Abstract Three mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) with 0.5 wt% of magnesium oxide (MgO) and 6 wt% of molybdenum (Mo) were prepared by the pressureless sintering process, and the friction and wear behavior of the ceramic composite were studied against the alumina disc. Tribological tests were carried out both at room temperature as well as at an elevated temperature (500 °C). The result revealed that a substantial reduction of ∼50% in the friction coefficient and ∼31% reduction in the wear rate were achieved while 6 wt% Mo was added into the 3Y-TZP matrix operational at 500 °C. No significant tribological influence was observed with the addition of Mo at the normal operating temperature. The minimum coefficient of friction and low specific wear rate were achieved because of the formation of MoO3 in between the mating surfaces at elevated temperature. The worn surfaces were characterized by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The formation of MoO3 phases was identified by wear debris analysis which was performed with the help of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of a cleaning agent and priming on the bond strength (BS) of a resin cement (RC) to zirconia ceramics after 24 h and 1 year of water-storage. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six Katana and 56 ZirCAD zirconia ceramic plates were prepared and each zirconia brand was divided into four groups (n = 14): (1) untreated; (2) treated with Ivoclean cleaning agent; (3) treated with Monobond Plus coupling agent; (4) treated with Ivoclean + Monobond Plus. Cleaning and coupling agents were applied to zirconia following the manufacturers' instructions. The RC was manipulated, inserted into tubes (0.75 mm diameter/1 mm height) that were positioned on the zirconia surfaces and light activated. Specimens were tested after 24 h and 1 year of water storage. A shear load was applied to the base of the RC cylinders (until failure. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 5%). Results: No significant difference in BS was noted between zirconia ceramics, except when the combination of cleaning and coupling agents was used. This combination increased the BS for Katana zirconia. One year of water storage leads to a decrease in BS for all experimental groups. Conclusion: The combination of cleaning agent and priming can yield higher BS for Katana at 24 h. BS to zirconia ceramics reduced approximately 50% after 1 year.

Objective: To evaluate the colouration of zirconia ceramic by adding two kinds of rare earth oxides. Methods: Added different concentrations of Fe2O3and CeO2in tetragonal zirconia poly crystals stabilized with 3Y-TZP powder compacted at 200MPa using cold isostatic pressure, and fully sinter. The chromaticity of sintered bodies was measured with spectrophotometer. Results: self-colored zirconia by two kinds of rare earth oxides: The lightness of zirconia by adding cerium oxides was about 85 and a* decreased slightly. The color shifted to more yellow-green color. The chroma of the ceramics became more intensity, the lightness decreased with the increasing of the content of ferrum oxides and the color change to red-yellow direction. Conclusion: Zirconia ceramic could be colorized by Fe2O3and CeO2.

The purpose of this study was to study the surface characteristics of the dental 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia) ceramic treated by machining process and analysis what impact on the mechanical properties of the 3Y-TZP dental restorations. Dense core ceramic discs were made of 3Y-TZP. The samples were partially sintered to get part strength after uniaxial pressure moulding. The partially sintering green body could be treated by grinding, incising and milling and incising to simulate the CAD-CAM (computer aided design/computer aidedmanufacturing) process in dentistry. The partially sintering samples were then sintered to achieve full density. The dense sintered ceramics were also treated by grinding and incising to simulate the dental restorations adjusting process in dental clinic. The both surface of thespecimens were studied with an optical microscope and field emission SEM. Bulges were observed on the surface of the sample after uniaxial pressure moulding process. The defects due to partially sintered green body milling process were different from incising process in size and shape. Groves are observed on the surfaces of the samples after grinding process. The conclusions were that (i) machining of the final sintered dental 3Y-TZP ceramic brought more critical damage than the machining of partly-sintered green-bodies; (ii) the milling process ofthe partially sintered green-body brought less damage to the 3Y-TZP samples than the incising process.

Porous ceramics are of great interest due to their numerous potential applications. The objective of the present investigation was to produce porous alumina with 3 mol % yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP). This material will be used in cooling systems of satellites. To obtain the porous ceramics the direct foaming technique was used. This method is based on the preparation of a stable foam to which a slurry of alumina and zirconia is added. The mixture is then vigorously stirred for incorporation of air. The sintered ceramics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, mercury porosimetry and thermal conductivity. The tests performed with the porous alumina-zirconia ceramic composite obtained by this method, showed low thermal conductivity values, high porosity and uniform microstructure with 20–100 µm open pores. The results show that the alumina-zirconia composites tested in this study have a potential for application in loop heat pipes of cooling systems of satellites.
