Abstract The magnetic properties of the d4 Jahn-Teller systems AIMnIIIF4 with layered structures were investigated. Neutron diffraction on powders of KMnF4 and RbMnF4 revealed different antiferro-magnetic spin arrangements below TN = 4.5 K and 2.3 K, respectively: for KMnF4 canted antiparallel along a and b, for RbMnF4 parallel along a and antiparallel along b, in both cases parallel along c, the stacking direction of layers. Mössbauer investigations on 57Fe doped KMnF4 confirmed a spin orientation approximately within the layer plane. A discussion is given of the contributions to the magnetic hyperfine field and the Mössbauer linewidth in quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnets with Ising anisotropy due to thermal excitation of domain wall dynamics (solitons). The experimental data seem to confirm the predicted exponential temperature dependence of the linewidth. From magnetization measurements on powders and a single crystal of KMnF4 the 2-d exchange energy and the out-of-plane and in-plane anisotropies could be extracted. In addition, from susceptibility measurements the exchange energies of NaMnF4 , RbMnF4 and CsMnF4 were calculated. A linear dependence of these exchange energies (positive for ferromagnetic CsMnF4 , negative for the other AMnF4 compounds) on the cos2 of the Mn-F-Mn bridge angle is observed and compared with the behaviour of the AFeF4 compounds which is also linear but with reverse sign of the slope. The specific superexchange mechanisms active in Jahn-Teller systems with antiferrodistortively ordered layers are suggested to be responsible for these findings.

Abstract The manipulation of light emitted by two-dimensional semiconductors grounds forthcoming technologies in the field of on-chip communications. However, these technologies require from the so elusive out-of-plane photon sources to achieve an efficient coupling of radiated light into planar devices. Here we propose a versatile spectroscopic method that enables the identification of the out-of-plane component of dipoles due to the selective coupling of light emitted by in-plane and out-of-plane dipoles to the whispering gallery modes of spherical dielectric microresonators, in close contact to them. We have applied this method to demonstrate the existence of dipoles with an out-of-plane orientation in monolayer WSe2 at room temperature, by means of micro-photoluminescent measurements, numerical simulations based on finite element methods, and ab-initio calculations. Experimental results and ab-initio calculations identify trions as the source responsible for this out-of-plane emission, opening new routes for realizing on-chip integrated systems with applications in information processing and quantum communications.

AbstractI discuss some aspects of a recent frame-dragging test performed by exploiting the Root-Mean-Square (RMS) orbit-overlap differences of the out-of-plane component (N) of the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft’s orbit in the gravitational field of Mars. A linear fit to the complete time series for the entire MGS data set (4 February 1999–14 January 2005) yields a normalized slope 1.03 ± 0.41 (with 95% confidence bounds). Other linear fits to different data sets confirm agreement with general relativity. Huge systematic effects induced by mismodeling the martian gravitational field which have been claimed by some authors are absent in the MGS out-of-plane record. The same level of effect is seen for both the classical non-gravitational and relativistic gravitomagnetic forces on the in-plane MGS orbital components; this is not the case for the out-of-plane components. Moreover, the non-conservative forces experience high-frequency variations which are not important in the present case where secular effects are relevant.

As a purpose of developing micro-actuators driven by liquid crystals, transient behaviors of a nematic liquid crystal between two parallel plates under an electric field have investigated numerically by using the Leslie-Ericksen theory. Twist angle has been selected as computational parameters. Imposition of an electric field on a liquid crystal induces backflow whose profile and magnitude depend strongly on the twist angle of the director. When the twist angle is 0 degree, the induced flow is planar, and with increasing of the twist angle, the flow has an out of plane component, and finally the profile becomes unidirectional when the twist angle reaches 180 degrees.
