Palm oil mill effluent (POME), a pollutant produced by the palm oil industry, was treated by the Vetiver system technology (VST). This technology was applied for the first time to treat POME in order to decrease biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In this study, two different concentrations of POME (low and high) were treated with Vetiver plants for 2 weeks. The results showed that Vetiver was able to reduce the BOD up to 90% in low concentration POME and 60% in high concentration POME, while control sets (without plant) only was able to reduce 15% of BOD. The COD reduction was 94% in low concentration POME and 39% in high concentration POME, while control just shows reduction of 12%. Morphologically, maximum root and shoot lengths were 70 cm, the number of tillers and leaves was 344 and 86, and biomass production was 4.1 kg m−2. These results showed that VST was effective in reducing BOD and COD in POME. The treatment in low concentration was superior to the high concentration. Furthermore, biomass of plant can be considered as a promising raw material for biofuel production while high amount of biomass was generated in low concentration of POME.

The delivery of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) by the Palm Oil Mill (POM) of Tanah Putih (60,000 tons / year) and POM Sei Buatan (30,000 tons / year) through the river ship represents 78% of POME's total supply requirement for Biogas Power Plant (BPP) Tandun, Riau. How to get recommendations on routes, ship types and most optimum ship sizes is important. The optimization is done by analyzing the transportation including the investment and then comparison between the modes with some alternative routes on the existing segment, the actual condition limitation and the minimum criterion of total cost. The result of analysis shows that for POME delivery the optimum route is port to port using 1 unit of SPOB vessel with 1,500 ton capacity for each segment. The optimum ship type is Self Propelled Oil Barge (SPOB) when compared to Self Propelled Container Barge (SPCB) and Landing Craft Tank (LCT) and Tank Truck with 8 ton capacity. The total cost for ship procurement is Rp 8,035 billion. The amount of POME delivered can generate 9 million kWh of electrical power. Total revenues from electricity sales and electricity cost savings of the factory amounted to Rp 8.774 billion, resulting in a gross profit of Rp 739 million Keywords: Transportation Analysis, Palm Oil Mill Effluent, Biogas Power Plant

Biomass is a central issue as new material that can be used as a substrate to produce biofuels, it has become global research to replace liquid fossil fuels with alternative renewable and sustainable fossils. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is the potential of Agri-industrial waste to be used as alternative energy with anaerobic digestion of high concentration organic wastewater can be used for bioethanol production to replace food as raw material. Bioethanol can be produced in acidogenic steps in the organic degradation process. In this research, bacterial mixed cultures sourced from bovine rumen as biomass and the substrate used was palm oil mill effluent (POME) with a characteristic COD concentration of 25,600 mg/L, The operation of the reactor is set at pH 5; 6; 7 for 72 hours with the type of anaerobic circulating batch reactor (CBR), measurement of bioethanol products and acidogenesis of samples is carried out every 6 hours. The results showed that the reactor with variations in pH conditions 5 gave the highest efficiency of bioethanol formation in the 12 hour running process, result is 102,94 mg/L with a maximum formation rate of 9,98 mg/L/hour.

The purpose of this research is to determine the optimum production of biogas produced from the tuncated pyramid-shaped modification digester equipment on sedimentation tank and shaped beams on the tank fermentation batch. Pyramid-shaped sedimentation tank aiming for optimal deposition process, While the fermentation tank with beam-shaped used to produce biogas that is optimal. The raw material used is Palm Oil Mill Effluent. In the early stages of process is carried out the sedimentation in the first digester tank at a flow rate of 6 liters/minute and then observing the time stayed for 24 hours. POME flowed into the second digester tank to run into fermentation process by adding active microbial seed to produce biogas. After fermentation is complete, streamed to third digester tank to experience water treatment stage before being released into the environment. COD content test value obtained after the processing of 100 mg/l, while the BOD value is 30.9 mg/l. The percentage of methane gas obtained from starter concentration of 30%, ie 9.82% mol for fermentation time of 10 days, while the fermentation period of 20 days is 15.8 mol%. The production of methane gas obtained for the optimum fermentation period of 30 days ie 33.19% mol. For days 31 through 40, the production of biogas run into highs and caused due to the substrate in the digester began to run out and most of the substrate has not been fermented.

Background: The utilization of microalgae as a renewable energy is an important aspect in solving shortage of future oil reserve in 15 years. One of the renewable energy sources is microalgae biodiesel. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is a wastewater that has a high content of organic materials. These organic materials can be used as growth nutrients for microalgae. Chlorella pyrenoidosa is one of the most potential microalgae used as a raw material for the production of biodiesel since it contains lipids (8%-35%). Methods: Chlorella pyrenoidosa was cultured on the POME medium with concentrations of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%v with addition of synthetic nutrients (urea: TSP) at the ratios of 2:1 ; 1:2 ; 0.5:1 in a 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask, at pH 6-8, aeration using aquarium pumps, and using LED lights (3000 lux). Results: It was revealed that at POME concentration of 25% and with addition of urea: TSP at a ratio of 2:1, the optimum specific growth rate (0.306/day) with the highest number of cells was 3.530 × 107 cells/mL and the highest lipid content was 36% of its dry weight. The removal efficiency of POME could be obtained from the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen, and orthophosphate (P-PO4 ), which was 70, 90.42, and 81.12%, respectively. Conclusion: According to the results, under appropriate culture conditions, C. pyrenoidosa can produce lipids with good use of nutrients contained in the POME medium.

Palm oil processing in palm oil mill produce solid and liquid waste. The liquid waste comesfrom the sterilization and clarification process, that are often called as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME).POME produce methane gas emissions that prompt climate change. Even though it releases a methanegas and has high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) content, POME has the potential to be a source ofenergy for biogas power plants. Then it utilized to produce electricity and supply the needs in factoriesor surrounding areas. This utilization also resulted in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions(specifically those resulted from the release of methane by POME). The purpose of this study was todetermine the amount of emissions produced from palm oil mills in the process of degradation ofresidual waste production. This study also aims to determine the economic value of electricity producedby the biogas power plant. Company`s calculation standard contrasted with IPCC calculation to gaugethe amount of emissions produced from the degradation process of POME and Empty Fruit Bunch(EFB). The average emissions produced in the waste processing sector annually was 9,503 t-CO2/yearand the economic value of electricity generated was IDR 1,866,370/day
