In the process of high expansion of drainage systems and land cultivation, most natural watercourses in Lithuania were converted into drainage channels. They were deprived of all natural riparian vegetation and abiotic conditions that kept up biodiversity, diminished erosion and deflation, induced self-purification of water etc. Thus the re-naturalization of drainage channels is essential. Consequently, to determine the possibilities to combine re-naturalization processes in channels with their function-ability it was examined the tendencies of woody vegetation (WV) spreading and the hydraulic calculation formulas estimating the performance of overgrown channels as water recipients were suggested. As the study results showed, self-restoration of WV was most progressive in forest and outskirt channels. In the field channels WV expansion takes place as well. However, it depends on the distance from a forest, i.e. WV density decreases sharply from 1.17 stems m−2 to background level (c. 0.26 stems m−2) within the space of 300 m. In the paper there is some positive influence of WV cover in view to drainage channel maintenance discussed referring to the results of former studies as well as the publications of other authors. It includes the prevention of bottom silting as well as slope erosion and slide. The formulas estimating conductivity of overgrown channels are based on the balance of forces occurring on the boundaries of overgrown strips of a stream: resistance of tree stems, friction on the slopes, shear stresses that appear when two streams with different velocities are in contact and the horizontal component of the gravity force causing water movement. Some methods of WV cover abundance control are discussed when having assumed self- or artificial restoration of WV in channels to be maintained as recipients is projected.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of positioning unknown ingredients either with the presence or absence of framing; both are common in marketplace (e.g. Secret® deodorant visibly claims “aluminum chlorohydrate” while Crystal® promotes “no aluminum chlorohydrate”). Design/methodology/approach The authors used three scenario-based experiments. The participants were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk online panel and randomly assigned to a variety of experimental conditions. Findings Initial study results show that consumers have more positive evaluations and purchase intentions for absence positioning than presence positioning, because absence positioning induces greater perceptions of protection. In the second study, these results are extended using multiple ingredients, along with competitor products; they show that absence positioning leads to better evaluations than presence positioning and replicate the mediation effect that was found earlier. In the final study, through manipulating participants’ regulatory focus, the authors show that absence-positioned ingredients have a higher choice share when consumers are in the prevention mindset. Conversely, when customers are in promotion mindset and looking for better performance, presence positioning of ingredients seems to have higher choice shares. Research limitations/implications The research has implications for product development, promotions, labeling and packaging, showing the positive influence of absence positioning of unknown ingredients. Practical implications Marketers may emphasize the absence of unknown ingredients in their products instead of following a strategy that highlights the inclusion of them. Originality/value To the authors’ extant knowledge, this research is an initial attempt to understand how consumers react to promotion of product ingredients. In addition, it contributes to the literature in unknown attributes by showing that absence positioning of certain types of ingredients is perceived better than presence framing of them.

The viscous micropump consists of a cylinder placed eccentrically inside a microchannel, where the rotor axis is perpendicular to the channel axis. When the cylinder rotates, a net force is transferred to the fluid because of the unequal shear stresses on the upper and lower surfaces of the rotor. Consequently, this causes the surrounding fluid in the channel to displace toward the microchannel outlet. The simplicity of the viscous micropump renders it ideal for micropumping; however, previous studies have shown that its performance is still less than what is required for various applications. The performance of the viscous micropump, in terms of flow rate and pressure capabilities, may be enhanced by implementing more than one rotor into the configuration either horizontally or vertically oriented relative to each other. This is analogous to connecting multiple pumps in parallel or in series. The present study will numerically investigate the performance of various configurations of the viscous micropumps with multiple rotors, namely, the dual-horizontal rotor, triple-horizontal rotor, symmetrical dual-vertical rotor, and eight-shaped dual-vertical rotor. The development of drag-and-lift forces with time, as well as the viscous resisting torque on the cylinders were studied. In addition, the corresponding drag, lift, and moment coefficients were calculated. The flow pattern and pressure distribution on the cylinders’ surfaces are also included in the study. Results show that the symmetrical dual-vertical rotor configuration yields the best efficiency and generates the highest flow rate. The steady-state performance of the single-stage micropump was compared to the available experimental and numerical data and found to be in very good agreement. This work provides a foundation for future research on the subject of fluid phenomena in viscous micropumps.

