Technical basis for managing water supply in critical basins: new alternatives applied to the Colombian case

In order to advance towards solving the problem of water supply in critical basins in Colombia, the Environmental Ministry and the Javeriana University formulated the technical basis for management of water supply in critical basins. The aim was at developing a methodology that handles in the most efficient way water resources in that kind of system. This guide proposes usage of new technologies for management. Basic geophysical characterization of basins was proposed to be carried out with free GIS software. For water balance, the Thomas model (abcd) was proposed. In addition, it is taken into account the minimum ecological flow rate and the minimum requirements for the control of water quality in the streams. The demand is calculated spatially in order to know how the water resource in basins should be distributed. With the results of water balance and water demand a Decision Support System (DSS) is proposed that joins both the technical results and the expert knowledge of the basin inhabitants. The methodology was applied in critical basins with different conditions and the results show a promising performance of the methodology.

Climate change is likely to decrease surface water availability in Central Asia, thereby necessitating land use adaptations in irrigated regions. The introduction of trees to marginally productive croplands with shallow groundwater was suggested for irrigation water-saving and improving the land’s productivity. Considering the possible trade-offs with water availability in large-scale afforestation, our study predicted the impacts on water balance components in the lower reaches of the Amudarya River to facilitate afforestation planning using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The land-use scenarios used for modeling analysis considered the afforestation of 62% and 100% of marginally productive croplands under average and low irrigation water supply identified from historical land-use maps. The results indicate a dramatic decrease in the examined water balance components in all afforestation scenarios based largely on the reduced irrigation demand of trees compared to the main crops. Specifically, replacing current crops (mostly cotton) with trees on all marginal land (approximately 663 km2) in the study region with an average water availability would save 1037 mln m3 of gross irrigation input within the study region and lower the annual drainage discharge by 504 mln m3. These effects have a considerable potential to support irrigation water management and enhance drainage functions in adapting to future water supply limitations.

The promise of precision medicine is based on the use of new technologies to better characterize patients by defining individuals in the areas of genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and other aspects of biologic variability. Wise application of modern technology can similarly transform health visits with patients, allowing for better characterization of the patient’s individual life circumstances than possible in a traditional office visit. The use of, and experience with, telemedicine have increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients and clinicians report high satisfaction with telemedicine, and the quality of communication and patient-centeredness experienced in this setting are both rated highly. In this article, we explore the benefits offered by telemedicine in facilitating personalized care with particular focus on telemedicine delivered by video platforms. We propose strategies and skills specific to the effective implementation of personalized telemedicine, drawing on literature in patient-centered communication and home visits. While traditional in-person office visits continue to offer important opportunities such as thorough physical examination and the potential for enhanced non-verbal communication, telemedicine offers many important advantages that can facilitate the process of getting to know the patient as a person.

Schon heute muss die Strukturlayoutplanung Innovationen und Unsicherheiten in Form von mehr Varianten, abgestimmt in sehr kurzer Zeit, durch die Einbeziehung von weiteren Know-how-Trägern berücksichtigen. Neue Herausforderungen, wie die Planung der Batteriefertigungen, müssen schnell und intuitiv gelöst werden. Einen Beitrag dafür liefert dieser Artikel.   Future technologies in automotive mobility as well as new factory and logistic concepts are changing the framework in car production. Innovations and uncertainties (e. g. the impact of new technologies) have to be taken in consideration for the factory of the future. New tasks, such as planning the assembly of batteries, need to be solved fast and intuitively. This paper presents an approach to this topic.

