The complex non-linear behavior presented in the biological treatment of wastewater requires an accurate model to predict the system performance. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI) model, based on the combination of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and genetic algorithms (GAs), to find the optimum performance of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) for saline wastewater treatment. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was predicted using conductivity, organic loading rate (OLR) and temperature as input variables. The ANN model was built from experimental data and performance was assessed through the maximum mean absolute percentage error (= 9.226%) computed from the measured and model predicted values of the COD. Accordingly, the ANN model was used as a fitness function in a GA to find the best operational condition. In the worst case scenario (low energy requirements, high OLR usage and high salinity) this model guaranteed COD removal efficiency values above 70%. This result is consistent and was validated experimentally, confirming that this ANN-GA model can be used as a tool to achieve the best performance of a UASB reactor with the minimum requirement of energy for saline wastewater treatment.

The Buoyant Filter Bio-Reactor (BFBR) is a novel and very efficient method for the treatment of complex wastewater. Sewage is a complex wastewater containing insoluble COD contributed by fat and proteins. The fat and proteins present in the domestic sewage cause operational problems and underperformance in the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor, used now for treating sewage anaerobically. The biogas yield from the BFBR is 0.36 m3/kg COD reduced and the methane content was about 70–80%. Production of methane by anaerobic digestion of organic waste had the benefit of lower energy costs for treatment and is thus environmentally beneficial to the society by providing a clean fuel from renewable feed stocks. The BFBR achieved a COD removal efficiency of 80–90% for an organic loading rate of 4.5 kg/m3/d at a hydraulic retention time of 3.25 hours. The effluent COD was less than 100 mg/l, thus saving on secondary treatment cost. No pretreatment like sedimentation was required for the influent to the BFBR. The BFBR can produce low turbidity effluent as in the activated sludge process (ASP). The land area required for the BFBR treatment plant is less when compared to ASP plant. Hence the problem of scarcity of land for the treatment plant is reduced. The total expenditure for erecting the unit was less than 50% as that of conventional ASP for the same COD removal efficiency including land cost.

Results on the applicability of microwave assisted synthesized poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (polyDADMAC) in reactive dye containing textile wastewater treatment are reported. Diallyldimethylammonium chloride and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) have been characterized by spectral means. The microwave assisted synthesized polyDADMAC has shown some effectiveness in textile wastewater treatment. COD removal efficiency of actual textile wastewater is below 30% whereas the standard dye sample shows about 50-60% COD removal efficiency. TDS and TSS also decreased after treatment of the wastewater with polyDADMAC.Journal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, Vol. 41, No. 2, 165-174, 2017

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the full-scale internal circulation (IC) reactor in biodegrading of municipal solid waste (MSW) fresh leachate under mesophilic conditions, where the anaerobic process stability, biogas yield, and sludge granulation were intensively investigated. The effects of operational parameters on the influent organic loading rate (OLR), chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, alkalinity (ALK), pH, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulation, and effluent recirculation were also studied. The results showed that the reactor operated stably and effectively. The COD removal efficiency and biogas yield could be maintained at (92.8 ± 2.0)% and (0.47 ± 0.05) m3/kg CODremoval, respectively, with the influent OLR (24.5 ± 0.9) kg COD/(m3 d) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) 2.7d during the stable operation phase. Meanwhile, this study demonstrated that 1.5–3.0 m/h would be the optimal Vup for the reactor, corresponding to the effluent recirculation of 32.5–78.0 m3/h. Moreover, it was found that the content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the anaerobic sludge increased from 50.3 to 140.7 mg/g volatile suspended solids (VSS), and the sludge had good granular performance during the reactor operation.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has the potential to become a promising sustainable technology of wastewater treatment. Usually, the investigations on MFCs are aimed at maximized power production in the system. In this article, we focused on the optimization of wood industry wastewater treatment in MFC, in combination with municipal wastewater as a source of microorganisms. We investigated the influence of different external resistance (2000 Ω, 1000 Ω, 500 Ω, and 100 Ω) on power density and wastewater treatment efficiency (chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal) in 1-month MFC operation time. We found that the highest COD removal was for MFCs under R = 1000 Ω after 22 days of MFC operation, while the highest current density was obtained for the lowest applied resistance. The results imply that wastewater treatment parameters such as resistance and time of MFC operation should be a subject of optimization for each specific type of wastewater used, in order to maximize either wastewater treatment efficiency or power production in MFC. Thus, optimization of power production and COD removal efficiency in MFCs need to be run separately as different resistances are required for maximizing these two parameters. When COD removal efficiency is a subject of optimization, there is no universal value of external resistance, but it should be set to the specific wastewater characteristics.

