This paper examines customer’s perception towards product quality of automotive SMEs operating in the Durban metropolitan areas and identifies how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa (SA) contribute significantly to job creation, wealth, social stability, economic growth and reduction of poverty. Product quality of automotive SMEs requires serious attention, as it can have ecological environmental impact leading to the negative economic growth contributed by the industry. The study is aimed to understand the factors affecting automotive SMEs in order to help entrepreneurs to improve product quality and examining the customer’s perception towards product quality. The study was conducted in Durban metropolitan areas using the survey method. The sample size of the study was 120 SMEs selected using convenience sampling with respondents completing the questionnaire. A combined method of both quantitative and qualitative techniques was employed, while the analysis of data was done using the Statistics Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) version 23.0. The findings of the study revealed that lack of managerial skills and development negatively compromises product quality of the automotive sector. Also the results revealed that the absence of financial support from financial institutions delays the improvement of stock in the business, as this is an obstacle resulting in the unsustainability of the SMEs. Further research with larger samples and the consideration of other cities is recommended.

Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, Indonesia's economic growth in the first quarter of 2020 has fallen to 2.97; it recorded -5.35 in the second quarter and -3.49 in the third quarter (Mulyani, 2020). This decline in growth has undoubtedly shaken micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). According to the Ministry of Cooperatives for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (2020), 18.83% of MSMEs suffered hampered production, 22.9% experienced decreased demand, 18.87% faced difficulties in obtaining raw materials and 20.01% encountered hampered distribution. MSMEs in Indonesia contribute 60.4% of GDP and 97% of employment (Economic Indicator, 2019). However, they were severely affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. Therefore, examining the performance of MSMEs during the period of COVID 19 pandemic is crucial. Moreover, the pandemic has resulted chaotic economic conditions and changes in social order. Economic chaos and changes in social order could either strengthen or weaken the resilience of MSMEs. According to Tencer & Cadoso (2014), innovation arises because of chaos and unhealthy market domination. Ivanus & Repanovici (2016) mentioned that MSMEs need to have clear innovation strategy, adjust to market demand, make changes in production costs and show product quality in order to increase the economic growth. As supported by Christensen et al. (2018), MSMEs innovate to ensure their business continuity is maintained. Thus, innovation is particularly important for business survival in the era of Covid 19 pandemic. However, Martinez-Vergara and Vall-Pasola (2020) found that some businesses did not innovate. As such, there is a need to scrutinize further on the influence of business owners' characteristics on innovation and its effect on performance. Keywords: Characteristics, Innovation, Micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Performance

Approximately 90% of companies are Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Their importance in the economy lies in the fact that they account for almost 60% of the jobs in the world, number which could be greater in developing countries. All these companies have an environmental impact that is almost imperceptible when observed individually, but if observed and analyzed as a whole, this impact is actually relevant. It is therefore important for these companies to include the concept of sustainability within their processes, which is difficult given the informal way they have managed their activities and processes. On the other hand, there are two paradigms that rule the concept of sustainability, weak sustainability and strong sustainability. As it will be presented in this chapter, both concepts are opposed and companies are normally oriented towards weak sustainability, because they are more interested in economic growth than in caring for the environment.

A survey method was used to gather data from 200 SME/Entrepreneurial officers and Managers from five selected local government in Nigeria namely; Ijebu North, Yewa South, Sagamu, Odeda and Ogun Waterside Local government. Data was collected with a structured questionnaire and analyzed with several descriptive statistics to identify the perception of the roles of SMEs in Nigeria. The results of the study therefore reveals that the most common constraints hindering small and medium scale business growth in Nigeria are lack of financial support, poor management, corruption, lack of training and experience, poor infrastructure, insufficient profits, and low demand for product and services.  Hence, it therefore recommends that Government should as matter of urgency assist prospective entrepreneurs to have access to finance and necessary information relating to business opportunities, modern technology, raw materials, market, plant and machinery which would enable them to reduce their operating cost and be more efficient to meet the market competitions.

This study aims to provide an understanding of the importance of the SME sector in the socio-economic development of Kosovo and examine in particular the influence of internal factors on them. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with Kosovo SMEs through an anonymous online questionnaire. This study confirms that all internal factors - managerial skills and competencies, business experience, access to finance and technological capabilities, depending on a period, have a significant impact on the performance of SMEs. While access to finance is considered as a major challenge, technology is considered to help improve business performance. However, results revealed that poor managerial skills and competencies, despite having a significant impact on the performance of SMEs, they were also related to access in finance and technological skills, making it difficult to run a business. Training and empowerment of SME managers in key business areas can be an opportunity to improve business performance.

Although SMEs have contributed to economic growth, in their development there have been various problems. The problem faced by SMEs in Gresik Regency is that they do not understand the use of preservatives food and beverage that are safe for health and limited market access. In solving the problems faced by these SMEs, the community service team transferred knowledge and technology through workshops and mentoring. Workshop material includes methods of processing and preserving food, types of natural preservatives, and ways to promote, market, and sell products through online marketing media (e-commerce). While mentoring was carried out after the workshop was completed. With the completion of community service activities, it is expected that SMEs can increase product durability and product quality by using natural preservatives that are safe for health, and SMEs are able to run and manage e-commerce applications that have been developed.

The market of ready-to-eat salads is experiencing a noticeable growth in Europe. Since they are intended to be consumed without additional treatments, these ready-to-eat products are associated with a high microbiological risk. The aim of this work was to evaluate the microbiological quality and safety of ready-to-eat salads sold in widespread supermarket chains in Lazio, Italy, at the packaging date, during shelf-life and during home-refrigeration. The study also aimed to determine the differences between low, medium, and high cost products. Salmonella spp., L. monocytogenes were chosen as safety indicators as specified by European regulations while total aerobic mesophilic bacteria and Escherichia coli were chosen as quality indicators as suggested by national guidelines. Analyses were performed following the ISO standards and in parallel, for the evaluation of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, with an alternative colorimetric system, the Micro Biological Survey method, in order to propose a simple, affordable and accurate alternative for testing the microbiological quality of products, especially suitable for small and medium enterprises and on-site analyses. The study revealed high, unsatisfactory, total bacterial loads in all analyzed samples at the packaging date and expiring date and a very high prevalence of Salmonella spp. (67%) regardless of the selected varieties and cost-categories; L. monocytogenes was instead not recovered aligning with the results obtained in other studies.
