The structure of the Co2MnAl-type Heusler alloy in the form of a melt-spun ribbon was studied by electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), and X-ray diffraction. The melt-spun ribbon consists of a homogeneous single-phase disordered Heusler alloy at the wheel side of the ribbon and an inhomogeneous single-phase alloy, formed by cellular or dendritic growth, at the free surface of the ribbon. Cellular growth causes the formation of an inhomogeneous distribution of the elemental constituents, with a higher Co and Al concentration in the centre of the cells or dendritic arms and a higher concentration of Mn at the cell boundaries. The EBSD analysis shows that the columnar crystals grow in the <111> crystal direction and are declined by about 10° against the direction of the spinning.

Abstract Tin (Sn)-based anodes have drawn extensive attention for magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) owing to their low reaction potentials, high theoretical capacities, and compatibility with conventional electrolytes. However, their poor electrochemical reactivity, sluggish kinetics, and large volume changes have obstructed progresses. Additionally, a clear understanding of the Mg storage chemistry is crucial for the development of high-performance MIBs. Here, we prepared self-supporting In-Sn alloy films with different compositions and phase constitutions via a one-step magnetron co-sputtering. As benchmarked with pure Sn film, the single-phase and biphase In-Sn alloy films effectively trigger the alloying reaction of Sn with Mg and further increasing of In significantly improves the electrochemical reactivity of the In-Sn electrodes. More importantly, operando X-ray diffraction was performed to unveil the magnesiation/demagnesiation mechanisms of the In0.2Sn0.8, In0.2Sn0.8/In3Sn and In3Sn electrodes, showing that In0.2Sn0.8 and In3Sn display different Mg storage mechanisms when existing alone or biphase coexisting. Our findings highlight the significance of the electrode design and mechanism investigations for MIBs.

ABSTRACTThe giant magnetoresistance effect in antiferromagnetically coupled Fe/Cr Multilayers has been attributed to spin dependent scattering at the interfaces between the constituents. One possible source of this spin dependent scattering is chromium impurities in the iron layers due to intermixing at the interfaces. Annealing the films can promote the diffusion of the components, increasing the impurity concentration and therefore the Magnetoresistance. For this study Fe/Cr Multilayers were annealed at several temperatures and for several durations. Annealing at moderate temperatures (∼ 350°C) increases the Magnetoresistance, while higher temperature anneals (∼ 600°C) cause the magnetoresistance to disappear completely. Long anneals at 330°C (> 100 hours) also reduce the Magnetoresistance. VSM Measurements indicate that the antiferromagnetic coupling is reduced in the annealed samples but show no evidence of Magnetically “dead” alloy layers. Low angle X-ray diffraction indicates that the structural effect of annealing is very subtle in comparison to the significant magnetic effect.

AbstractGiant magnetoresistance (GMR), structure, and magnetic properties of sputtered (Co90Fe10 X Å/Ag Y Å) multilayer films have been investigated. Distinct GMR behaviors including granulartype (GGMR) and ‘discontinuous’ (DGMR) are observed which are strongly dependent on the individual CoFe and Ag layer thicknesses; however, standard multilayer GMR and the associated antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling is absent. The multilayer structure, individual layer thicknesses, and growth texture were investigated using high and low angle x-ray diffraction (HXRD & LXRD).