Abstract:This paper presents some results obtained from a wider research on critical issues related to “adolescents and new technologies”. Given the complexity of factors that surrounds the lives of our adolescents in modern society and the complexity of society itself, we considered it interesting to investigate ICTs and its influence on our adolescents. ICTs are supposed to contribute in an important way to improve our quality of living, both in the personal environment and in the professional environment, although in some cases we are seeing that this is not the case. For this reason, and in the context of Secondary Education, it is important part to know how pupils use ICTs and how ICTs are employed in education. Specifically, the data analyzed are related to the usage of social networks by students of ESO and 1º Bachelor in Cantabria.Resumen:En este trabajo se presentan algunos de los resultados obtenidos en una investigación más amplia sobre aspectos cruciales relativos a “los adolescentes y las nuevas tecnologías”. Dada la complejidad de factores que rodea la vida de nuestros jóvenes en la sociedad actual, igualmente compleja, que nos ha tocado vivir; nos pareció relevante investigar el tema de las TIC y su influencia en la vida de nuestros adolescentes. Se supone que las nuevas tecnologías contribuyen de manera importante a mejorar nuestra calidad de vida, tanto en lo personal como en lo profesional, aunque en algunos casos estamos viendo que no siempre es así. Por ello, cuando nos referimos a los alumnos de la Educación Secundaria entendemos que lo importante, es saber cómo las utilizan y cómo las TIC intervienen en la formación de la persona. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on research that aims to make knowledge, and in particular know-how, more easily accessible to both academic and industrial communities, as well as to the general public. The paper proposes a novel approach to map out know-how information, so all knowledge stakeholders are able to contribute to the knowledge and expertise accumulation, as well as using that knowledge for research and applying expertise to address problems. Design/methodology/approach This research followed a design science approach in which mapping of the know-how information was done by the research team and then tested with graduate students. During this research, the mapping approach was continuously evaluated and refined, and mapping guidelines and a prototype tool were developed. Findings Following an evaluation with graduate students, it was found that the know-how maps produced were easy to follow, allowed continuous evolution, facilitated easy modification through provided modularity capabilities, further supported reasoning about know-how and overall provided adequate expressiveness. Furthermore, we applied the approach with various domains and found that it was a good fit for its purpose across different knowledge domains. Practical implications This paper argues that mapping out know-how within research and industry communities can further improve resource (knowledge) utilization, reduce the phenomena of “re-inventing the wheel” and further create linkage across communities. Originality/value With the qualities mentioned above, know-how maps can both ease and support the increase of access to expert knowledge to various communities, and thus, promote re-use and expansion of knowledge for various purposes. Having an explicit representation of know-how further encourages innovation, as knowledge from various domains can be mapped, searched and reasoned, and gaps can be identified and filled.

<p>The increase of the metropolises stresses the urban areas and intensive planning works is necessary. Therefore, the development of new technologies and methodologies able to explore the subsoil and manage its resources in urban areas becomes an important source in terms of saving time and money. In the last decade, a new subdiscipline in the Applied Geophysics started: Urban Geophysics (Lapenna, 2017). Urban Geophysics analyzes the contribute, in terms of limits and potentialities, that geophysical methodologies can give for providing useful information about the subsoil, environment, buildings and civil infrastructures and supporting the public administrations in planning interventions in urban scenarios.</p><p>This work introduces a laboratory test, that was performed at the Hydrogeosite CNR-IMAA laboratory of Marsico Nuovo (Basilicata region, Italy). The test consisted in a multisensor geophysical application on an analogue engineering model. Thanks to the possibility to work in laboratory conditions, a detailed knowledge of the structure was available, providing great advantages for assess the capability of the geophysical methodologies for analyze engineering issues, regarding the characterization of the infrastructural critical zone placed at the interface soil-structure. For this purpose, geoelectrical and electromagnetic methodologies, including Cross hole Electrical Resistivity Tomography and Ground Penetrating Radar, were used to characterize the geometry of the foundation structures and the disposition of the rebar for the reinforced concrete frame. Finally, new geophysical approaches were applied in order to define the corrosion rate of reinforcement.</p>

This research is done to plan rainwater harvesting so that it can be used as an alternative water source on the campus B UNJ so it is expected to reduce groundwater use that can cause a puddle. The method used in the PAH development plan is a water balance method. This method compares the level of demand with water volume that can be accommodated or the availability of water (supply). Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the potential for rainwater in the FIO office building A was 1773.95 m3 , FMIPA building B was 1904.62 m3 , the FIO lecture building C was 1613.21 m3 and the Ulul Albab mosque was 512.16 m3 . Potential rainwater obtained cistern PAH capacity of 200 m3 by saving water needs by 30% in building A FIO, building B FMIPA, and building C FIO. The capacity of the PAH cistern is 80 m3 by saving the water needs of the Ulul Albab mosque by 13.3%. Placement of the PAH cistern under the ground with a ground water system. Ecodrainage application by utilizing the PAH system can reduce drainage load by 0.158 m3 /second or 13.9% from rainwater runoff.