Objective: There is a necessity to determine an approach to the development of train traffic control theory at suburban sections, on the basis of the analysis of conventional methods of train traffic control and service situations. Methods: Simulation methods, design theory and train traffic graphing were applied in the study. Results: The possibility of developing the conventional method of commuter service organization on railroads was demonstrated by means of a new data modeling approach, underlying the system of traffic handling capacity of suburban districts. It was shown, that the basis of such a technology is a train schedule modification. It was established that the schemes on selecting schedule modification, compiled in accordance with the standard methodology, may in some cases present the solutions different from conventional. It was concluded that an unexpected result might be achieved in case of simultaneous alteration of both the initial length of suburban zones and initial number of zone trains, that is zone schedule modeling, and elements of traffic schedule within regions, assigned in accordance with its periods and called configurations. The necessity in determination and modeling of configurations was justified by practical demand in traffic volume account of different types of trains at suburban sections. The simplest example of schedule modification and capacity values response to mutual position of trains and schedule elements in configurations was introduced. Practical importance: New theoretical conclusions, obtained as a result of the analysis of suburban areas’ length modeling results, the number of zone suburban trains and their position in configurations along with freight and passenger trains, provide justification of and scientific background for efforts of creating a new methodology of train traffic control at suburban sections. Such a methodology, built on the principles of zone schedule integrated modeling and the introduced traffic schedule configurations, makes it possible to considerably increase the flexibility of commuter service organization, achieve the reduction of passenger time spent on a trip and train expectation with guaranteed execution of the fixed schedule. According to the conducted analysis, the introduced approach may have positive influence on the capacity of suburban sections as well.

Background. Recent researches points out that musical training might have a positive influence on human cognitive domain and working memory improvements are thought to mediate this influence. However, there is some discrepancy among results of researches dealing with working memory testing of musicians and non-musicians. Materials and Methods. The  participants were the  students who for 10–15 years had been engaged in regular musical practice (musicians) and their peers who had no previous musical experience (non-musicians). A computerized working memory test for letters, digits and shapes with successive presentation of stimuli was applied in the current study. Results. Musicians and non-musicians did not differ in the  overall number of mistakes and latency of responses made in all subtests for letters, digits and shapes. The left hand made significantly more mistakes than the right one in both groups, but this regularity was more typical of non-musicians. The right hand responded faster than the left one while doing all subtests in both groups, but such a motor asymmetry was more evident for nonmusicians. Musicians mostly did not demonstrate an increase in latency of responses with task complexity growing from set to set of stimuli, while non-musicians did. Conclusions. The  efficiency of working memory test performance did not differ among musicians and non-musicians. Musicians have tighter interhemispheric cooperation during the memory test and that was indicated by a lesser motor asymmetry. Musicians have almost equal latency of responses regardless of task complexity, while non-musicians require more time for responding to stimuli during growing task complexity, probably because of using different search patterns in working memory or tighter interhemispheric cooperation.

Background and aim: There is an increasing body of evidence that physical exercise may have a positive effect on people’s mental condition and well-being. Numerous study results indicate that physical activity helps in the treatment of depression and anxiety. This allows for a conclusion that sport – to a great extent – influences not only people’s physical aspects, but also their psyche. Sedentary lifestyle, time pressure and stress that accompanies people at an increasingly younger age contribute both to higher incidence of numerous civilisation diseases and to problems with mental health. The purpose of the study was to verify whether individuals practicing sports manifest better well-being than non-training individuals. Methods: A general interview was conducted with 80 students (40 individuals practicing sports and 40 individuals not practicing sports at all), whereupon they were requested to complete the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale questionnaire. Results: The individuals practicing sport exhibit greater well-being than the subjects from the control group. It was also demonstrated that the males in the study group exhibit greater wellbeing than the females from the same group However, no findings were made that longer duration of a single training session, its frequency or the time when a given person started practicing sport had any influence on his/her well-being. Conclusions: Practicing sports has a positive influence on people’s well-being. Physical activity should be promoted from as early an age as possible to minimise the risk of numerous diseases in the future, including those affecting mental health.

This study explores one of the most active and productive educational methods; hence, this stylistic phenomenon has its importance in embellishing discourse and speech with respect to diverse opinions. Nowadays, societies love discussions and debating especially Middle-East ones. A simple discussion may lead to a different topic and escalates into a hot debate that may be accompanied by verbal and physical conflicts rather than tolerance and the spirit of acceptance. Active dialogues and politeness in selecting words are evidences of the nations’ awareness, as they are considered to be the effective methods of dialogues and the advancement of society. This paper is divided into an introduction, definitions of terms and three sections. Firstly, the dialogues in Surah Maryam. Secondly, the etiquettes of rhetoric and talks in Surah Maryam. Thirdly, the applied educational milestone from the methods of dialogue and their etiquettes in the Surah. The importance of this research shows the fact that the dialogue styles and their etiquettes are the most important pillars in the process of people’s communication, and the convergence of views among opponents and disputants. The dialogue and its etiquettes provide the most appropriate conditions for conflict resolution, compromise and consensus which reflect positive influence on human relationships among community individuals. The main objective of the study is to highlight the ways to strengthen brotherhood and human cooperation. This method and its etiquettes can be also used to renounce clash and conflicts among people and community; besides, it can be a good attempt to replace those negative points with taking the best of opinions through spreading the causes of harmony, love, goodness and peace. The most important study results are: adhering the rules of a proper dialogue to change of many nowadays conflicts into a peaceful dialogue, happiness, reduce rivalry or quarrels, and removing many obstacles in front of the people and community.
