition of melanoma recurrence.

Citrobacter sedlackii RI11, isolated from acclimated textile effluent after selective enrichment on synthetic dyes, was assessed for malachite green (MG) biotreatment potency. Results indicate that this bacterium has potential for use in effective treatment of MG contaminated wastewaters under shaking conditions at neutral and alkaline pH value, characteristic of typical textile effluents. Also, the newly isolated strain can tolerate higher doses of dye and decolorize up to 1,000 mg/l of dye. When used as microbial surfactant to enhance MG biodecolorization, Bacillus subtilis SPB1-derived lipopeptide accelerated the decolorization rate and maximized the decolorization efficiency at an optimal concentration of biosurfactant of about 0.075%. Studies ensured that MG removal by this strain could be due to biodegradation and/or adsorption. Results on germination potencies of different seeds using the treated dyes under different conditions favor the use of SPB1 biosurfactant for the treatment of MG.

Batch tests were used to investigate the effects of pH and contact time on the adsorption capability of peat. The results indicate that adsorption of uranyl ions on peat increase with increasing pH from 1 to 5. However it takes longer contact time to reach the adsorption equilibrium with increase of pH from 1 to 5. The adsorption process can be described by type 1 of the pseudo-second-order kinetics excellently.
