This chapter considers the role of international oil companies (IOCs) as global political actors with significant economic and political power. In doing so, we weigh the ethical costs and benefits for individuals, companies, and states alike. Using the concepts of “corporate social responsibility” (CSR) and “corporate citizenship” as points of departure, we consider the extent to which international oil companies have social and political responsibilities in the countries where they operate and what the host country can do to encourage this sort of behavior. We examine the nature of anticorruption legislation in several of the sending countries (including Norway), and look closely at how the Norwegian national oil company (NOC), Statoil, has navigated these ethical waters.

In this conceptual article, we argue that defining corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) as opposite constructs produces a lack of clarity between responsible and irresponsible acts. Furthermore, we contend that the treatment of the CSR and CSI concepts as opposites de-emphasizes the value of CSI as a stand-alone construct. Thus, we reorient the CSI discussion to include multiple aspects that current conceptualizations have not adequately accommodated. We provide an in-depth exploration of how researchers define CSI and both identify and analyze three important gray zones between CSR and CSI: (a) the role of harm and benefit, (b) the role of the actor and intentionality, and (c) the role of rectification. We offer these gray zones as factors contributing to the present lack of conceptual clarity of the term CSI, as a concept in its own right, leading to difficulties that researchers and managers experience in categorizing CSI acts as distinct from CSR.

The wisdom of reviewing corporations, which execute strategic programs of corporate sustainability, as an important actor of political communications in postindustrial society is justified in the article. The basic features of corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and corporate citizenship concepts, the role of strategic communications under international ESG-discourse are outlined. The comparative analyses of Russian companies, participating Global Compact Network, social investments during COVID-19 pandemic is based on case studies, transparent nonfinancial reporting, and expert interviews. Social projects and programs of X5 Retail Group, Severstal’, Norilsk Nikel, United Metallurgic Company were studied. These companies’ basic business activities were established in industrial society. As the result of the research, based on process sociology (N. Elias), mediatization (A. Hepp), and communicative rationality (Ju. Habermas) approaches, the role of corporate citizens in communicative figurations of the network society formation and their subjectivity in political communications acquiring. The focus is made on COVID-19 pandemic influence on communication infrastructures with the studied companies’ stakeholders transformation.

This paper summarises the arguments and counterarguments based on the assumptions of the theory of hate. The study is aimed at testing the mediating role of brand hate elicited in the relationship among the similar competitor offer, corporate social irresponsibility and brand equity. The study sample consisted of 550 participants from the education sector in Pakistan. The methodological tool of the research was structural equation modelling. Purposive sampling technique was used to reach the appropriate respondents for the study. This study was time-lagged conducted in three times data periods: in Time 1 a total of 800 surveys were distributed, out of which 722 were returned from respondents; in Time 2 722 surveys were distributed to same respondents, out of which 600 were returned; in Time 3 600 surveys were again distributed to the same respondents, out of which 550 were returned. The obtained results confirmed the mediating role of brand hate. Herewith, findings revealed that due to similar offers individual feelings such as loss of self-individuality usually developed and be negatively perceived. Thus, it yields to decline in product value. Likewise, corporate social irresponsibility found to have a more negative relationship with brand equity. Results of the current study revealed that negative feelings due to the similarity in competitor offer could stem from diverse sources. Therefore, it could result in an undesired personality self-loss, if a brand represented a similar brand as its competitors ultimately perceived negative and yielded a decline in value of product/service. The current study also unveiled that corporate social irresponsibility is a strong predictor of negative feelings. Corporate social irresponsibility motivates consumers towards brand hate, thus hampering brand equity. According to the mentioned above, there must be careful management of corporate social responsibility to avoid the negative effect on brand equity. In turn, brand hate mediating the relationship between similarity to competitor offer and brand equity alters consumer perception towards a brand. Thus, companies must fulfil consumers’ expectations to minimise brand hate which eventually increases brand equity. This study stands novel and considered as the first attempt to empirically explore the role of similarity to competitor offer and corporate social irresponsibility in eliciting brand hate that could adversely affect on brand equity. The study provided the limitations for future researchers, implications for managers and future directions. PurposeThis study examines the relationship between corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) and firm-level sales and estimates the potentially mitigating role of advertising.Design/methodology/approachTo test their hypotheses, the authors conduct an empirical investigation using a sample of 381 US firms engaging in socially irresponsible behavior.FindingsThe results of this investigation indicate that while sales are negatively impacted during the year of a CSI event, they generally recover in the year immediately following the event. In addition, advertising is shown to mitigate the negative impact of CSI on sales in both the event year and the year immediately following. The authors also consider whether differences exist between CSI firms with and without advertising. From this comparative analysis, it is observed that CSI firms which advertise tend to experience more severe declines in sales. Also, such firms tend to recover from the negative implications of CSI sooner.Originality/valueThis paper provides a novel and empirical approach to assessing the relationship between CSI events and firm-level sales while quantifying the mitigating effects of advertising. Furthermore, the unique contributions and practical findings of this research generate strong support for the significant role advertising can play in helping firms recover from CSI-based brand crisis events and help to establish a promising path for future research.

Although prior research acknowledges the significant role of emotions in response to corporate social irresponsibility (CSI), such research typically examines emotions as mediators that explain how consumers respond to CSI. The present research tests a novel perspective by examining how the expression of anger (vs. sadness) in a company’s apology can influence consumer responses following CSI. Across two experimental studies in different CSI contexts, this research demonstrates that a company’s expression of anger (vs. sadness) enhances consumers’ perceived competence of the company, leading to higher purchase intentions. Furthermore, consumers’ mindset acts as a boundary condition such that the effect is attenuated among consumers with a growth (but not fixed) mindset. Thus, the findings of these studies have important theoretical and practical implications for the CSI literature.

Background: There is growing literature promoting corporate governance mechanisms as important elements that could mitigate the inconclusive findings within the corporate social performance and firm profitability research. A key theoretical assumption within the extant literature that provides support for this proposition is that corporate social performance and firm profitability are organisational outcomes in the presence of good corporate governance.Aim: Firstly, the aim is to re-investigate voluntary social performance disclosure (SPD) and long-term profitability association from the perspective of international standards, using the Global Reporting Initiative G3.1 guidelines. Secondly, to examine the joint moderating effect of board independence and managerial ownership (MO) on the voluntary SPD and profitability nexus.Setting: The South Africa institutional setting, where recent corporate governance regimes require firms to voluntarily make corporate governance related disclosures on both shareholder-and stakeholder-related information is used as the study context.Method: Utilising manually extracted data of listed firms, over the period 2010 to 2015, the generalised least square regression and seemingly unrelated regression (with a 1-year lag as the main independent variable) are used to examine the stated hypotheses.Results: We found a positive association between voluntary SPD and long-term profitability. We also found that the presence of non-executive directors positively moderates the association between voluntary SPD and long-term profitability. Thirdly, the proportion of MO significantly positively moderates the association between voluntary SPD and long-term profitability. Lastly, the complementary role of the presence of non-executive directors and the proportion of MO significantly positively moderates the association between voluntary SPD and long-term profitability.Conclusion: This study finds support for scholarly theoretical arguments that organisational outcomes are largely possible in the presence of good corporate governance, which has a long-term implication for firms’ shareholder wealth maximisation. This study contributes to the ongoing research examining the notion of substitutive versus complementary effects of governance mechanisms, and a growing research literature on corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure from the perspective of international standardisation. This study therefore makes far-reaching contributions to the corporate governance and social responsibility literature in an African context.
