With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, companies had to adapt quickly to survive in the market. During this time, employers played a key role, along with employees involved in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) activities, as they were responsible for implementing the recommendations of the European Commission. There is no unambiguous definition of OHS in Polish legislation. It is assumed that it is a set of rules defining the manner of performing work, and above all, a method of providing employees with working conditions so that their performance is safe and hygienic. Responsibility for the health and safety in the workplace is imposed on the employer by the legislature. Thus, effective health and safety training is an essential element of the success of any properly operating company. In the literature, no studies have been identified that evaluate the effectiveness of actions during the COVID-19 outbreak. The aim of the article is to present the actions of Polish employers along with their effectiveness assessment related to the protection of employees during the COVID-19 outbreak. The article presents a proposal for conducting remote OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) training using the platform Moodle. The created course was implemented during OHS training conducted in a selected manufacturing company. At its end, an evaluation of the course was carried out, and the collected opinions of training participants allowed the formulation of interesting conclusions, which became the contribution of this paper. The authors pay special attention to three main points of the work. The first is the form of training, which gives the possibility to conduct training at a distance while maintaining its effectiveness. The second important point is the mandatory feedback of the trainees, ensuring the possibility of continuous improvement and quality enhancement of both the program and the form of training. The evaluation was developed on the basis of the extended Kirkpatrick model, which is a completely new approach to OHS training evaluation. The third point emphasized by the authors is the possibility of precise adaptation of the training to other plants and even industries. Therefore, it can be concluded that the course developed by the authors is a very interesting and practical didactic tool with great implementation potential.

The safety culture plays an important role in reducing deaths and injuries in many sectors and educational institutions in developing countries. In this study, it was aimed to determine the occupational health and safety (OHS) course, which is taught as a compulsory course in Istanbul Aydın University before taking the course at the beginning of the term and after taking the course at the end of the term, the difference in occupational safety knowledge level and the level of perception of occupational safety culture. A total of 281 questionnaires were deemed valid. For the research, two different surveys were used to measure. Considering the results, there are positive differences in the knowledge level of the students before and after taking the OHS lesson. It has been determined that the safety culture does not change according to demographic information. OHS should be taught to every student in the universities.   Keywords: Occupational health and safety, Occupational safety education, Occupational health and safety lesson, Safety culture

The purpose of this study was to establish the effects of workplace safety and health practices on the employees’ commitment and performance in Steel manufacturing companies in Rwanda. The target population of this study was 533 people, which comprised of Managers, Supervisors and employees. A simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 229 respondents from the target population. The data was collected using questionnaires, interview guide and personal observation. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software, version 21.0, was used to process data while descriptive statistics such as the means, modes, standard deviation, variances and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study indicate that most workers are aware of the dangers of occupational health and safety in the workplace. Also the study found that although employees are aware of the occupational health and safety concerns they neglect to put on the Personal Protective Equipments saying that it is too hot. The study concludes that occupational health and safety significantly affects employee commitment and performance. This study recommends that management should insure the workers and provide them with personal protective equipments to minimize workplace injuries and accident. The study also recommends that management provide regular education and training on occupational health and safety concerns to prevent workplace injuries, hence, promote productivity.

The objective of the study was to address the recommendations from 10 commissioned occupational health and safety (OHS) reports from the mining industry internationally, spanning the past 50 years. The investigation involved a two-step thematic analysis using Leximancer, a text mining software, to identify the key themes and concepts present in the recommendations. First, Leximancer was utilized to analyze the manifest content of each report through conceptual and relational analysis to produce concept maps. The Leximancer mapping subsystem works in two stages, characterized as semantic extraction of dominant themes, followed by relational extraction [1]. Next, a seeded analysis of the term safety culture was conducted to determine how the concept of safety culture overlaps or diverges from the discussion and recommendations present in the documents [2]. It is evident from the initial analysis that although safety culture was discussed briefly in a few of the documents, it was not a consideration in the formation of the recommendations. Therefore, as results indicate, if the recommendations continue to focus on engineering more solutions for past errors, instead of focusing on the organizations safety culture, they will fail to prevent accidents and fatalities of the future. Applying the findings of this research to OHS in mining, and other industries, such as health care, construction and aviation, has the potential to provide a greater contribution to the prevention of occupational accidents and risk reduction.
