The uncertainties surrounding climate change are creating challenges for policy makers with regard to investments in water-related infrastructure. A promising new approach is the adaptation pathways approach. This article contributes to this approach by introducing an institutional and socio-cultural perspective. It presents an analytical framework to evaluate the necessary institutional and socio-cultural conditions, uncovering challenges with regard to the governance of adaptation and of keeping options open for the future. The framework has been applied to the case study of fresh water supply in the Netherlands. Based on an institutional and socio-cultural analysis, the feasibility, flexibility and governance of adaptation strategies are discussed. Reflecting on the presented framework, critical issues are addressed with regard to the further development of the adaptation pathways approach.

If the morphology and the studies on the urban form are closely related to the social aspects and are responsibility of architects and policy makers, the issue becomes even more complicated if we're talking about cities with a high number of buildings under public ownership or urban fragments with important dimensions. In Italy there is a very rare case of recent foundation that is the neighborhood Monteruscello in the city of Pozzuoli. Built in the 80s to face the bradisism events that had made uninhabitable other city areas, Monteruscello today, for its dimension, can be considered a "city in the city" where the 90% of the buildings are under public ownership. The neighborhood's project is designed by Agostino Renna who had built Monteruscello through analogical composition with fragments of spatial references of other places and cities. The architect has put in the neighborhood - mainly made up of rural areas - its urban model adapting it to the specific geography of places. During the years the neighborhood has never built an own identity becoming one of the most degraded areas of the city. The paper deals with the issue of urban form and morphology today starting from the study of Monteruscello - as imagined by its creator through the critical issues that underlie its design - and through an experimental design of a new agro-urban landscape for the neighborhood that involves three hectares of public green spaces - now abandoned - turning them into agricultural lands to urban use and growth resource. This paper presents the concept of character education in pesantren which gives valuable contributions to the success of moral development for students. It also offers a different paradigm in developing the concept of character building in educational institution. This article is inspired by the lack of effective character learning in a variety of formal educational institutions. Hence, the schools which succeed in instilling character education can be used as a reference to develop character education. This study focuses on character education model developed by pesantren and offers an alternative perspective of the development of character education in Indonesia. This study adopts a qualitative research approach and uses a case study design. The study shows that the model of character education in pesantren is carried out through a multi-disciplinary approach so as to provide maximum results for the development of character education. This study suggests that the Total Moral Quality (TMQ) is the further development of Thomas Lickona’s concept of character education of moral modeling, moral knowing, moral feeling and moral habituation and is applicable in the school.

Abstract This article engages in theoretical reflections on an anthropology of Confucianism by tackling two critical issues: the visibility of the Confucian tradition in modern times and the conceptualization of “popular Confucianism” in anthropological terms. Through a case study of an ethnographic document about Agama Khonghucu, as the Confucian religion is known in Indonesia, the article argues that, via the construction of an anthropology of Confucianism, scholars can better understand the customs, behaviors, and values of Chinese communities under their specific sociopolitical and cultural conditions across the globe.

Abstract Benchmarking the analysis of countries' performance in terms of sustainable development helps to understand the success factors of countries that over perform and to target priority issues of others with lower performance. However, assessing sustainable development comes with methodological challenges, including indicator standardization, aggregation and weighting. Our study significantly contributes to the measure of sustainable development by providing a new approach based on an extended Hellwig method. After describing the main limitations of existing methodologies, this paper's aim is twofold. First, we show that the proposed analytical framework allows for comparing the sustainable performance of EU countries on the national level. The extended Hellwig method takes into consideration EU targets and/or national targets in building patterns of development. Second, this framework is tested as a part of the evaluation of the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy in the education area. The results obtained using the extended Hellwig method were compared with those obtained by means of the Education Index, TOPSIS and Ward technique. Our analysis showed the significant disparities in the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy recommendations in the education area in 2015.

Transforming university teachers’ way of thinking about assessment seems to be critical for assisting success of higher education reforms, especially when it comes to greater internationalisation of national and institutional policies. One of the critical issues for aligning strategies adopted for a master program is the need to develop critically reflective approaches to assessing a master’s thesis. In this article, we present a case study of an assessment conception for a master’s thesis in master’s programmes delivered at Northern Arctic Federal University (NArFU) (Arkhangelsk, Russia). The discussion is offered for two main reasons. Firstly, the case study could be of interest for other educators and programme developers who are involved in the process. Secondly, we offer a set of places to look for answers in search of promoting validity, reliability and fairness of internationally acknowledged quality of education. The results of the research may serve to inform the education policy-makers about initiatives to be taken for establishing a culture of assessment and continuous improvement within this sphere.

This article synthesizes the results of a research on the emergence of organizational forms within solidary economy in Brazil. Discussion on solidary economy highlights the problem of how to apprehend its typical interstitial organizing phenomena. The response is given with the aid of Victor Turner’s anthropological concepts ‘liminality’ and ‘communitas’—or ‘anti-structure’—which define the ontology of social interstices. After contextualization to contemporary capitalism and to the field of organizational studies, a new approach to the solidary economy organizing process is proposed through the theoretical construct called liminal organization. The analytical framework is applied in a case study of a company taken over by workers. Empirical evidence shows that liminal organizations live in contradiction as organizing processes in which structure and anti-structure are permanently tensioned.

Investigating the replication of microcredit methodologies in Brazil, this paper seeks to explore the conditions under which microfinance and microcredit, two “financial inclusion” strategies, are likely to enhance social inclusion. A qualitative case study was conducted focusing the path of CrediAmigo, a Brazilian microfinance institution (MFI). This study is probably the first to provide an integrated perspective on critical issues concerning the replication of microcredit methodologies in Brazil. The findings may support MFI managers and policy makers in taking steps to facilitate the expansion of microfinance across Brazil.