The interior diversion expanded granular sludge bed was concurrently operated for 140d to study the characteristic of the granular sludge bed. The influent COD concentration varied from 2000mg/L to 22300 mg/L, hydraulic retention time was maintained constant at 24 h and the organic loading rate was changed through a change in substrate concentration. The results showed that the reactor had great COD removal efficiency. When the MLSS was 23.1g/L, the influent COD was 18890mg/L, the COD removal efficiency was 80.4%; The interior diversion EGSB could greatly improve the role of gas-dynamic, when the liquid upflow velocity was 3.55m/h, the gas production was 5.96 L/d shows higher sludge bed expansion rate than 2.77 L/d about 9.5%. During the experimental, the anaerobic sludge has the following properties: the average sludge diameter was increased from 0.41mm to 1.66mm. Observed under the scanning electronic microscopy, we found that the sludge appeared obviously granulation, the bacteria amount and species are more than seed sludge after operation of 50d. It was found that rough surface of anaerobic sludge has clear figure with being covered by mucous lamina, with visible hole or cavity on surface.

Effect of cationic polymer on granulation and COD removal efficiency in lab scale UASB reactors was examined, treating low-strength wastewater (COD 300-500mg l-1) at room temperature. It was shown that cationic polymer was more effective for enhancing sludge granulation and COD removal efficiency as compared to the control experiment (without additives). After day 166 of operation, the amount of granules size above 0.5mm accounted for 32.1% of total sludge, higher than that of control experiment (19.3%). At 1.03 kg COD m-3 d-1 of OLR and 9.8 h of HRT, the effluent VFA had a maximum value of 168mg l-1 and 240mg l-1 in Reactor A and B respectively. The polymer-amended reactor took 36days to receive 1.44 kg COD m-3 d-1 of OLR at the 7.8 h of HRT, shorter than the control reactor (54days). The two reactors obtained above 80% in COD removal efficiency. It is shown that UASB reactor can also achieve higher COD removal treating low strength wastewater at room temperature.

Based on the JICA Report, 1995 the environmental pollution in Jabodetabek was 80% caused by the domestic wastewater. To minimize the environmental pollution, the wastewater have to be treated before discharge to river. Problem which often emerge in management of domestic waste is the limited land area and existing fund to built a wastewater treatment facility and also the high operating cost. To overcome these problems, it needs development of low cost wastewater treatment technology with high removal efficiency, easy to operate and also should be compact. A combination technology of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) and Downflow Hanging Sponge (DHS) represents an economic wastewater treatment, easy to operate and has high removal efficiency that is 98% for BOD and 99,8% for bacterium. However, to build the wastewater treatment facility by using the UASB and DHS technology, it needs a feasibility study. This paper explains an economic and social feasibility study of application the UASB and DHS wastewater treatment technology at Bogor City. By the calculation of benefit and cost ratio (BCR), the result shows that the BCR is 2.13. It means the UASB and DHS wastewater treatment project at Bogor City was feasible.

A 4 L submerged tubular ceramic membrane bioreactor (MBR) was applied in laboratory scale to treat 2,400 mg-COD/L high strength wastewater. A prolonged sludge retention time (SRT) of 200 day, in contrast to the conventional SRT of 5 to 15 days, was explored in this study, aiming to reduce substantially the amount of disposed sludge. The MBR system was operated for a period of 142 days in four runs, differentiated by specific oxygen utilization rate (SOUR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT). It was found that the MBR system produced more than 99% of suspended solid reduction. Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) was found to be adversely proportional to HRT, and in general higher than the value from a conventional wastewater treatment plant. A chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was achieved as high as 98% in Run 1, when SOUR was in the range of 100-200 mg-O/g-MLVSS/hr. Unexpectedly, the COD removal efficiency in Run 2 to 4 was higher than 92%, on average, where higher HRT and abnormally low SOUR of 20-30 mg-O/g-MLVSS/hr prevailed. It was noted that the ceramic membrane presented a significant soluble nutrient rejection when the microbial metabolism of biological treatment broke down.

A bench-scale horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactor was assayed aiming to verify its potential use for phenol degradation. The HAIB reactor consisted of a bore-silicate tube (100 cm long; 5.04 cm diameter) filled with polyurethane foam matrices containing immobilized anaerobic sludge. Before being subjected to phenol, the reactor was fed with synthetic substrate at the influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 1,028 mg.l−1 achieving 98% of COD removal efficiency. Thereafter, phenol as the sole carbon source was added under step-increasing concentrations from 50 to 1,200 mg.l−1. Phenol degradation was evaluated by gas chromatographic analysis of influent and effluent samples. Process monitoring included determinations of pH, volatile acids, alkalinity and COD. The HAIB reactor was operated at a constant hydraulic detention time (HDT) of 12 hours. After 33 days with 50 mg/l of phenol in the influent, the reactor achieved 98% of COD removal efficiency. Successful phenol degradation (efficiency removal of 99%) occurred for influent concentrations of 100, 300, 600, 900 and 1,200 mg.l−1 after 148, 58, 47, 29 and 7 days, respectively. The predominance of Methanosaeta-like, rods and methanogenic cocci could be observed in all the operating conditions, besides the presence of phenol oxidizing microorganisms as irregular rods. The results indicate that phenol degradation at very high rates can be accomplished in HAIB reactors containing acclimatized biomass.
