Purpose: The purpose of this article is to analyze both teaching-research officers (TROs)’ role perceptions and work engagement, figuring out how their competing roles balanced to ensure continued work engagement and which roles are greater benefits to the community and educational reform. Design/Approach/Methods: The study employs questionnaire which is composed of inventory of work role requirements and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, to investigate TROs’ role perception, work engagement, and their relationship. Findings: TROs’ work experience had a complicated relationship with their work engagement. The two strands of the TRO’s role orientation co-existed within their daily work and strengthened each other through exerting effects on the dedication and absorption aspects of work engagement. However, TROs concerned with teacher development displayed higher work engagement than those who put a greater emphasis on policy implementation. Originality/Value: The study contributes to current research in three respects. First, it bridges the macro-level trend of education reform with microlevel role internalization of individuals. Second, it broadens our understanding of work engagement by linking it with the subjective perceptions of one’s work role. Finally, this Chinese case is expected to enrich international perspectives on teacher leaders in the context of top-down districtwide instructional reform.

This article discusses challenges facing novice principals (hereinafter: NPs) and the coping strategies they develop at the inception of their managerial careers. Qualitative research employed semistructured interviews with 40 principals in the Arab education system in Israel. Findings indicated that Arab NPs face conflicting demands of their communities and the state, especially demands of recent government reforms. The sharp transition from teaching to administration is beset by challenges, engendering anxiety. The new role is complex involving immense responsibility, they need to alter their role perception, and struggle to create an organizational culture complying with their vision. Cultural blocks face female NPs since principalship is traditionally an exclusively male role, attributed much respect and power in patriarchal Arab society. All NPs noted that they lacked professional assistance and emotional support. Nevertheless, professional mentors were seen as helpful. Conclusions may inform novice school principals facing similar challenges in traditional and minority societies.

There are many factors that effect maternal gatekeeping, which is defined as the behaviors of mothers that encourage, control or discourage the father-child relationship. In this study, it is aimed to examine the mother characteristics that affect the gatekeeping behaviors of mothers who have children in early childhood. The sample of the study consists of 385 mothers with a mean age of 32.71 (S = 7.61). Participants completed the Maternal Gatekeeping Scale, Parental Self-Efficacy Scale, Gender Roles Attitude Scale, Semantic Differentation Scale-Myself as Mother, Perception Measurement for Father’s Role, Parenting Daily Hassles Scale and demographic information form. According to the results of the hierarchical regression analysis conducted separately for each gatekeeping behavior; mother's perception of paternal role, perception of father's competence and motherhood self-assessment predicted the encouragement dimension positively and discouragement dimension negatively. In addition, it was found that the traditional gender roles of the mother negatively predicted the encouragement, but positively predicted the control. Finally, it was found that daily difficulties experienced by the mother in raising a child positively predicted discouragement and control. It is thought that the results obtained from the study are important in terms of understanding the mother characteristics underlying maternal gatekeeping behaviors and being a guide for intervention programs.
