This paper proposes a new composite observer capable of estimating the states and unknown (or changing) parameters of a chemical process, using some input-output measurements, the phenomenological based model and other available knowledge about the process. The proposed composite observer contains a classic observer (CO) to estimate the state variables, an observer-based estimator (OBE) to obtain the actual values of the unknown or changing parameters needed to tune the CO, and an asymptotic observer (AO) to estimate the states needed as input to the OBE. The proposed structure was applied to a CSTR model with three state variables. With the proposed structure, the concentration of reactants and other CSTR parameters can be estimated on-line if the reactor and jacket temperatures are known. The procedure for the design of the proposed structure is simple and guarantees observer convergence. In addition, the convergence speed of state and parameter estimation can be adjusted independently.

This paper provides a unified approach for achieving and analyzing global synchronization of a class of master-slave coupled multiscroll chaotic systems under linear state-error feedback control. A general mathematical model for such a class of multiscroll chaotic systems is first established. Based on some special properties of such systems, two less-conservative frequency-domain criteria for the desirable global synchronization are rigorously proven by means of the absolute stability theory. The analysis is then applied to two master-slave coupled modified Chua's circuits, obtaining the corresponding simple and precise algebraic criteria for global synchronization, which are finally verified by numerical simulations.

The robust H2/<em>H</em>∞ control strategy for a class of linear continuous-time uncertain systems with randomly jumping parameters is investigated. The transition of the jumping parameters is decided by a finite-state Markov process. The uncertainties are supposed to be norm-bounded. It is desired to design a linear state feedback control strategies such that the closed-loop system satisfies H performance and minimizes the H2 norm of the system. A sufficient condition is first established on the existence of the robust H2/<em>H</em>∞controller bases on the bounded real lemma. Then the corresponding state-feedback law is given in terms of a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). It is showed that this condition is equivalent to the feasible solutions problem of LMI. Furthermore, the control strategy design problem is converted into a convex optimization problem subject to LMI constraints, which can be easily solved by standard numerical software.
