In a retrospective survey of patients with fractures and dislocations attending the Accident department of a District General hospital, comparison was made between patients with fractures and dislocations in the hand and fractures and dislocations of other sites. Patients with hand injuries accounted for 28% of the total patients seen. They were more likely than other fracture patients to be male and between the ages of 10 and 40 years. Almost a quarter of hand injuries attended on Monday. Leisure activities outside the home formed the commonest aetiological factor. Only 66% of patients with hand injuries attended the Accident department within 24 hours of injury. The little finger was the commonest site of injury. This survey emphasizes the differences between hand injuries and injuries of other sites, identifies the risk factors for hand injuries and has implications for the management of hand injuries in a District General Hospital.

SummaryA 10-year retrospective survey of 204 elective rigid oesophagoscopic examinations in the ENT unit of a District General Hospital is reported. One Hundred and Forty Five (71 per cent) were normal and there was marked preponderance of normal endoscopy in patients under 60 years old. Clinical examination was usually unhelpful but barium studies were found to complement oesophagoscopy in reaching a diagnosis. There were six complications of oesophagoscopy, two following normal examinations.

Abstract: To date malaria is still a public health problem in Indonesia, because some areas are still endemic. Malaria in North Sulawesi are included in the top ten diseases prevalent in the health centers and hospitals. Some type C hospitals including the district hospitals and some private hospitals play an important role in treating patients with malaria and its complications. Data of malaria patients in hospitals is only obtained from several hospitals in Manado and Minahasa. The purpose of this research is to get a profile of malaria patients hospitalized at General Hospital of Bitung regency during the period of January 2008 until December 2009. The research method used is a retrospective survey of records from malaria patients' medical records at the General Hospital of Bitung regency. The collected data were then processed, arranged in a frequency distribution table, and discussed according to: age, sex, occupation, residence, clinical symptoms, laboratory examination, complications, treatment and diagnosis entered. This study describes that the accuracy and precision of handling malaria patients in this hospital is still low, as seen in the type of treatment, which shows that the use of antimalarial drugs are only about 6-37% is given correctly and there are about 10-10% of its use is still incorrect. Also, the clinical diagnosis of malaria was only found in 60 cases (36%) positive plasmodium and the most entry diagnosis was febrile observation. Key words: Malaria, plasmodium, a retrospective survey.

AbstractBrainstem Evoked Responses have been used in the Audiology Unit in Crosshouse Hospital since it opened in 1984, and have now come to form a vital asset in our assessment and diagnosis of the hearing threshold in children. This particular survey is a retrospective study of the BERA used in determining the hearing threshold in children. The survey has been limited to the BERA performed on children from January, 1985 until December, 1986.

A retrospective survey was undertaken to evaluate the prescribing practices of medical staff in a District General Hospital in light of the Consensus Statement by the Royal College of Psychiatrists on the use of high dose antipsychotics (1993). Two per cent of 247 patients were prescribed a higher than recommended dose of antipsychotic. None of these cases had been prescribed ‘supra-BNF doses of antipsychotic on a regular basis, but with the addition of ‘as required’ (PRN) medication the recommended dose was exceeded. In only one patient was the high dosage administered. A further analysis of these patients is made.

The Type I simple cold block device was described by Bullivant and Ames in 1966 and represented the product of the first successful effort to simplify the equipment required to do sophisticated freeze-cleave techniques. Bullivant, Weinstein and Someda described the Type II device which is a modification of the Type I device and was developed as a collaborative effort at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The modifications reduced specimen contamination and provided controlled specimen warming for heat-etching of fracture faces. We have now tested the Mass. General Hospital version of the Type II device (called the “Type II-MGH device”) on a wide variety of biological specimens and have established temperature and pressure curves for routine heat-etching with the device.
